I have grown to dislike bedrock wines over the years. They are all either too acidic or out of balance, angular and almost difficult to consume. There seems to be no harmony and balance in their wines. This particular wine, might go well with extremely rich foods (lamb shank?), but by itself it’s a little weird and I have zero enjoyment.
Hmm, possibly a slightly off bottle, or else in a surly place. Decanted for a couple hours, and it still showed less ebullient and darker, with slightly coarser tannins than I’m used to with Dolinsek… if I were blinded, I would have assumed this was a Nervo or other mixed blacks. Still a fine wine, but without that balance and verve that I love about this vineyard.

Strong nose of blackberry and blue fruits with dry, dusty notes blowing through. Powerful palate of black raspberry, violets, black cherry with notes of cola, potpourri, and spice. A bang of alcohol presents itself on the finish, powering the chewy tannins, rustic black and blue fruits, sun-baked earth, roses and cherry syrup before the oak finale. A big, fun-to-drink wine right now.

I’ve been holding off these ‘18s, as they were all right and monolithic upon release. My first go at the Dolinsek and am impressed. Still a bit of a beast upon opening, with a laser beam of zinberry fruit, kirsch, sour cherry, and a layer of fine pulverized, chalky minerals, very Bedrock. Rich, concentrated, but with loads of tension and acidity that prevent this from feeling blocky or heavy. A 4 hour decant kicks this into another gear, with layers of creme de violette, blackcurrant, marine minerals, and black tea. One would think this will continue to improve, possibly for another 10 years - I don’t know enough about these to really predict. 91 at open, 93+ after 4 hours.

Really good drive of sappy zin bramble, citrus, sour cherry and stoney mineral. This showed great length, focus, depth and vibrancy.
