  • 2007 Joseph Drouhin Santenay - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay
Color was a translucent red with a slightly amber tinge--strange for such a young wine. Nose was a nice mix of blackberry, black cherry, with a dash of funk. On the palate it was a sharply acidic attack with comparatively subdued fruit and relatively little else. Modest tannin and light finish. Easy-drinking and would likely be good with salty foods, but it's not inspiring me. I don't think it has the structure to improve any significant amount as it ages.
  • 2007 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Semi-translucent ruby red in the glass. On the nose I get bright sour cherry with a little bit of anise that is intriguing. On the palate, concentrated sour cherry once again from the attack through the modest finish. Another great example of a wine with great acidity that would do well with many salty foods. Not bad at all, but not great either.
  • 2000 Maison Leroy Savigny-lès-Beaune - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune
Dark crimson in glass, somewhat translucent. On the nose you get a damp basement mustiness with bright raspberry. I worry that the mustiness might have been light TCA so take this TN with the appropriate grain of salt. Silky texture, very pretty on the palate. A little cassis with a little bit of funk. No sharp edges to be found and drinking quite well now. Pleasant finish.
  • 2005 Domaine Michel Gay et Fils Chorey-les-Beaune Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
Dark garnet red and semi-translucent in the glass. Explosive nose of sweet cherry, a little grape-y, quite ripe. On the palate it's got a mouth-filling acidic attack, red fruit through the mid-palate and modest tannin on the finish. This was a hit for several at the table, but I thought it was a little simple. Easy-drinking, but not complex.
  • 2007 Simon Bize Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Translucent ruby red in the glass. Very aromatic with a fruit-forward nose of sour cherries and baking spices. Could smell this for days. On the palate, my notes say "Wow". Very young, very concentrated sour cherry continuing through lengthy finish. Nice structure and I believe this will do well after a few years, and it's not at its prime right now. Very nice wine.
  • 1999 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Opaque red with a modest amber tinge. A little bit of thinning at the rim, but this still looks quite youthful. Beautiful nose leaping from the glass. Deep perfumed cassis with raspberry and baking spices. On the palate it's heavily fruity with big structure. Wow, this is still a baby and tastes like it was just released. For me this was the WOTN, but it needs a few more years to come into better balance.
