Notes from our September DRC/Burgundy tasting. The theme (for the other bottles) was Morey St. Denis. The 1985 Clos de Tart and 2004 DRC Echezeaux were poured at the beginning, while the others were poured in flights of two alongside (some blind, others not).

Starter Wine

The Big Boys

These were poured at the beginning so we could savor them and watch the evolution throughout the evening.

  • 2004 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Ruby red color. Gorgeous nose filled with floral and red fruit aromas. Light and fruity on the palate, but oh-so-elegant. Some light tannins on the finish, and initially I got a hint of bitterness. That disappeared with time, as the wine evolved to show some sweeter tannins, along with more gorgeous fruit alongside some umami. Such a young wine, I can only imagine it will improve with age. 94+ (94 pts.)
  • 1985 Mommessin Clos de Tart - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Light, faded edges on a brick colored wine. Initially it smelled woodsy, with smoke, meat, and even a touch of cola. There wasn't much fruit left on the palate, and it finished with light grip. After about 2 hours, it took on the savory flavors of soy sauce. (92 pts.)

The Rest

  • 2005 Lucie & Auguste Lignier Morey St. Denis - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
Tasted blind. Restrained nose, with mint and light cherries. Dark purple in the glass. Full bodied with good fruit, and a medium length finish. Definitely tasted young. (91 pts.)
  • 2009 Joseph Drouhin Santenay - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay
Tasted blind. Candied cherries and bright young fruit on the nose. Similarly light in body, it was a bit muted, though still contained notes of fresh cherry and strawberry. Not much depth to the wine at the moment. (88 pts.)
  • 1995 Hubert Lignier Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Brick colored at the edge leading to a faded red body. Primarily earthy nose with hints of cherry. Gorgeous body (my notes say "wow"), very rich, elegant and round, with good length on the finish. 92+ (92 pts.)
  • 2000 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir Louise - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
Tasted blind. Darker purple color. Much more mushroom, earth and smoke on the nose (perhaps a bit of brett). The body started off a little light, but built up some richness in the mid-palate, and then finished firm. (89 pts.)
  • 1996 Domaine Dujac Morey St. Denis - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
Light red and cloudy in the glass. Smells beautiful, full of red fruit and crushed flowers. Quite rich and ripe on the body, with good structure. The finish was quite elegant and long. Very enjoyable. (93 pts.)
  • 2009 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasted blind. Looks like Robitussin, with a nose of spice, herbs, and some green notes. The body was quite different: big and rich, with juicy fruits and a medium length finish. (91 pts.)
  • 1997 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Cloudy, bright red color with a nice, earthy nose. Tart cherries on palate with a very persistent finish. Such a gorgeous wine with good complexity, but low acids. I think it was definitely fading a bit. (93 pts.)
  • 2009 Domaine Jacques Prieur Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Dark purple color. Minty nose. A bit over-extracted, this wine is big, rich, and juicy with notes of iron and iodine. (91 pts.)
  • 2005 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Dark color in the glass. Big, earthy, nose, with a touch of noticeable heat. Ripe body with hints of bubble gum. Definitely still young. (92 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
Almost pink at the edges, moving towards ruby red in the center. This is a big and youthful wine, especially next to the 1985 alongside it. It seems to be still brooding a bit, and definitely could use some time. (92 pts.)

We also had the pleasure of finishing with the following, though I don't have any notes available to post.
2001 DeLille Chaleur Estate Blanc
2006 Domaine Dujac, Morey St Denis Monts Luisants 1er Cru Blanc
2010 William Fevre, Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons
1989 Chateau Climens
