| This was a casual get together with several bottles of Bordeaux from the 1980's. The wines showed quite well, but the Palmer really smoked everything else on the table.
Served with NY Strips and a summer arugula salad. Bordeaux Flight - 1986 Château Mouton-Baronne-Philippe en hommage à Pauline - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Nose: Blackberry, Cherry, Leather, Violet and Lavender notes. The florals were gorgeous on this wine. Palate: Charming and velvety in the mouth with Red Fruit, leather, tobacco and hints of pencil. Finish: Nicely resolved, but not too long. Has the sense of an old library in the finish with some Leather, Flower and Cherry notes.
Curious wine that improved quite a bit with some decanting. Upon opening the wine seemed to be mostly red fruit with a bit of generic "old Bordeaux" character, however the structure and nuance came out with about 2 hours of decanting. These 86's really are hanging in there well even at this level. Over achiever for sure. (93 pts.)
- 1982 Château Léoville Poyferré - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Nose: Dark Cherry, Chocolate, Vanilla and Leather. Quite ripe, but not baked fruit. Palate: Very soft in the mouth and silky. Black Cherry, Red Plum and Ripe Strawberry fruit with good dose of earth and chocolate. Rich. Finish: Lingering red plum and chocolate.

- 1989 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Nose: Blackberry, Plum and Graphite that was shrouded in a saline characteristic. Plate: Nice dark fruit and excellent texture, but it seemed to lack the dynamic personality of other Pichon Lalande I have had.
This had been opened for 24+ hours, and was not showing as well as others have noted. Not flawed, but I cannot rate this example either.
- 1989 Château Palmer - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Nose: Incredible Plum, Cassis, Blackberry and Truffle perfume. Violets make an appearance as well. Absolutely ethereal and complex nose. Perfume like none other. Palate: So seamless as the flavors of Cassis, Plum, Black Cherry, Leather, Tobacco and Florals just slip across the palate. Lithe and slippery, weight without mass and an elevated texture in the mouth. Finish: So incredibly long and powerful.
Margaux at its finest. Thanks to Englishmans Claret for sharing. Clear WOTN head and shoulders above the others. (97 pts.)
