Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) (Palm Beach Gardens FL): Bottle was in great condition, even if label was mostly tattered. Still quite alive with good earthy, mushroomy character on both nose and palate. Expectations were high given how much the auction house built up this wine at an auction a year or two ago. Older Burgundies and Dinner with friends (Our house): Really old and one could say its past its glory days, but for 1955 it still drank well, color was muted and not as clear as the other wines of the evening, the nose pure burgandy, the fruit was good but a little off. Kept in perfect provenance for many years in the Berns cellar. Dark ruby color with bricking edges and a nose of wild mushrooms upon opening, leading to tar and roses after 10 minutes in the glass. The fruit evolved nicely, tannins are transparent, and the acids plentiful to give a great mouthfeel. Although this wine definately shows as a mature wine it's far from gone- it's in a great place now and should remain there for a long time. It's amazing what great burgundy can do. | ||||

Sweet, smoky and fresh nose. The attack was light in weight but with great intensity and lovely tea leaves notes. Despite being decanted, it still took about 45 minutes to open and be fully expressive. Classy wine, super fresh and deeply leathery, this bottle does not have notable sois bois or volatile acidity. The 1970 Gouges Pruliers is still a beauty in its rugged way - soft red cherries and a forest floor bouquet capturing chanterelle, pine, and earth. This is really quite full bodied and still shows grippy tannin but there’s enough acid to match and, while the dried cherry on the palate suggests a wine slightly past its apogee, this is still overtly delicious.
