4/19/2014 (Prairie Grass - Northbrook IL)

  • 2012 Paul Lato Chardonnay le Souvenir Sierra Madre Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley
Really enjoyable already at this stage, but lots of potential going forward. Floral start is great, with some rich, buttery character with roasted almonds and ripe apple, very Meursault-like. Came across as more ripe, less fresh as it sat in glass and got warmer, but seemed very energetic when 50F or colder. (92 pts.)
  • 1979 Domaine Amiot et Fils Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Muted to start, declined quickly...corked. (FLAWED)
  • 2003 Louis Jadot Bonnes Mares - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
I would ordinarily give this a few hours of air, but today this was popped and poured. I did give it 30 minutes in glass before trying. Lots of ripe black cherry and berries aromas and flavors, background spice, all still very fresh and youthful, giving a slightly one dimensional character. Needs plenty more time.
  • 1993 Colgin Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb - USA, California, Napa Valley
Restrained black berry and plum aromas and flavors that show an enticing combination of freshness and maturity. Lots of dried herb come through nicely on finish. My favorite wine of the afternoon for current consumption. (94 pts.)
  • 1991 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
Popped and poured, this is another wine that really could have used more air. Black cherry, licorice, leather and some roasted game. Started and interesting, but this lengthened and was charming by the end of lunch. The best wine of the lunch in terms of its potential. (94 pts.)
  • 2006 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus-Ex Machina - France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Ultra ripe blackberry, boysenberry and plum with black pepper and licorice. Wine's intensity was borderline over-ripe, but I found this very enjoyable, particularly with the burger at lunch (less so on its own). The most New World style of CDPs. (90 pts.)
  • 2010 Cayuse God Only Knows - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
I understand that there are people who will enjoy this cocktail "wine," but I thought it hardly more than an overripe parody of Chateaneuf du Pape.
  • 1995 Château Gruaud Larose - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Recent library release bottle. Boysenberry and black currant aromas with hint of leather. Same flavors that are starting to be approachable, still showing lots of structure, but starting to provide pleasure. (91 pts.)
