 3/7/2020 (Pier 60 - NYC)

What an incredible night. My notes represent about half of what we tasted -- just too many glasses too fast to capture more complete notes. Can't believe I didn't take notes on the Rousseau Chambertin flight! Oh well, next time ;-)

  • 2004 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Corton-Charlemagne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Magnum. Showing mature flavors though texturally this is rich with mineral crispness. Best now. (92 pts.)
  • 2005 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Side by side with 07. Surprisingly, I preferred the 05 for now as it was shower intense yet seamless power. Great smoky orchard fruit and mineral flavors. (95 pts.)
  • 2007 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Side by side with the 05. Likely the better wine in another year or two, but the 05 was a touch more expressive tonight. This is a very rich and powerful wine - just seems to be holding back a touch. Upside from here. (94 pts.)
  • 2004 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
intense smoky orchard fruit nose with a fresh, lively palate. No signs of maturing with upside from here. (93 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Still very youthful with loads of fresh, mineral-filled orchard fruit. Long finish. Upside from here. (92 pts.)
  • 2017 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Wow, so intense and powerful with rich, driving fruit yet ethereal and lifted. Fun now, but clearly needs time to develop nuance. (95 pts.)
  • 2002 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Showing a bit mature with lightly oxidized fruit. Lacking energy and freshness. Ok but you'd hope for so much more. (90 pts.)
  • 2000 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Wow, one of my whites of the night. A dazzling wine with so much intensity and complexity in the aroma and on the palate. Just a lights out, long, intense finish. (98 pts.)
  • 2002 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Something weird going on here with a peanut type aroma. Palate was better but not close to what this should be (particularly following a stunning 2000). (FLAWED)
  • 1978 Maison Leroy Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
I found this to be just okay, while others liked it more. Cider-like flavors with some layering of earth notes. Reasonably fresh for a 42 year old, but more interesting than enjoyable.
  • 1993 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Mature with a full, intense nose of bruised apple and pear. Fairly rich and layered with plenty going on but lacked a degree of freshness vs. some of the other Laguiche Montrachet bottles. (90 pts.)
  • 1989 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
I preferred this to the '93 served side-by-side. This had a touch more nuance and complexity and more body/freshness on the palate. The overall package was both interesting and delicious. (93 pts.)
  • 2013 Etienne Sauzet Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
A great bottle that is firing on all cylinders. So much concentrated rich orchard fruit that is layered and complex. Powerful yet graceful. Delicious right now. (95 pts.)
  • 2000 Domaine Jean Grivot Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Earthy and leathery nose. Palate is more primary with sweet and round fruits that are fresh. Earth, meat and herb add complexity. (93 pts.)
  • 1998 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
The nose is filled with mature ripe orchard fruits. Wow, the palate is so fresh and high energy. In a good place now. (93 pts.)
  • 1980 Domaine Clair-Daü Bonnes Mares - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
The most memorable taste of the night. Crazy aromas that are intense and show layer after layer of mature fruit, earth and spice. The palate is mature yet lively with still chewy structure. Wow. (99 pts.)
  • 1991 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Wow, so sexy and sultry with sweet and ripe black cherry fruit. Loaded with spice. Juicy and ripe at once. So delicious. (94 pts.)
  • 2014 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Wow, this is a stunner with incredibly intense and powerful aromas that lead with reductive white fruit followed by spice. Palate is richly fruited and concentrated with a magical array of flavors. Thrilling from start to finish. (99 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Jero. Forward and full nose of reductive orchard fruit. The palate is rich and luscious. Great interplay of power and brightness. (95 pts.)
  • 1999 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Jero. Similar to an 07 tasted a few minutes prior but with more nuance and layer, but still has the power and freshness. Amazing in this format.
  • 1998 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Similar to the 91 tasted earlier but just a bit more muted and less intense. Incredible on its own but the side-by-side showed its not of the same caliber. (93 pts.)
  • 2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Corton Domaine Prince Florent de Merode - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Wide open for business with a sexy, stem-filled nose of ripe black cherry fruit. Brilliant palate that is packed with fruit and stem flavor. Delicious. (95 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine de L'Arlot Romanée St. Vivant - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Wow, so much Vosne spice in the nose infused with black cherry and tea. Rich, concentrated and silky. So texturally complex. (95 pts.)
  • 1995 Domaine Dujac Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Jero. Terrific intense nose of spice, stem and red berries. Palate is round with sweet, stem-filled fruit. Delicious. (93 pts.)
  • 2001 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Gorgeous, lifted nose has intense stem notes layered into cherry and earth. Youthfully rich and fresh with Grand Cru concentration. Great vintage for Domaine Dujac. (98 pts.)
  • 2007 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Wow, smoking nose or rich decadent fruit laced with exotic spice notes. Palate is loaded with black and red cherry with incredible layering and length. (96 pts.)
