2/10/2012 (Peninsula Hotel - Chicago IL)

Another great dinner organized by Knightsbridge with the Wildman producers from Burgundy. I had the good fortune of sitting next to Martin Prieur, with Vincent Avenel from Domaine Faiveley also at my table. Always concerned there might not be enough wine, I brought a few older bottles of Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot from my cellar.

  • 2003 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Lush and ripe aromas of orchard fruit. Apple and pear with a somewhat ripe, slightly candied edge. Powerful and balanced. Fabien Moreau says that quantitatively the wine has very low acidity. He believes the perceived acidity is terroir coming through. (93 pts.)
  • 2010 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Lemon aromas with some faint floral hints. Lemon and lemon zest flavors, good minerality and acidity. Moderate length and finesses, slightly simple. (89 pts.)
  • 2009 Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Valmur - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Stone fruit and citrus aromas. Big and powerful flavors of lemon, lemon peel and ripe pear.Lots of minerality with good acidity give this wine additional power and firmness, particularly on finish. good now, undoubtedly this will improve in another 3-4 years. (92 pts.)
  • 2008 Olivier Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
White summer flowers on nose with apple and pear aromas. Fat fruit flavors of ripe apple and lemon come through powerfully on the palate. Better depth and weight than I've typically come to expect from Maison Leflaive wines. (91 pts.)
  • 2008 Olivier Leflaive Corton-Charlemagne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Ripe apple aromas accompany lemon and lemon oil and floral elements. Very ripe and lush fruit on palate that makes this wine a little top-heavy and less refined than others. There is clearly underlying depth and acidity, so perhaps this wine will get a bit more balanced in another few years. (90 pts.)
  • 2009 Jean-Jacques Vincent Pouilly-Fuissé Château de Fuissé Tête de Cru - France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
Ripe apple and pear aromas with floral notes in background and hints of oak spice. Ripe and rich apple and pear also on palate with moderate weight and length, with only modest acidity and minerality coming through. (86 pts.)
  • 2009 Jean-Jacques Vincent Pouilly-Fuissé Château de Fuissé Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
Big step up from the "Tete de Cru." Lemon and lime aromas with floral and spice. Some apple flavors to start, quickly transitioning to lemon and lemon zest with impressive power and density. Very good length and finish, I was surprised to hear this is made with 100% new oak, which is already perfectly integrated. Worth seeking out. (91 pts.)
  • 2009 Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Simple red berry and cherry aromas with modest spice. Ripe red cherry flavors, although fairly simple. Easy to drink now, best to enjoy in its youth. (86 pts.)
  • 2009 Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Incredibly impressive aromas of ripe black and red cherry with some classically Gevrey game character and hints of new oak spice. Ripe black cherry and blackberry on the palate with lots of power and density, supported with well balanced acidity and tannins. Really impressive for its level. What is even more exciting is that the 2010 Cazetiers also tasted is even better. (93 pts.)
  • 1967 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Martin Prieur thought this had evolved into something somewhat moldy and all mushroomy, some others thought it slightly corked. Either way.... (FLAWED)
  • 1978 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Aromas of red and black cherry, dried herbs and reduced mushrooms. Palate was more earthy with good background cherry still apparent. Lots of dried herb and some spice hints come through on finish, which is surprisingly long, quite weightless and very elegant. (93 pts.)
  • 1998 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Exceptionally floral aromas that showcase sweet red and black cherry and baking spice. Palate was far more muted and oddly off balance, with mostly black cherry and not nearly the level of spice expected from the wine's aromas. Some of us thought there might have been a hint of VA. 95 point nose, 85 point palate. (91 pts.)
  • 2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
An elegantly styled Clos Vougeot, this has a good floral start, along with red and black cherry aromas. Similar fruit profile on the palate with background spice showing some clove, anise, then tarragon, all of which seem to expand on the finish. (92 pts.)
  • 2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Charming black fruit with meaty spice that is surprisingly approachable for a just-released Corton. Fruit on the palate is a bit more backward than the wine's aromas, also showing good power and density. Very "2009" in how accessible this is already, with sneaky power and structure that will enable its longevity. (91 pts.)
  • 2009 Stephane Aviron Juliénas Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Juliénas
Lots of fresh cherry and raspberry aromas and flavors with a slightly floral element. Impressive for its price. (87 pts.)
  • 2009 Stephane Aviron Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
Also incredibly impressive value. More black cherry with some red cherry as well, with meaty flavors and spices. A bit more rustic, giving it good character that's even better now than it was a year ago. (89 pts.)
