8/1/2009 (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL))

  • 2004 Svishtov Cabernet Sauvignon Gorchivka - Bulgaria, Gorchivka
    Light ruby color.
Funky feet and baby powder aromas on the nose.
    Super light and spicy palate.
    Strawberries and light cherry.
High acidity, moderate low tannins and moderate alcohol. (87 pts.)
  • 1995 Château Le Gay Pomerol - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Lighter ruby color - signs of brick red.
Funky light bodied mocha aromas. Smokey cinnamon and clove with some sour milk on the back end.
Some slightly reductive notes of smoked meat.
    Round palate with nice acidity.
Doesn't come through as opulent and creamy as the nose would suggest.
Nice drying tannins with a moderate long finish. (92 pts.)
  • 1985 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Extraordinary wine. Light ruby. Brick red with some light brown at the rim.
Lovely rose petals, ripe cherries, flowers and complex potpourri.
The palate is rich and creamy - long and pure.
Tobacco leaf on the nose as well as spicy cherry pie.
The palate is elegant and layered. Beautifully aged bottle.
Time to drink up but truly awesome. (95 pts.)
  • 1994 Château Lynch-Bages - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
As a whole the wine was kinda off. Showing ocean breeze -- dirty ocean though...like Atlantic City Beach oceanfront.
Red and green pepper also on the nose but not fresh...more stewed.
Close palate. Granola bars and some pantry action going on. Will this come around? Dumb phase.
Kinda water-like on the palate...still enjoyable by my standards though. (90 pts.)
  • 2001 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select - USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
Massive extremely well endowed wine. A notch below the '02 in terms of depth and mostly balance, but absolutely stunning nonetheless.
Decanted 5 hours. Cloudy dark ruby in color, though not opaque.
Masculine aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, mocha, leather and tobacco. Black eucalyptus flowers, lots of smokey meat as well.
Enormous and massive in length. The palate is a little thick and showing so much balance for a wine with nearly 15% aocohol.
90 second finish. Many thought this was Syrah due to its meaty smokey character.
Who wouldn't love this wine...even the big Old World Burgundy fans enjoyed this bottling. (97 pts.)
  • 2004 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
    Dull ruby red color.
Nice earthy funk. Barnyard, shrooms, robust cigars and rusty iron.
Mullberries with nice spice on the palate.
Nice structure overall with a unique blood orange play on the finish. (91 pts.)
  • 2007 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Gorgeous perfume of purple flowers and ripe red fruit.
Spicy earth driven with some lovely round strawberry cream.
Palate is medium full bodied with an excellent shroom play on the back end.
Needs some time to open up. A firm firm structured baby of a wine.
Nice ripe spicy extracted Chambertin. Very very nice. (93 pts.)
  • 1983 Labouré-Roi Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
    Light brown color...almost a tan/orange/pink hue.
Nose of marmalade and orange rind.
Palate shows lots of life. A little viscous with a glycerol component on the finish.
Roasted nuts with surprising acidity on the back end.
Doesn't look like it will be enjoyable by the color...but boy oh boy...this was a treat. (92 pts.)
  • 1983 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Extra pungent notes of forest floor and wet dog. Nice shrooms and Indian spice as well.
    Rich well extracted palate.
Excellent length on the tongue with extremely Old World dirtyness.
    Really really enjoyed this bottling.
Old car tire on the nose as well. Tires that have had many years on an old dirt road. (92 pts.)
  • 2007 A. Rafanelli Zinfandel - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
Hugely extracted royal aromas of waxy crayola crayons, dark brown gravy, cassis and dark cherry pie.
    Fantastic finesse on the palate.
Old World in style believe it or not. Lots of earth...especially for a Zinfandel.
    Great round mouth feel.
Not overdone at all with impeccable balance.
    Absolutely lovely. (93 pts.)
  • 2004 Araujo Estate Syrah Eisele Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley
Deep cloudy ruby color. Lots of glycerin and smoked meat. Spicy blackberries.
Gorgeous length. Very rich but with balance and finesse. A lot of bacon fat comes into play as the wine opens up over the hour.
Extracted and huge. Very tasty and again, my kind of juice.
Everyone enjoyed this bottle...and we had it a few months earlier...what an experience in California Syrah.. (95 pts.)
