Openers

  • 1988 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut - France, Champagne
Fully mature, but not tired in the least. Great acid core with wonderful oxidative notes, great body and a long finish. (95 pts.)
  • 1996 Duval-Leroy Champagne Femme de Champagne - France, Champagne
All there, but just lacking some energy. Good drink on its own, 3/3 in the flight. (91 pts.)
  • 2002 Salon Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut - France, Champagne
Wow. Opened and recorked 5 hours ahead of time and it needed every bit. Every time we've had this it was PnP and tight as a drum. Finally I had the time to prep a bottle properly and it showed. Absolutely singing with fruit, acid, body and a long, long finish. This is Salon at its best, built for the long haul. It was still singing for the last sip nearly 10 hours after opening. (97 pts.)

Champagne Flight 1

  • 2000 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut - France, Champagne
Good fruit from the vintage, but this bottle was a bit tired and lacking energy. It was classic Krug richness. (92 pts.)
  • 2000 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne
So young and fresh, it was hard to believe it was 2000. But it's wide open for business and classic lemon with a solid core of acid. This is the one to drink for the next few years while you're waiting for your 2002, 2008, etc. (94 pts.)

Champagne Flight 2

  • 2008 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne
PnP. Right out of the gate it was wide open and brilliant. Aromas bursting out of the glass and all there on the palate. Could have been WOTF. Unfortunately 10 minutes later it shut down hard and was brutally tight and unyielding for the rest of the evening. Needs many years.
  • 2008 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut Rosé - France, Champagne
PnP. Tight, but showing lots of promise with lovely red fruits and great acid.
  • 2013 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne
PnP. Completely wide open and ready to drink. Such a beautiful wine with elegance and structure. Many say this will be better than the 08 in time, who knows, but it certainly is right now. (96 pts.)
  • 2013 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut Rosé - France, Champagne
PnP. Absolutely wonderful. Beautiful strawberry notes with layer and layers of creamy mousse. Second time having this recently and it was easily best Champ on the table both times. So stunning and elegant. (98 pts.)

Chevy Flight 1

  • 1995 Michel Colin-Deléger et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
A bit tired. Not pox, but probably would have been lovely a few years ago.
  • 2008 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Wonderful wine with all the Chevy goods. Fully mature and ready to drink. Against the younger bottles in the flight it seemed a bit over, but I think on its own it was elegant and beautiful with lots of richness and a nice finish. (95 pts.)
  • 2010 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Bright and fresh, this was open for business with the mature notes combined with the bright, freshness that you want. (96 pts.)
  • 2014 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Bright and fresh, this was simply stunning and has all the goods. Layers of white fruits and great body with a beautiful finish. (98 pts.)

Chevy Flight 2

  • 2013 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Open and enjoyable, but not among the best of the night. (93 pts.)
  • 2015 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. More of everything compared to the 13, lots of rich fruit, but lacking definition. (94 pts.)
  • 2017 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Double decant 1.5 hours in advance. Such a wonderful wine, this has all the pieces together. Great fruit, structure and acidity. Still such a baby. WOTF, but I still preferred the Leflaives as a whole. (95 pts.)

Intermezzo

  • 1988 Château d'Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Supremely dense and delicious and a wonderful intermezzo. (97 pts.)

Dessert

  • 1990 Château d'Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Very good with layers of candied fruits and good acidity. (95 pts.)
