2003 Brogan Cellars Pinot Noir Lone Redwood Ranch (USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley) 9/10/2005elpasset94

Dinner at Coup des Tartes with Hurvitz and Cohen. Wow, this was a big, big Pinot. I know from visiting with Margie that she makes her wine to age, but I couldn't resist opening a bottle to see how it was. While it was excellent now, some age will only make it better. (2120 views)

Very young, but also very enjoyable. Lots of perfume on the nose, but not followed up at the same level on the palette. Should age nicely, lots of potential. Will revisit in 3 years. (1962 views)

My thought had been to wait a while longer on this one, as I have really enjoyed the '99 a few times over the last year; however, the recent mailer suggest to drink these up as the fruit was fading faster than expected. Boy, was this comment spot on. Seriously thinning out with no secondary characteristics developing. Lightweight, simple Russian River dark cherry cola fruit. Okay, but due to performances like this and the current pricing, this is no longer on my buy list. (1986 views)

Interesting to see what age does to some of these wines. So much of the California pinot is made to drink young that you seldom get a chance to see how they age. Very interesting in a mature "Mrs. Robinson" sort of way...didn't need to be flashy and in your face and took her time. (1589 views)

14.3% alcohol. light ruby color, which is kind of refreshing when it seems like every pinot is as dark as a zinfandel. medium body, very red fruit, no harsh tannin, and a nice finish that just slowly disapates over several seconds. this isn't a world beater, but the sum is greater than it's component parts, it's been a pleasant sipper, and i find no fading of fruit. in fact, i will say that margi's wines improve with modest time in the cellar. A dramatically improved showing from the last bottle. Round and velvety with sweet dark cherry fruit. Fans of this style will probably really like this. (1352 views)

Another good showing. Velvety smooth with sweet red cherry fruit. I am not a huge fan of the style, but those who are would probably rate this even higher. (1334 views)

long time fans of the program are aware of my love/hate relationship with pinot noir. i have repeatedly used skewis as my baseline, and i am perpetually on the hunt for the rewarding examples of the variatel.

i had the 01 version of this wine about 2 weeks ago, and found it a bit tart and less than delicious.

this is a russian river valley wine. 13.4% alcohol. margie wierenga, the daughter of burt williams, is the winemaker. i've been on the mailing list for 4 years.

immediately upon pouring, i was surprised at the slightly brownish rim in the color. otherwise nice garnet. i am not a fan of an earthy bouquet in pinot. to me, this is all too frequently a sign of an over the top syrah style i don't enjoy. the nose on this wine was delightful. full of black fruits. the first sip grabbed me right out of the bottle. silky and well balanced, this is quite a nice wine. the best brogan pinot i have ever had (margie has said her 2000 olivet lane is top dog, but i haven't opened any yet). notes of asian spice and black cherry (my favorite flavor). full bodied, rich and satisfying mid palate, good finish. well, i guess you could say i like it.

14.3% alcohol. significant brown/bricking out on the rim. very smoky and earthy on the nose. fruit that is muffled and not even close to the showing of 15 months ago. long gone; my last bottle. (1874 views)

I found this pinot to be both aged and elegant. The fruit has taken on an earthy quality indicating the second half of its life. Some forest, briar, and burnt cola notes are evident, which I like very much, and the finish has quite a bit of smoothened acidity, which may come to the fore as the fruit recedes. Tannins are fine and soft. If I owned more than this lone bottle, I would drink sooner rather than later. Chris asked for more (a rarity) 89-90 (1613 views)
