  • 2017 Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir Berserker Cuvée

Popped and poured. Just as good as I remember from my first batch, but perhaps a little drier and tarter, in a good way. Very good.

  • 2017 Fiorenzo Nada Barbaresco Manzola

I am pretty sure this is the first bottle of 2017 Barbaresco I have opened. I like this, and I have become a fan of this vineyard for its red fruit tones, vibrancy, and elegance. I don’t recall if it is sandy, but that’s the impression I get. Some menthol notes on the nose. There is a little sappy quality, which I don’t recall ever getting. Now that I think about, I have opened a couple 2017 Roagna Langhe Rosso, which has some Paje in it. This seems a little more concentrated and structured than that wine, from memory. I might try them side by side next time. This is pretty solid, considering the vintage. Drinking fine now, and I imagine for another 10 years or so. I don’t score wines, but the average score here is too low, especially when comparing with the 08 Clerico Ciabot Mentin I just opened.

  • 2008 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin

Popped the cork and poured a couple glasses. A funky, almost sewage note on the nose. A fair amount of brown in the color. All acid and tannin, with very little fruit. Back down the stairs to grab something else. Popped a 2017 Nada Fiorenzo Manzola. After a little time I came back to this and funk was gone, surprisingly, leaving some earthy, aged notes and balsamic. Still, the fruit is fading, almost gone actually, showing older than I would expect at this age. The wine is just unbalanced. All acid and tannin and not a good showing. I can’t image it getting any better, but it really can’t get any worse either. I’ll check back in tomorrow to see.

12/23/2023 5:35:00 AM - Hope all is well. My palate seems to be aligned with yours. I’ve always had a preference for very old wines given they generally have lower alcohol content and now I find myself buying mostly champagne, Bordeaux, burgundy and Barolo and then storing them for long periods of time before drinking them. Thankfully I’ve been doing this for 15 years and buying library releases so I tend to have a steady stream of wines in their prime.

10/12/2020 5:10:00 PM - Jeff, I revisited the 2008 Foreau just now, and I edited my note from last night. Take a look, as I believe it will validate your idea to find and drink your bottle now.

4/17/2016 10:49:00 AM - I don't know the eastern shore well. Corkage is legal in VA, I'm guessing you can find a small place that wouldn't mind
