Serially sampled over three hours from a pristinely cellared bottle that was decanted off of its sediment, this Cabernet remains deep-to-opaque red/garnet in color and serves up an intense package of black currants, dark bramble fruits, graphite, violets, tobacco and vanilla. Full-bodied, fresh and without alcoholic heat (14.2%), the oak has now fully integrated, as have the tannins. Round, dense, delicious on the mid-palate and lengthy back end, it has fleshed out beautifully. This is a Cabernet that has dramatically defied the pundits' longevity predictions and has even defied my own previous predictions. Comparably cellared bottles still have enough fruit and structure to reach their twenty-fifth birthday with grace. Decantation off of the sediment is necessary at this point, but it will fully strut its stuff within an hour thereafter. Drink now-2026. (1114 views)

Very expressive nose on opening. Dark garnet color does not show much age. A fairly simple wine that lacks distinctive tertiary flavors, but showing nice plum and cherry fruit on the palate. Would not have guessed this is a 19 year old wine. Bought on auction for a reasonable price and probably did better than I expected. (1565 views)

30 minute decant for this 2001 purchased on auction. Fair amount of crystallized sediment near the neck of the bottle indicates proper long term storage. Deep opaque garnet. Surprisingly big nose of blackberries, cedar and creme brûlée. Flavors are similar with a little dry rock, ash and cocoa. Medium to low tannins and medium plus acidity. Still has good life in it. My 2nd and last bottle.....my 1st review still stands but it's even better with air now. Classic Cali cab nose, even after 16 years. The initial very slight raisining upon opening disappears with an hour of air. Black currants dominate, the mouthfeel is plush moderate to max weight with enough tannin to make you dream of Napa all night long. Parker says 2017 is it which is why I drank this tonight.....on opening with the early raisining I would have said he was right, but with air, this stuff can go another few years easy. Still a powerful back end with plenty of fruit. If you have any left, you are very lucky......this was the wine that turned me on to Whitehall Lane to begin with. (4748 views)

An excellent wine but a far cry from the superb 2001 Reserve. A bit sharp upon opening, but mellows nicely after an hour or so of air. Fruit forward yet bright and mostly pleasing bottle of wine. The wine is rich and powerful with a large oak influence. The oak was pleasant but verged on over the top to my liking. The color was inky purple. The wine was dense and full bodied, nothing subtle here. Boysenberry jam, ripe black plum and smoked meat dominated the flavor profile along with vanilla from the oak. For me this overpowers most foods and begs for something spicy and mouth coating to eat with it. (1869 views)

2001 is proving to be a very fine vintage. See, jerwin1943 and others for their takes on this wine. It has shown very well and gave much satisfaction. Everything is well integrated leading to a nice finish. Black & red fruits big in the mid palate. At peak, so enjoy and/or share the good news w/friends and family. After 1 hr. there's a nice note of Dickensen Black Raspberry jam, along with it's spicy characteristics, both in the nose and the mid palate. (2300 views)

I bought a few of these on release and most were consumed prior to joining CT in 2009 so I don't have a tasting history on it. With 2 bottles remaining, I decided to pop it mid week to see if it had anything left.
I was not expecting the treasure that greeted me. I decanted it for 30 minutes before serving and from the get-go it was stunning. My tasting impressions closely match the well done note of La Cave D'Argent on 5/11/2012 so I will dispense with the replay.
I plan to hold on to my last bottle of this until 2015 for a retrospective with my 7 other 2001 Cabs. (3122 views)

This wine retains a youthful appearance, with a deep-to-opaque ruby/red robe. It was Vinturi-decanted off its sediment and serially tasted over the ensuing two hours. The nose is immediately expressive of ripe black fruits, minerals, violets and a touch of eucalyptus. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity, generous residual (ripe) tannins, well-integrated alcohol (listed as 14.2%) and luscious black fruit-dominated flavors. The middle palate is solid and the finish is long and smooth. While very nice at this point, there is no doubt in my mind that those who hold well-cellared bottles of this wine will be rewarded for their patience. Gorgeous clear ruby red color, no bricking at all. Beautiful nose, still fruity, cassis, red currants and hints of american oak which has been tamed. On the palate, great balance, fruits and tannin interwoven with delightfull vanilla presence. Feels younger than 10 years and it is just starting to develop mature notes of leather and tobacco. Smooth as silk! Initially, sulfur on the nose when decanted, which went away within a few minutes. Wish we would have opened it up a couple years ago; it's missing that something. This is an aged wine right here - aged wines have different nuances and difference sublties. I think I prefered it when we first opened it back in '03. There are definite sublties here; I'm just missing that fruit. What a contrast from when we drank it young and now; but it's still good. The fruit is there, no big fruit, no tannins. Glad we opened it now, it would have nothing in a few years. Smooth as silk, that's what this is. That's what I felt about the reserve, too. It's not the Whitehall that we're used to, but the bottom line is it's still good. (4212 views)

Wow this is much better this time around. Dark red core, vibrant red at the edges, no bricking what-so-ever!

Nose: Cherries, cassis, some chocolate and menthol notes, oak, and spice.

Palate: Full but not overbearing, maybe a tab more oak than I like these days but it suits the opulent fruit and big tannins well. The tannins here are pronounced and focused, lengthening the finish texturally. Some acidity joins the finish along with the cherry and cassis fruit. (4090 views)

Perhaps the best bottle of this I've had. Secondary notes, notably sweaty cedar developing on the nose. This secondary character also carries to the palate, with dark fruit, cassis and sense of mint being the highlights. Full bodied without being overpowering. The harshness present on the finish several years ago is largely gone. If a few remaining rough edges round out before the fruit starts to fade, this could be better in a year or two and in fact could last much longer. (5531 views)

A year ago, I thought this wine was "tired". Four months ago, I thought it might be getting its second wind. This time around, it showed better than it ever has. Although my judgment obviously cannot be trusted, it appears to me that it's at (or approaching) its peak. Cassis, vanilla, and mostly plums. Solid Napa cab on the palate, with a long, fruity finish. Nose & Palate: Black berry and cherry aromas, some sweet oak and spice. The fruit is there but delicate. Paired poorly with a maple & honey crusted ham as the sweetness from the pork knocked out the fruit from the Cabernet, leaving bare the tannin and acidity. Choose wisely a good food match. Opened for 1 hour and decanted for another hour. Dark ruby, with some bricking. Vegetal, brussel sprout nose to start. With time, nose develops notes of pepper, cherry and a hint of pickle juice. Palate is more red fruit driven, with red currant, and some black pepper being the most obvious flavors. Soft and mouth coating, but lacking in tannin structure making it a bit flat on the finish. I have to agree with some of the other tasters on CT. The fruit seems to have faded considerably since the first time I tried it. When I had it the first time, it was screaming with juicy black fruits. This time, however, the fruit was but a whisper. What remains, nonetheless, is a wine that has aged gracefully, with prominent notes of cedar, tobacco, and autumn leaves -- which is appropriate, I suppose, for a wine in its autumn years. As it opened up with air, some muted elements of blackberries and cassis did appear. After about 4 hours, the wine started to fade and decline. My recommendation is to go ahead and drink this wine, as I don't really think it will get much better with time. (4856 views)

I tasted this at the winery, and I was not very impressed. It was very coppery, it tasted almost surgical (?). Or at least that is what I was thinking. The nose was green. Tasted very tight and underdeveloped. The fruit was overwhelmed by the coppery/calcium flavors. The predominant flavors that I noticed were metallic, bloody, and green like unripe fruit.
