 8/8/2014 (My Place)

I had friends over to grill steak & took the opportunity to work through a horizontal of 07 Napa Cabs I'd been hanging onto. Threw in a higher end comparison point too.

  • N.V. Sonim Cava - Spain, Cava
Good. Bright & lemony, lively acid with light bread tones adding interest without too much weight. (84 pts.)
  • 2007 Cameron Hughes Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 143 - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
Enjoyable if caught at the right point in the evening; note & rating are after a few hours in the decanter. Before that it was either too tight & cedar-heavy, or just disjointed. Probably ranged between 83-88 for me.

When it was in stride....good spicy cedar interwoven with juicy dark red fruit. Fairly full feel with currant peppered in on the palate. Nice finish, still showing strong tannins-I'm willing to bet on more upside here.

My first of 4, will try another next year. (89 pts.)
  • 2007 Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley
Nice. Black fruited, with a touch of earth & some oak tones. Pleasant, not especially complex, but the mid-weight, moderate tannin, good acid give the perception of great balance. (88 pts.)
  • 2007 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley
Open & ready to go. Red fruit, vanilla, black cherries on the nose and palate. Creamy texture, sweet fruit. Full finish, nice for this style & price, in pretty good balance. (88 pts.)
  • 2007 Roots Run Deep Cabernet Sauvignon Educated Guess Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley
Ok nose, with jammy dark fruits, but came across light--almost watered down--on the palate. Good flavors of dark fruit, touch of vanilla bean, and sweet fruit, but those can't account that it's running low kn gas.

An ok drink that's better to have now than very far into the future (82 pts.)
  • 2010 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley - USA, California, Napa Valley
Cool black & blue fruits. Hints of florals, tobacco, vanilla, and charcoal. Smooth, polished, balanced. Walks the line of masculine & feminine very carefully. Long finish. Delicious & layered with years of life ahead.

My first of the 2010s, excited for what's to come. (92 pts.)

Great time with friends & an interesting lineup. I'm glad the Myriad showed above the rest, but am also pleased to have more of the Cameron Hughes & Mondavi.
