  • 2004 Gaston Chiquet Champagne Special Club Brut - France, Champagne
Popped and poured, followed over approximately 2 hours. Light straw colour in the glass. On the nose, notes of lemon peel, slate, fresh cut green apple, and with time, light notes of caramel, florals, white tea leaves, and honey. On the palate, very creamy mousse, gliding across the tongue with tastes of citrus fruits, minerals, burnt sugar, and ginger, leading to a crisp, moderate length finish. I’d expect this to improve over the next several years. (92 pts.)
  • 2000 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Popped and poured, followed over approximately 1 hour. Deep garnet colour in the glass. On the nose, notes of black cherries, brown sugar, dried fruits, undergrowth, blood, crushed rocks and suggestions of cured meat. Unfortunately, this had a slightly oxidative character, despite immaculate storage, that overlaid the nose and palate with notes of lightly bruised fruit. On the palate, the oxidation was more of an issue, as it really lingers on the finish. Structurally, there is still a bit of tannic grip, with a decent vein of acidity. I expect a sound bottle would have been much more pleasurable, as there was a lot to like behind the flaw. (FLAWED)
  • 2002 Chateau Musar - Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
Popped and poured, served blind, followed over approximately 30 minutes. Ruby red colour in the glass. On the nose, sweet red cherries, spice, brettanomyces, very green and herbal. On the palate, sweet red fruit, leather and herbs. Moderate+ acid, with some drying tannin. Moderate finish. Every time I have this wine it is wildly different. I was headed to Italy with my guess (as I have in the past). As with the last couple bottles, this could not reach the previous heights that this wine has hit for me. (88 pts.)
