2/25/2008 (Binny's South Loop, chicago IL)

it was my first time checking out the new Binny's in the south loop. Really great store that is just huge and of course I was there for the chance to taste some amazing wines.

Gaia Gaja was the one who gave us all of the background and it was really interesting hearing her talk about the region and the grapes themselves

  • 2004 Gaja Barbaresco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
nose: nice finessed nose with rose petal's, chocolate, deep tones of cherry, with hints of tar and peppermint

taste: nice and finessed with cherry, floral notes, milk chocolate, and bits of tar

overall: beautiful and supple. Very firm on the tannins, but not overbearing at this point with it being so young, it also brings about a very polished finish (92 pts.)
  • 2001 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Rennina - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
nose: nice velvety nose of lilac, red currants, red licorice, soft cherry and cranberry tones, with hints of blueberries and tar

taste: very plush feel on the palate with cherry, red licorice, red currants, and lilac with hints of spices

overall: a very gorgeous wine. Nice and full with wonderful and silky tannins and very long length on the finish. A tremendous wine (94 pts.)
  • 2001 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
nose: huge, dark nose filled with black plum, black currants, red currants, dark cherry, tar, spice notes, and bits of black licorice. This is a "wow" nose that is massively expressive

taste: extremely silky feel on the palate with loads of dark plum, black currant, black licorice, red currants, dark cherry, and juniper spices

overall: an amazing wine, just amazing. Everything about this wine is deep and expressive. Long silky finish with very firm tannins this wine is tremendous right now and can get tons better (97 pts.)
  • 1999 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Costa Russi - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
nose: nice sweet and tart nose with hi-floral tones, provecal herb, and nice sweet spices. Also getting hints of roots, plums, and radishes

taste: very elegant with the tannins being very well resolved. Nice filling feel with provencal herbs, spices, floral tones, and vegetal notes(but good veggies)

overall: beautiful and elegant with perfect light weight on the palate. It just glides across your tounge like velvet with spices being pulled along behind it. It leaves you with a long and silky finish (94 pts.)
  • 1999 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorė San Lorenzo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
nose: real sumptuous nose just filled with tons of different floral notes with most of them being focused tones of rose petals and violet along with getting spice notes of persimmon and juniper and then leaning into notes of red currants, tar, earth, and minerals. Just a gorgeous nose that is extremely interesting

taste: wonderfully silky with anise, rose petals, lilacs, red currants, and persimmon just dancing on your tounge. Just beautiful

overall: beautiful and long, this wine is just pure class with a really nice supple feel (95 pts.)
  • 1999 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorė Tildėn - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
nose: beautiful floral notes just permeate in the glass with anise, herbal tones, cherry, and tar notes to accompany them. Really nice and deep nose

taste: nice and firm feel on the mouth with herbal notes, floral tones, cherries, tar, and anise

overall: filled with elegance and finesse, this is just a tremendous wine that leaves you with an amazingly long finish (94 pts.)

What a great tasting and it was put together so well. While the weather was crummy outside, everything was great inside with all of this tremendous wine. You have to not like world class wine to have not liked this tasting
