  • 2006 Domaine Philippe & Vincent Jaboulet Ermitage Blanc - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
I remembered buying and drinking this bottle last year and really enjoying it. Just as good the second time. Dried pineapple, lemon oil and butterschotch on the nose. Nutty and oily on the palate, with hazelnut mousse and buttered pear. It has a nice oily character to it, but acid maintains balance throughout. It went really well with a rich and creamy seafood salad and a variety of cheeses. There's no rush on opening this wine, as I'm sure it has other things in store for the patient ones. (91 pts.)
  • 2005 Didier Dagueneau Buisson Renard - France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé
Aromas of onion grass, lavender and jalapeno. Tangy on the palate with real concentration, yet still elegant. Lovely chives, almonds and grass on the palate. Long finish with a steely minerality. (90 pts.)
  • 2002 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Viña Gravonia - Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja
Nose of oil, wax, lanolin. The palate shows tangy acid, and almonds, wax and oil. Interesting stuff. (88 pts.)
  • 2009 Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet (Hervé Souhaut) Syrah - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Ardèche
This wine was bright cranberry and plum colored in the glass, with aromas of pepper, cranberry and beef stock. On the palate, this wine showed lots of cranberry and pepper. Medium-bodied with fresh fruit and zesty acid. This is a really good easy-drinking syrah, and it went really well with some charcuterie. (86 pts.)
  • 1997 Atalon Cabernet Sauvignon Mountain Estates - USA, California, Napa Valley
I was excited about this wine's potential, and it paid off. Dark purple colored, with some cloudiness in the glass. The wines smells of cassis, cream and tobacco. Over the course of a few hours it really opened up and showed sweet cherries, fig and rhubarb. The palate shows complex fruit, grainy tannins and enough acid to keep me sipping. Lots of crushed cassis, dried tobacco, dirt on the palate, with hints of green pepper. This wine is still young and will develop some really nice aged characteristics. But, right now, the wine has smoothed out, there's still lots of fruit, but also some aged complexity, making this my style of napa cabernet. I really liked that the oak on this wine was almost undetectable. This has a lot of new world love, but a bit of old world mystique. (92 pts.)
  • 2009 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
This is the second time I've had this wine, and I really love it. It's gotta be one of the best deals in California pinot noir history. Rich cherry, rhubarb, cassis, licorice on the nose. The palate is pure Sonoma Coast love, with tangy cherries, rhubarb pie, plush tannins and balanced acid. I love the freshness of this wine. Absoultely delicious. (93 pts.)
  • 1999 Jean-Luc Colombo Hermitage Le Rouet - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Aromas of Sunday breakfast: smoke, bacon and grease. Medium bodied, the palate tastes a bit thin for my tastes, or maybe a bit tired. There's still some tangy acid, subtle cassis and cranberry fruit. Hint of smoke on the finish. Interesting, but it kept me wanting more. (87 pts.)
  • 2009 Reynvaan Family Vineyards Syrah The Unnamed - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
I tasted the 2008 "The Unnamed" last year and enjoyed it a bit more than this one, although the 2009 is still a great bottle of syrah. Dark chocolate on the noase with black cherry jam. Big, bold, showing lovely currant fruit, plum skins, all supported by fine-grained tannins. Long, plummy finish. Thanks, Brett! (90 pts.)
