Gillar!

  • I've worked in wine for a number of years now, and the fact that I can only describe this bottle heuristically through its resemblance to more conventional wines will hopefully convey what a perplexing, singular creature this is. Decanted for several hours before drinking. Aromatically this would have had me guessing Chenin Blanc in a heartbeat: waxy, floral, just a hint of mustiness. You could have told me a top cru in Savennieres and I wouldn't have doubted for an instant. But on the palate, instead of fleshy Chenin richness a cascade of acidity sweeps down your tongue and lets you know that you're nowhere near the Central Loire. After that the combination of intense minerality, angular savory cut, and high-toned citrus calls to mind nothing so much as Danube Valley Gruner Veltliner from a cooler vintage, back before the current rash of blockbuster 14% wines. The finish is long, with breeding and purity to make you wince. You may notice that at no point have I even mentioned another variety in the Pinot family for comparison. That's because there's no resemblance here to any of those grapes, at least as I know them. This Pinot Gouges (or Pinot Musigny) is entirely its own thing - literally a freak - Pinot Noir in Henri Gouges's vineyards that lost its pigmentation and in the process became a chameleon and a blind taster's nightmare. And a delicious one at that.

  • Taste at Elysian. Not too impresed.
High acidity showing very light tropical and some lemon zest notes.
Quite light bodied. Just not a whole lot of substance as a whole.
Palate falls short. Not too much going on aromatically either. Dissapointing.
