2001 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 4/25/2024Papies93

Decanted for 30 minutes and a good addition . The arbitrage in absolute quality vs price is defined by this beautiful chateau. And we do mean absolute cause the wine is beautiful ( as is always in good years) irrespective of its prices. We joked it’s these random wine openings every now and then that remind us the beauty and greatness of classic Bordeaux. This a wine we have tried a few times in the last 15 years and much like last time in 2020 ( Papies 93) it excelled . Classic through and through from nose to tail and now is in a good secondary phase but the fruit is vibrant and very much present. A magnificent wine , easy 93 on its own merit , exceptional price to quality and this will perform easily for another 15yrs minimum. So happy we have more and easily will add if we see any flying around. (88 views)

2001 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 1/22/2024Chrysostomus91

Good wine, but typical for a 2001 Bdx it is fresh and pure, but the palate can't match the quality of the impressions in the nose. Very light weighted. On day 1 it was even a bit sour, acid was too strong. On day 2 the wine improved, the acid went into the background but still no pressure on the palate, no volume. Very green and light. 91 pts for the beautiful nose. (88 for the palate and the slightly drying tannins at the end). (606 views)

Beautiful and rustic bouquet with autumn impressions and some barnyard and graphite in the bouquet as well as the taste. Beautiful acidity and still slightly sticky tannin. Fully mature now and the wine will probably stay on this level for several years if stored properly. Pity this was my last bottle. (2367 views)

This was in its perfect drinking window and really hit the spot! Classic left bank flavours of cassis, hint of tobacco, graphite and a lovely savoury finish. Delicious and my favourite wine of the night vs the 2004 branaire ducru (product of a tougher vintage) and 2005 beychevelle (excellent intensity but the Lagrange was more ready to drink and refined as a result). Excellent stuff. (2029 views)

Sad to say this is my last bottle, because it has so much more to give. Classic Bordeaux, with all the pencil shaving, cassis and a splash of kirsch. Mid-weight, retaining enough structure to balance the fruit, and an expansive, long finish reinforce the classic descriptor. This is the Bordeaux I fell in love with from vintages in the 1980s, and it’s how I have wanted to experience the wines. (2073 views)

2001 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 2/5/2022Acove91

Writing from memory. About a 2 hour decant. Deep garnet with a good amount of brown. On the nose, dried cherry, fig, licorice, leather. On the palate, smooth acidity, medium+ body, insanely fine tannin that only reveals itself on the finish. Layers of fig, cherry, blueberry, leather, etc that has all integrated into one complex and perplexing flavor. Medium+ finish. My first grand cru bdx and it didn't disappoint. Not a great vintage so I'm sure Lagrange has better wines. Also probably would have been better ~5 years ago but is still drinking just fine. (1290 views)

Decanted off sediment, open for 2 hours or so.

Nose quite complex and tertiary. Fall leaves, wet tobacco, leather, maybe could be convinced of graphite, maybe even some fig. Drying and decaying red fruits. Palate is another story. Still quite young and bright. Balanced acid with bright red fruits, crushed gravel, slightly chalky. Maybe some tobacco too. Tannins are pretty much resolved. Finish starts to show a little tannin but very well integrated and subtle. Otherwise mimics the palate with the gravelly, chalky rock character.

Drink now, at peak for me. If not, within 5 years. Nose shows the age but the palate is still young. (1344 views)

This wine was the beginning of a nice trio of a Left bank 2001 lineup. I must say that each wine was just as pleasurable as the last and on its own, each would have scored slightly better. Drinking before a 2001 Pichon Baron and a 2001 Latour, this wine set the stage with its vibrant mature nature and the marriage of freshness and decaying fruit. Lovely clay filled bordeaux that just lacked the length to be hanging with the big boys, but the charm brought it close. DRINK (3359 views)

OK - this wine tastes fresh and mature all at the same time... so good! Right out of the bottle. Big nose of Blackcurrant, leaps out of the glass... fruit is muted, but the acid keeps it alive, and carry's the lingering finish. Starts light on the palate, but the flavor deepens and really commands your attention. After an hour in the glass, the spice comes shining through... ** Day 2 floral and harmonious - yum. 13% alcohol. The good long dense cork is penetrated a quarter of the way, with one much deeper inroad. Decanted for an hour. The colour is very deep with hardly any sign of evolution.
Deep mature nose with pure fruit (blackcurrant mostly) harmoniously flavoured by quality oak. The mouth is just as good, showing balance and energy, with excellent acidity in the finish. Fully resolved tannins are there only through the sense of grip that they impart.
This is nearly opulent enough to pass for a Pauillac, while retaining all the elegance of St Julien. A perfect companion to our leg of lamb (is there a better combination out there ?). This is ready to drink, but there is certainly no rush to do so.
A great success, and a repeat purchase. (4025 views)

Enjoyed over 3 hours after opening. Aromas and flavors of lightly roasted coffee bean, graphite, pencil shavings, worn leather and black fruit skins dominate the profile with good integration. Medium bodied, medium acid, with noticeable dry, dusty tannins. Shorter, dry finish seems to be the biggest shortcoming of this wine. Paired well with filet. Typical 'Left Bank' Bordeaux stylings. Enjoyable, not amazing. Satisfies the itch for a typical, aged, slightly above average Bordeaux. (3935 views)

I bought and drank a few bottles of this wine ages ago, in about 2006, so I was really excited to see where it had gone in the last decade. It's certainly better now, less tannic and more aromatic. Upon popping the cork, it had a really nice earthy fruitiness but that faded rather quickly. The nose then became dominated with oak, red fruit, and cigar. Over the hours we drank it, a lot of cedar and rolled tobacco emerged. The palate was mostly fruit, cigar, and cedar, smooth and enjoyable with tannins that faded considerably over 8 hours of drinking. Based on my experience with the wine, it's hard for me to say if it was better 5 years ago than today or will be better in 5 years. Perhaps it is in a good place now.

I enjoyed this wine, but I was hoping for a bit more X-factor. I've had a number of $30 and $40 second wines of famous Chateau (eg. Alter Ego from Palmer and Tourelles de Longueville from Pichon Baron, both from 2001). While this wine wasn't that much more expensive, I feel like it should deliver more as a Grand Cru Classe 3rd Growth than a second wine or a Cru Bourgeois. My experience with this wine made me agree with notes from Neal Martin and Robert Parker that called Lagrange a sturdy, reliable St. Julien but not an inspiring one. I do feel that the 1989 and particularly the 1990 were really a notch up for Lagrange, but the 1986, 1995, 1996, 2000, and 2003 definitely fit the sturdy but not inspiring description. I'll be serving the 1995 and 2003 at my wedding, and I think that they are have QPR because I got lucky and found them for $45 a bottle. I'm not sure the wines are worth the normal $75-$90 price tag. P&P but needing four hours plus in a decanter to start singing. Served at 13C. Dark crimson colour but mature appearance on the nose with aromas of pencil, rotten roses, four-squared mint, earth and mushrooms. Very Paulliac-like rather than a truly Saint Julien.
On the palate showed dry and short. Good at its best.
For this useful vintage a honest, very dry and attractive St.Julien bottle. In my view this needed extra cellaring.
Tried to match it with a leg of young lamb for lunch. Consumed during the evening. I am a patient man.

Abierta y servida pero necesitando más de cuatro horas en un decantador para empezar a brillar. Servido a 13C.

This has developed quite nicely with its tobacco, smoke, cigar box, blackberry and cedar wood personality. The tannins are ripe, the fruit is ample and fresh, finish with a spicy, cassis and pomegranate note. While fun to taste now, this will get better with a few more years in the bottle. (4595 views)

Regular dinner group (@ CdW Bordeaux 2000 vs 2001.): Firm cassis bouquet. There is some development because the wine is not extremely primary anymore, but in fact the wine is a bit locked; even after 5 hours of air. On the palate cassis as well and slightly sticky tannin. For the moment 89, but this wine needs at least another 4 - 5 years of cellaring and then the score will most likely be a few points higher. (9093 views)

Chateau bottle, held two years, double decanted. Clean cork, no sediment. Opaque, red rim. Pretty aromas of red fruits, crushed stone, and a little green veggie action. Medium bodied, smooth, and compared to other Lagrange vintages a tad under-ripe, or perhaps a blend including a few more young vines than you will find in later vintages. Acidity is bright although not in balance completely. Smooth, long finish. It is tasty, but the most enjoyable aspect of this wine is on the nose -- at least at this point.

This chateaux continues to improve over the past years as vines planted in the 80's and 90's contnue to mature, smaller tanks are used to vinify and develop each plot to its potential, and -- new for 2009 -- improved sorting will continue to improve selection. None of this investment is cheap -- it is an endorsement of Bruno Eynard that he receives continued backing from Suntori.

I would love to see this 2001 harvest come through the Lagrange cellars in 2009 - I bet the resulting wine would be even better. (8890 views)

What a really nice bottle of wine. Garnet in color. Cassis and sweet tobacco on the nose. Found this at the store and brought it home and popped and poured. Gave nice sweet fruit and cedar early, then closed down a bit; this was much more open on day 3 when I had the leftovers. Just really enjoyable, smooth, traditional St. Julien, that has developed some nice secondary characteristics. Not as powerful or aromatic as the 03 Lagrange I had recently, but this is better balanced, more ready to drink right now.
