 1/20/2013-1/22/2013 (Martin's House)

We decided to go for 1986 Bordeaux and taste them twice, once as a pop and pour and once after them having been decanted for 4 hours, we expected this to be more challenging, but given the extreme uniquness of the wines and the latour being flawed, we identified them relatively easily in the blind tasting.

  • 2008 Fattoria La Monacesca Mirum 20 Anni - Italy, Marche, Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva (1/20/2013)
Pear, hop, loads of alcohol, extremely extraordinary, this is a wine, that you don't want to drink another glass, none of us did! While you feel that it has power it is just somehow off (88 pts.)
  • 1983 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/20/2013)
Brown sugar, no petrol, vanilla, peach, cookie dough and a hint of oysters, MAGNIFICENT!! (93 pts.)
  • 1986 Château Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan (1/22/2013)
Tasted immediately after opening and the wine performed beautifully with brown sugar, herbs, autumn leaves, leather and just amazing tobacco, still nice tanin reserve and a very long finish. Scored 95 at that time

We initially hesitated to decant this as we thought that it might fall apart but no, it even gained weight and intensity.

This is why I love bordeaux! I'm a dreamer, so I hope that some of the 2009s will perform like this one day. (96 pts.)
  • 1986 Château Latour Grand Vin - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (1/22/2013)
This wine sucked, big time, smelled metallic and like red beet juice. Aggressive, clearly flawed. This note was more or less constant even after decanting for 4 hours. What a shame (FLAWED)
  • 1986 Château Mouton Rothschild - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (1/22/2013)
Tea leaves, still a lot of black berries and fruit left. dense, suuper dense with massive reserves left. This needs air. At this point it scored 94 and was just behind the Haut.

After 4 hours decanting this baby opened up and WOW!! THis had a creamy texture, nose of chocolate, banana and coconut. What a wine!!! (98 pts.)
  • 1986 Pétrus - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol (1/22/2013)
This seemed odd, despite having been stored perfectly. Very sweet nose, caramel and licorice, raisins, dried figs and tons of vanilla. The girls all liked this best, but I din't fancy it to be honest, as I thought this was just too weird. (84 pts.)
  • 1986 Château d'Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes (1/22/2013)
This was decanted for 5 hours and it was not enough. Still quite closed down, I felt it needed at least a day of decanting. Almond paste, apricot and nice elegance but it was like an iron fist in a velvet glove reluctant to unveil it's full potential. (93 pts.)
  • 2011 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Beerenauslese ❄ ❄ - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/20/2013)
This wine was harvested in January 2012 at -13 degress celcius (That's 8 degrees Fahrenheit) so in that sense it's actually an icewine, but Erbes did not want to go through the pain of classifying it as such and as a result, he designated it a Beerenauslese with two snow stars.

Dried apricot, peach, plums, really really nice acidity that balances out that infamous sweetness. Awesome! (95 pts.)
