Enjoying some good bdx in the mountains with a couple of mini-verticals.

First up, Latour.

  • 1989 Château Latour Grand Vin - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
A trio of Latour - 89, 82, and 52. Started with the 89. I don't recall having this wine before (but must have somewhere), and it was as typically reviewed. A decent drink but a fairly uninspiring bottle of wine. A bit tired already (1989!) and doesn't look like this wine will go anywhere better.
  • 1982 Château Latour Grand Vin - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Followed the 89 with the 82. The nose sang out - and really screamed look at me. On the palate, a very good to great wine. Mmmm.
  • 1952 Château Latour Grand Vin - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Followed the 89 and 82 with a 52. I loved it, and it was classic old bordeaux. Smooth, no rough edges, lovely fruit, just a sexy bottle. Bravo.

Next up, Haut Brion.

  • 1990 Château Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
A quartet of Haut Brion. 90, 82, 70, and 61. Started with the 90 and a very good place to start. For me, this wine never fails to impress. It screams class, and its fruit profile is stunning. Really good juice.
  • 1982 Château Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Followed the 90 with the 82. An atypical first growth where the 82 is vastly overshadowed by the 90 (yes, not everyone would agree with that). Although its less of an attention grabber, the 82 is a lovely wine. Soft, sexy, and appealing in a very low key way.
  • 1970 Château Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Followed the 90 and 82 with the 70. I don't have a lot of experience with this wine, but my first thought was "is it real"? So young, with strong forward fruit. Very much the HB profile, and from an impeccable celler, so likely the real deal. This brought out oohs and aahs from the crowd. Maybe the best bottle of any 1970 bdx except Petrus that I've experienced.
  • 1961 Château Haut-Brion - France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Last up, the 61. Simply a stunning bottle of wine. Perfect condition, and just a jaw dropper. The fruit on good old bottles of HB is in a world of its own. A great way to end the night.

Although not matched up precisely, I'd say the HB was the most enjoyable of the two verticals. But both were fun, and with the Alps as a backdrop, and an almost full moon, life doesn't get much better.
