This was available by Coravin pour at Bar Rioja in London. The nose is pungent and classic Rioja, filling the glass with layered tones of oak, dill, sour red cherries, raspberries, leather, licorice, dried roses, and some earth notes. The Medium/full bodied feel is refined and silky with tart, medium+ acidity and resolving, medium+ tannins. This is just lovely and hyper classic. It is fully in its pomp and is a real joy to drink now while still having plenty in the tank for many more years of aging. (381 views)

I loved this cooler vintage Rioja -- it weaves in all of the classic Rioja elements (dark cherry fruit, cigar box, a bit of leaf/forest floor and oak spice) but in a more middleweight style with a lot of verve. I have some bottles from more esteemed vintages but on this performance I'm certainly willing to relish the supposed "off" vintages (2089 views)

Monstrous on the nose - generous, sweet, fruity, rich, leathery, creamy. On the mouth - declining - soft and slightly melancholic. Complex - sweet spice, also salty and strange, but enduring length and overall and impressive seriousness. Sensationally subtle, silky, ethereal, exquisite wine. Sweet vanilla and strawberry aromas but not a hint of excess on the sweetness. Incredibly fine tannins, deliciously delicate and gentle on the palate, gorgeously generous finish of figs and cinnamon and forest fruits, with possibly just a hint of tobacco. Such a beautiful wine. Just very possibly on its final descent here, at 17 years. Better vintages, such as the 2001, will develop for much longer, but well-cellared, I would still give the 2000 a few more years. Made the mistake of not reading my prior notes and only decanted for 30 minutes. The acidity is just way too prominent without airtime - very disjointed and not giving much drinking pleasure. This was our last bottle and I am kicking myself for not preparing this bottle appropriately. (2757 views)

Nice nose, showing age in the color; hints of brick. Served with lasagna. Good Rioja nose and flavors. Medium body, still has some fruit and has evolved into a wine I thought was older than it is - dusty, leathery flavors/textures. Nicely rounded out tannins. Nice finish. Just what I was looking for. Rim well bricked, plenty of wet autumn leaves on the nose, leather, black tea ripe prunes and cedar, certainly an intriguing nose that leads you back in time and time again. The palate carries on with the tertiary notes, more leather and autumn leaves combined with ripe red berries, medium + acidity and a fine coating of powdery tannins ensure this wine can hold for longer although there is little fruit left for it to gain in complexity, drinking really well now. As a previous taster noted, this really needs some airtime to open up. Initial tasting on pop and pour hits you with some big oaky tannins and then a lot of acidity - a bit disjointed. But give this an hour in the decanter or glass and it really comes together very nicely. I think the CT drinking window should be expanded to at least 2020 - because this still seems to have quite a bit of fruit on it and some big tannins/acid that should still hold it for longer than a year. Dark opaque core with a lighter rim. Classic Rioja laden with American oak & dark fruit. Didn't give this enough air time as the oak really needs time to subside. Well balanced with spice, fruit & plenty of structure. Full bodied, tannic & unbelievably fresh. Tobacco, black tea & dill accent the dark cherry notes.

The elements on this are fluid. This shows good density, and while the oak is still out in front, it never becomes fixed as the other parts of the wine are in flux. Excellent. (3028 views)

Terroir-istes International - Spain, Rioja (Rodwell House): Mid garnet to light orange rim, quite open-knit nose with notes of vanilla, chocolate truffle and treacle. Feels a little dry (damp oak) on entry, especially the drying finish, yet has a pleasant sweet fruit that assuages the palate giving coffee-toffee notes, caramel, molasses, and the fruit does eventually appear. Short to medium finish but the wine improved in the decanter. Perhaps showing a little awkward at the moment. Youthful. (510 views)
