  • 2014 Jean-Louis Dutraive (Domaine de la Grand'Cour) Fleurie Clos de la Grand'Cour Cuvée Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
Pale with orange tinge. Light strawberry and herb aromas. Dry, light, and tart. This seems like typical cool vintage Gamay and is past the point of offering much charm or pleasure. Disappointing in light of its early promise.
  • 2013 Marcel Lapierre Morgon - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
This was the uncultured cuvée (marked "N" on the back label). Similar light, rather anemic color. Some brett marks the nose. A little more body than the 2014 Dutraive, but still overall, light, dirty, short, and dried out. Not very good at all. Consistent with the one other bottle I've tried. This seems like the rare disastrous year for Lapierre although bottles showed more positively early on.
  • 2013 Jean Foillard Fleurie - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
Light red. Dark cherry fruit and funk due to brett. Ripest, deepest wine of the 3 so far with good red fruit and soil. Nice mouth feel, some remaining tannin. This wine has enough to it so it is not slain by the brett, but no question that it detracts from the overall harmony. Too bad.
  • 2013 Jean Foillard Morgon Les Charmes Eponym' - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Light garnet color. Floral tones and, once again, a good dose of brettanomyces. Light red fruit, quite bright due to high acidity, some herbal complexity, and pleasing salinity. Good.
  • 2011 Marcel Lapierre Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Light red center with a fading edge. Clean (hooray!) strawberry fruit. Fluid, elegant feel, and the first wine to show convincing natural sweetness of fruit. Excellent length and acidity with bitter citrus at the end. Far and away the best of the six wines tasted today and a real pleasure to drink at this point.
  • 2010 Coudert Fleurie Clos de la Roilette Griffe du Marquis - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
Deeper red than the 2011 Lapierre. Spicy nose. Darker, more backward red fruit in combination with licorice and substantial tannins. Serious, still youthful wine that is a different animal than any other wine tasted today.
