 1/19/2024 (Toms Naples FL condo)

  • 2008 Diebolt-Vallois Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Millésimé - France, Champagne
The nose is like diving into a bowl of dough. Beautiful fresh bread dough on the nose. The palate is spicy, has pear and then a tin like slightly bitter finish. The palate is less compelling than the amazing nose. Nose 94, palate 90. (91 pts.)
  • 2015 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Pop and pour, drank about 1/3rd of the bottle over a few hours. Stunning, bone dry, dank minerality, light fruit. Just gorgeous and may have been the best wine I had on this trip to Naples FL. (94 pts.)
  • 2004 Château Pontet-Canet - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Slow od 5 hours at 73F in Naples FL so I suspect it was served too warm (not my choice, don't bitch to me that I screwed it up). The palate is a bit hot and the tannins are still there, not fully relaxed. Nonetheless this smells and mostly tastes like a fully resolved Bordeaux, I suspect just a bit too warm. Beef blood and Bordeaux funk are enticing. I decided not to score this because I think it was too warm, but I was around 93 for this.
  • 2015 Padis Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, California, Napa Valley
This is a well-structured Napa cab with fine tannins, leather and red fruit. This isn't exactly a traditional style, but it also isn't in-your-face modern. A bit of olive and violets, really good for the discounted price. (93 pts.)
  • 2005 Karl Lawrence Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Pop and pour due to traveling, served slightly chilled and let it warm up quickly in Naples FL, drank about 1/3rd of the bottle over 2 hours. This was very compelling compared to when I had it in 2018. Yes, plenty of fruit here, and I also tasted a nice rocky minerality amongst the red to black fruit. Not a ton of additional complexity but great balance and drinking very well. This just hit 94 to me. (94 pts.)
