White Burgundy

Other than hearing about Hubert Lamy from before, the rest was like a blind tasting to me. Another awesome experience.

  • 2020 Olivier Merlin Saint Véran Côte Rotie - France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Saint Véran
Aromas of light, fresh and juicy peaches without the heaviness from being ripe, mixed with whole uncut pineapples, and the scent of an open field of grass and straw.

Light, bright and fresh white stone fruit flavors with a nice citrus zest, with an oiliness on the palate but somehow manages to stay light. Nice bitterness from dark minerals.

This was exciting with tons of verve and energy. What a gem for what you pay for. (92 pts.)
  • 2020 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin La Princée Blanc - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin
Blended and round aromas of ripe yellow pears and yellow fleshed stone fruits, and white flowers with its dark brown stemmy scent quite pronounced.

The roundness from the nose matches on the palate with similar fruits but has the addition of a gentle but firm spice. Flavors here seem a bit watered down (hard to describe). (91 pts.)
  • 2019 Marc Colin et Fils Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sous Roche Dumay Blanc - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Dark mulch with a damp greenness to it, blows off with some time but still has a slight remnant of it. Aromas of ripe yellow stone fruits with a nice prickliness. There's a touch of green here but in a good way.

Flavors of pear with a nice prickliness, bitter stems, and gentle minerality that has a nice spiced character to it. The pear flavors are overgrown without the proper amount of ripeness to keep up with its size (imagine a giant pear but without enough juice, almost watered down or dried). (90 pts.)
  • 2020 Domaine Marc Morey & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
Beautiful and pretty floral aromatics with some gooseberries, if they somehow smelled sweet and ripe aside from their usual scents. Cut, crisp white peaches (the hard, crunchy fleshed ones).

On the palate is a very subtle creaminess, I wanna say vanilla but it’s not, while having no heaviness from it. Clean white fruits with intense flavors but with almost dried flesh (in a good way).

So airy with an awesome flavor profile, so blissful and heavenly. Another gem for what you pay for. (93 pts.)
  • 2020 Domaine Capitain-Gagnerot Corton-Charlemagne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Fresh but intense white stone fruit, perfumed white flowers with subtle hints of straw, and notes of dried stones as if you’re standing far away from them in an open field. Fresh and prickly on the nose.

Fruits are elegant and light on the palate: deep yellow stone fruits with its bitter pits, minerals, awesome spice (very encompassing without being detracting).

My favorite of the lineup. (95 pts.)
  • 2018 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Domaine - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Aromas of ripe but awesomely balanced fruit flavors and a nice spiced note, it’s strong spice but very well balanced, and wet river pebbles. Nice richness but somehow manages to stay light and swift.

Drier fruit profile on the palate but leans more toward the minerals and prickly bitterness, and subtle dried stems. Dried, sun basked earth and dried crushed stones.

This was a bit disappointing for the price tag. Even with some time, this didn't improve much. (92 pts.)
