 6/2/2021 (Napoli in Bocca, Haberfield)

Here we are again to try a random selection of exciting wines blind

  • 2019 Milton Vineyard Chenin Blanc - New Zealand, North Island, Gisborne
    Served blind.
Fruit sweet, touch of wood glue, honey, apple and citrus. Medium intensity acid is juicy, touch of residual sugar, a little texture on the mid palate, apple, alcohol warmth on the finish. Meh.
I guessed Chenin or field blend, but with age, defo new world.
  • 1999 Didier Dagueneau Pur Sang - France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Pouilly-Fumé
    Served blind.
Briny, savoury, green fruits, grass, a little hay. Medium plus intensity acidity, briny, savoury, alcohol heat, quite peppery finish, fruit a little muted, tannins offer textured on the mid palate. Hmm.
    I guessed old Italian...
  • 2009 Bernard Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
    Served blind.
Farmyard stink, savoury, dark hued fruit, a little whole bunch with a sweet fruit core, plenty of tannic grip, quite chewy, touch of farmyard on the palate as well with that dark hued fruit.
    I guessed Pommard 2010 1er Cru.
  • 2009 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
    Served blind.
Aromas of caramel, oxidised notes, liquorice, touch extracted, leather, earth, smidge of Brett. In the mouth it's tired, old, with alcohol warmth and plenty of tannic grip, lacks fruit. Meh.
I guessed Australian Shiraz mid 90's under cork.
I suspect this was more than a bit forward so I've marked it as flawed. (FLAWED)
  • 2007 Kilikanoon / Cave de Tain l'Hermitage Crozes-Hermitage Alliance - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
    Served blind.
Medium minus intensity aromas of spice, a little red berry; raspberry, sweet spice, young, sweet fruit. Juicy, Medium plus acidity, plenty of textured tannins on the mid palate is drying, red berries, sweet spice, slight alcohol warmth. Hmm.
I guessed 2016 Australian SA Grenache
  • 2007 Andrew Thomas Wines Shiraz Kiss - Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley, Pokolbin
    Served blind.
Red berry, screwcap reductiveness, quite fruit sweet with a savoury earthy underpin and a touch of peppery spice. Plenty of chewy persistent tannins, freshly berried, sweet spiced. Hmm.
I guessed South Australia Shiraz dominant blend from a lousy vintage
  • 2018 Trinity Hill Homage - New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels
    Served blind.
Red fruited, slight herbaceous underpin, biscuit and toast notes, leather, blackcurrant underpin. Medium plus intensity acidity, blackberry, chalky tannins, savoury, peppery...very Kiwi Syrah for me. Alex says like Cornas but without the dirty barrels.
I guessed Kiwi Syrah, possibly Hawkes Bay, 2016
  • 2012 Drew Family Cellars Pinot Noir Balo Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley
    Served blind.
Red berry and cherry, sweet spice, quite fruit lozenge, cedar. Polished oak. Juicy, soft, alcohol warmth, fruit forward, a little talc textured, long, generous. Nice in a slight overdone way.
    I knew this was mine.
  • 2019 Yangarra Estate Grenache Ovitelli Grenache - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
    Served blind.
Savoury, earthy, slightly reductive, red berry. Juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, slight sweet and sour fruit, bold, tight, chalky tannins, alcohol warmth on the finish.
I guessed Australian Grenache, natural, 2018, possibly Victoria
  • 2015 Yangarra Estate Grenache High Sands - Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale
    Served blind.
Reductive, black fruits but quite savoury. Medium plus intensity acidity, chewy plentiful tannins, black fruits, very tight, very young. Time required.
I went for Australian Shiraz, SA 2017
  • 2007 Antonelli San Marco Montefalco Sagrantino - Italy, Umbria, Montefalco, Montefalco Sagrantino
    Served blind.
Meaty, savoury, jubey black fruits, licquorice. Medium plus intensity acidity, meaty, savoury, pronounced grippy, chewy tannins, alcohol warmth.
The acid and tannin made me think of Aglianico but the fruit was all wrong...rather threw me
  • 2004 C J Pask Syrah Gimblett Road - New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay
    Served blind.
Inky, savoury, touch of soy, earthy, leathery, old, dried out black fruit, spice. Juicy acidity, savoury, meaty, leathery, earthy, slightly chalky tannins, fruit sweet core.
    I guessed Shiraz, 1998
  • 2018 Alkina Kin Field Red - Australia, South Australia, Barossa
    Served blind.
Ribena, toast, blackberry, sweet spice, sweetly fruited, biscuit, black hued fruits. Talc textured tannins, slight alcohol warmth. Hmm.
I guessed Syrah or Syrah blend, Australian 2015
  • 2014 Idiom Wines Sangiovese - South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch
    Served blind.
Polished oak and cherry, butter, cream, quite cherry rip on the nose with a touch of coconut here as well. More of the same on the palate with a savoury component, tannins are chalky and grippy, drying through the flavours persist. It's a bit too much good quality oak for the fruit for me.
    I recognised this as mine.
  • 2017 Wendouree Shiraz Pressings - Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
    Served blind.
Medium minus intensity aromas, slightly dusty, savoury, pretty dark hued fruits, plummy, boysenberry, sweet spice. Juicy, fleshy, sweet fruited on the palate backed by chalky tannins, finishes fleshy and fresh. Nice.
Grenache dominant Rhone blend from South Australia, 2015 vintage.
  • 2008 William Downie Pinot Noir Gippsland - Australia, Victoria, Gippsland
    Served blind.
A little stewed tea, vinegar, green herbaceous notes, spice, wet black fruits. Juicy acid tends to sourly unpleasant, tight chalky tannins, red and black fruits are just about present. Pretty awful.
This one completely stumped me, I must confess.
  • 2015 First Ridge Enzo - Australia, New South Wales, Central Ranges, Mudgee
    Served blind.
Reductive, leather, sweet and sour red fruits, biscuit. In the mouth this fruit is more black hued, tight tannins, black tea, tannins are drying, savoury and chewy. slight alcohol warmth. Nah.
Some form of blend, I see a bit of Shiraz but not sure on other components. Probably Australian. Five years old?

Some winners, some losers but lots of learning. Disappointed about not picking the Sagrantino.
