  • 2018 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
Flex: had to open this to cook with, because I ran out of cooking wine at home. Anyway, it's fine. Definitely shows that ripe-fruited barbera character, with a nice mix of red and black fruit. There's a bit of that high-toned barbera character as well. Slightly muted on the palate which was a bit disappointing given the intensity of the nose. (88 pts.)
  • 2006 Domaine Dujac Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Served single blind next to Rousseau, and on the pop and pour it was pretty hard to tell the difference. With air though it's pretty clear. This is a lighter wine; less ripe and intense, but with much brighter aromatics and lift. There's a strong hint of the classic 2006 earthiness (slight beetroot quality) in both of these wines. The vintage character definitely shows. (93 pts.)
  • 2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Single blind with Dujac. Clearly no stems here, so the identification, with an hour or two of air is pretty easy. Far more opulent and rich than the Dujac, with burlier fruit and tannins. Much larger scaled, with that distinctive 2006 earthy note. I preferred the lither and more elegant Dujac to this, but I do enjoy the intensity of this. (93 pts.)
  • 2017 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Fantastic bottle of Dauvissat -- such a frustratingly inconsistent producer with bottles showing weird so often. But this bottle -- wow. Quintessence of Chablis. Salty, minerally, lemon zest. That's it. That's the note. (95 pts.)
  • 2021 Floodland Brewing Filaree - USA, Washington
They wanted to highlight the plum. Nailed it. So clean, you get that texture of biting into a juicy, but firm plum. Absolutely delicious stuff; I just wish it were easier to get this here. One of the most compelling beers I've had in a while...
