  • 2017 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes

This is heart-warming (although drunk cool) complex Sauternes with all the components in the right proportion: fascinating bright golden color, aromas of peaches, apricots, pineapple and a sweet taste with a lot of botrytis, a refreshing acidity and a long finish of more than 30sec. This is a real treat! This wine can still be cellared for many years while gaining complexity, but is already irresistible right now
If you know that the first Sauternes I drank (on my 17th birthday, there was less concern about acohol consumption among youngsters in those days 🙃) was a Château d’Yquem 1949 you will understand my everlasting fascination for these wines. What a pity that they are completely out of fashion nowadays. I sincerely hope that they will not become an extinct species like the dinosaurs, but will rather, like the phoenix, arise from there ashes in the future.

  • 2015 Domaine des Espiers Gigondas Cuvée des Blaches

This is a delicious thoroughbred Gigondas from a lesser known domain owned by the talented Philippe Cartoux, composed of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah and aged in 100% oak. Although light wood aromas are present that even contribute to the complexity, I cannot (Bacchus be praised) detect any vanilla, so I assume that mainly older barrels were used. As this is a mini cuvée (less than 3000 bottles) it will not easy to find it outside France. When you see a bottle and (like me) you like superripe black fruits, boosted by strong ripe tannins and a nice acidity and if you are not afraid of a bit of alcohol 😏,don’t hesitate: grab it, let it rest a few days to allow the sedimemt to settle and drink it in good company: you will be delighted. At 26,00€ (in 2017) this is remarkable QPR. Vinrage 2016 is even better!

  • 2019 Château Fourcas Dupré

A wine from the less known Listrac appellation in the Middle-Médoc. 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 1% Petit verdot, fermented in thermoregulated Stainless Steel tanks, malolactic fermentation and aging in oak barrels (one third new, 12-14 months). A fascinating almost entirely purple color, on the nose and palate cassis, raspberries and licorice, very soft tannines and a refreshing acidity, apparently typical for this vintage. This is a satisfying Bordeaux but not quite at the level of the recently drunk Ch.Paloumey: slightly more superficial and with a shorter finish. However this wine is still very young and could gain more complexity over the next 3-5 years. Anyway at the (promotion) price of 12,00€ this is a real steal (on the webshop of the domain: 23,40€ 🙃)
