  • NV Faÿ-Berjot Champagne Euphory

From the producer's website (and also clearly from the taste) this is a chardonnay dominant blend, but there is no other information available except Brut and Lot TE17D03 on the label.

On the nose there is citrus and a slight herbal note. On the palate: crisp, clean, simple, straightforward, citrus, perhaps some unripe white stone fruit. The finish is clean, crisp and fairly short.

Overall this is a very simple but well balanced champagne, nice and crisp as an aperitif, but no complexity or interest really on the palate. It might be ideal for prosecco drinkers taking their first steps into champagne. Perhaps a little pricey for what it is at the ~US$35 that I paid.

  • 2022 Vigneti Massa Derthona

I enjoyed the 2016 and 2017 but somehow missed the intervening vintages. I'm not convinced that this vintage is quite at the same level as those vintages yet. (As an aside it's the first vintage that I've had in a screw-top closure.)

One the nose, slightly sweet citrus and some floral notes. The palate follows. But for me what's seriously lacking is some acidity to balance the fruit and florals. It's not flawed as such, but the whole feel is a touch cloying for me. Perhaps this will get better with time, but perhaps not.

I not sure I'll be buying any more of this is the short term at the ~US$23 that I paid.

  • NV Faÿ-Berjot Champagne Brut Rosé

No information on the bottle or the website beyond Brut, Lot TR19D11 (perhaps a 2019 base vintage?). Closed with a Mytik Diam cork. The producer's website implies that they sell grapes to bigger houses (Moet, Thienot, Gardet) and the own label wine is made from what's left over.

Interestingly, despite the fancy cork, the effervesence here is very short-lived, and the wine is at best pétillant within maybe 20 minutes of opening.

The initial impression is of a slightly sweet wine, with very little bite. With maybe 30 minutes of air things improve a bit.

Then there is a little sweet red fruit on the nose, perhaps just a slight herbal overtone. The palate has a little acidic bite and some mineral notes on entry, but these fade fast to a rather thin and still slightly sweet mid-palate. And the finish is short and a little cloying.

Overall, this seems to me like a low-end party fizz. It's inoffensive, but has little to commend it to serious wine drinkers. At the ~US$30 that I paid I guess it's just about OK priced for that.

9/8/2023 12:50:00 AM - Hi Paul, Great tasting notes. HK for 16 years. Do you go to any of the wine events around town?

6/26/2022 9:31:00 AM - saw your message - thanks! When you get back to London you might consider joining Tom Cannavan's UK wine-pages forum. Lots of discussion there (not least on our recent musarathon...) and the offlines section is a good way to meet fellow aficionados and share good and interesting bottles.

8/10/2021 9:45:00 PM - Thanks for pointing out FICO. I'm always on the lookout for distributors that sell 'non-common' for HK wines at a fair price.

9/18/2020 4:56:00 AM - Thanks, I guessed it was xtrawine. The price now is slightly higher. You're right, their promos come & go. I saw your bio & share similar sentiment. Luckily, I don't like Bordeaux/Cab Sauv/Merlot in the first place & there's so much more to explore. Not enough Jura wines in HK (amongst many others). I retired 3 months ago! Happy drinking!

9/18/2020 1:57:00 AM - Hi, it was from https://www.xtrawine.com/hk/ The 2019 was on promo there recently at HK$142.8. When they had the 2018 it was HK$133 (also on promo). I've found that the trick with xtrawine is basically only to order from the 300 or so wines that are in their promos (which change twice per week)

9/18/2020 12:43:00 AM - Paul852, I'm also based in HK. May I ask where did you buy the Cottanera Etna Bianco for around USD17? Thanks!
