  • 2009 Thierry Violot-Guillemard Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots

2009 Thierry Violot-Guillemard Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots is savoury and harmonious, entering its prime drinking window. The fully developed Pommard Pinot Noir is clear and medium garnet in colour with a trace of fine sediments. It opens up gradually over six hours of drinking in the evening. Captivating aromas of red plum sauce, macerated red cherry and forest floor are followed by leather, tobacco and dark chocolate.

On the palate, it is dry and medium-bodied, with medium levels of integrated acidity and melting tannin. There are harmonious flavours of red plum, wild strawberry, mushroom and smoky mocha in a long, savoury finish. The 13% alcohol is well-integrated. The empty bottle weighs 592 grams.

  • 2020 Freie Weingärtner Wachau / Domäne Wachau Gemischter Satz Uralt-Reben Smaragd

2020 Domäne Wachau Gemischter Satz Uralt-Reben Smaragd is bright, aromatic and gently spiced. Bottled under brown wax capsule, the youthful Austrian field blend is clear and light gold in colour. Aromas of chamomile, tangerine and green apple are accompanied by riper tones of honeyed white peach.

The mouthfeel is dry and medium-bodied, marked by a high level of vivacious acidity. There are flavours of starfruit, quince, blood orange and white pepper in a medium, lively finish. The alcohol level is 13.0%. The empty bottle weighs 796 grams.

The field blend consists of Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder and other white varieties in minor proportions. The grapes are grown from an ancient vineyard with 80-year-old vines. The must is macerated for about eight hours. The juice is fermented and aged in used 500-litre wooden barrels.

  • 2010 Friedrich Becker Sankt Paul Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs

2010 Weingut Friedrich Becker Sankt Paul is complex, earthy and delicately spiced. The developing Pflaz Spätburgunder is clear and pale ruby with a trace of fine suspensions. With a couple of hours of in-bottle aeration, it opens up expressive aromas of black cherry, dried strawberry and rose petals. Underneath are complexities of tobacco, liquorice, paprika spices and earth.

The mouthfeel is dry and medium-bodied. A rather high level of taut acidity on the attack reveals complex red spices and a medium level of integrated tannin. Vivid flavours of raspberry, hawthorn and truffle lead to stony minerality in a long, delineated finish. The 13.5% alcohol is well-concealed. The empty bottle weighs 842 grams.
