 8/22/2010 (Judith's House)

This was a really fun event with a variety of big reds stretching from Italy to Bordeaux, with a stop in Spain, over to Washington, down to California, and then off to Australia. And don't forget those pesky Germans, the event kicked off with a starter Riesling from there. Outstanding Ribs were the main entree prepared by our grillmaster Gary.

  • 2005 Ca' Marcanda (Gaja) Promis Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
This wine opened up beautifully over an hour decant. On opening it was very tight. Aeration into the decanter improved dramtically, but the hour's time worked magic. I am stunned at the transformation of this wine into a gorgeous Super Tuscan. Dark Garnet Red. The fruit on the nose really blossomed from initially subtle to provocative red fruits with earth, just a hint of funk, no barnyard after the decant (actually, didn't notice any anyway). The palate was medium-full bodied with a depth of cherry flavors, cassis, oak and plum. Very well balanced and a lengthy finish. I really enjoyed this wine. 93pts. (93 pts.)
  • 2001 Château Suduiraut - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
This was a spectacular conclusion to an evening of wonderful wine. We drank this with a dessert of fresh peaches and vanilla bean ice cream with a liquor sauce. WOW! What a pairing. The nose on this is floral and aromatic, honey and candied apricots. The sweetness is balanced perfectly by the tart acidity and vibrant fruit on the palate. This is gorgeous. The best Sauternes i have had. 95- 96pts. (95 pts.)

This really was a spectacular night closing with the beautiful Sauternes from Judith. Kudos to all!
