Whites

  • 1988 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Surprisingly fresh and lively. Notes of honey. flowers, spice and cotton candy on the nose. Supple fruit on the palate with vibrant but not edgy acidity. A very good bottle. (92 pts.)
  • 2004 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Very young. Lemon zest, minerals, and racy acidity. Hints of buttered toast and cream. Took some time in the glass to open up. A great wine in the making. Needs time. (93 pts.)
  • 1947 Faiveley Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Earthy nose, sous bois with a hint of brett. A sweet, soft palate with a bit of spice and a touch of VA. (90 pts.)
  • 1949 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Deep purple color at the core. Wet earth and spice on the nose. Good size and weight on the palate, supple fruit with some backbone left. (90 pts.)
  • 1955 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
(Magnum): Super expressive nose, complex aromas. Dark cherry, earth, sous bois. On the palate the fruit was velvety, sweet cherries. Tannins and acidity well integrated. A crowd favorite. (93 pts.)
  • 1955 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
(Magnum) Ripe earthy nose, forest floor, smokey. Medium complexity on the palate, rich with a hint of berry compote (not to be confused with stewed). Nice but overshadowed by the Clos de la Mousse in the same flight. (90 pts.)
  • 1959 Louis Latour Volnay - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay
(Reconditioned). Good color, a pretty floral nose, secondary. Light and sweet on the palate but with a hint of dryness on the finish. One very experienced taster in the group pointed out that the dryness may be a result of the original wine and the younger wine used to recondition may not be fully integrated. A fun and delicious wine for a village. (88 pts.)
  • 1959 Henri Jayer Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Immediately the nose jumped out displaying deep and complex aromas of earth, wet leather, sous bois and spices. The palate was just as complex. A mix of red and dark fruits, herbs with a rich coating sweetness and supple mouth feel. (94 pts.)
  • 1962 Henri Jayer Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Incredible nose of dark sweet and spicy fruit. Medium color with no bricking. On the palate the fruit was intense yet feminine and extremely focused. The complexity on both the nose and palate was mind blowing and ever changing in the glass over the course of an hour. Wine of the night. (96 pts.)
  • 2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
A very sexy nose of mixed red and black fruits with hints of wet earth. Plush, sweet palate of red fruits, elegant tannins backed by just the right amount of fresh acidity. The "terrior" really shines through on this excellent and elegant wine. Fantastic 01' that will only get better over the next few years. Second favorite of the night. (94 pts.)
  • 1993 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Classic Vosne spice on the nose. Deep brooding color. Big on the palate with deep dark fruit and plenty of backbone. Opened up after 30 minutes turning sweeter and sexier on the palate. Good now but will improve. (92 pts.)
  • 1983 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
(Magnum) A bit musty at opening. Mature meaty nose, barnyard, wet fur. Stoney black fruits but somewhat astringent at first on the palate. The acidity mellowed a bit after time in the glass displaying more fruit. (90 pts.)
