Youthful, but in a perfect spot, the nose expresses blackberries, smoke, charcoal, wild herbs and espresso with little effort. Full-bodied, lush, firm, and filled with salty black cherries, blackberries, chocolate, licorice, and plums, the minerality becomes more apparent as the finish lingers. Pop and pour, or decant for 1 hour, either way this is singing. Drink from 2024-2040. (1390 views)

Decanted for 7 hours. It needed it, a couple of weeks ago I decanted a bottle for 5 hours and that was insufficient. Delightful nose of berries and clean lingering finish. I would not ask for more from this wine. It met my expectations of a full bodied right bank wine. (2033 views)

Popped and poured due to circumstance, otherwise would have decanted for several hours.

With the tremendous 2000 vintage coming into its prime now, expectations were high for this one. Nose - Bright red fruit, strawberries, forest floor, oregano and some subtle floral notes. Very promising. Mouth started off a bit light and mute, but after 30 minutes in the glass started to come around, displaying big bold fruit, medium to full bodied structure, soft velvety tannins and superb balance and depth. A harmonious, elegant wine with big presence, at its prime now.

* If it weren't for unfortunate circumstance, the wine would have been opened several hours ahead of dinner and decanted, which I feel would have yielded a much stronger performance, so will revisit if I get a chance, and expecting a 92-93 point performance under the right conditions. (2280 views)

Lovely wine on first opening. Very deep red to garnet. Dark violets. Good balance with a brightness and enough tannin to last. Acid and tannin diminished after an hour decant. Bordeaux masterclass at Summa 2022 (Weingut Alois Lageder, Margreid, South Tyrol): A decadent nose, riper and more intense than the preceding wines with sweet dark fruits bordering on rum pot, accompanied by some rusty iron. In the mouth the wine is surprisingly civilized with good freshness and more red fruits. Rounded mouthfeel with a very good texture and fine tannin. However, it feels not as dense as the Gruaud Larose and not as complex and refined as the La Petite Eglise. At or maybe slightly past peak. (3371 views)

Definitely ready to go, all the flowers, licorice, crushed rock, cherries, plums, smoke, earth and tobacco make the right impression on the nose. On the palate, the wine is soft, round, slightly polished and loaded with sweet, deep red fruits with a touch of salty cocoa in the end note. Great night of over indulgence- and then cap’d off with great Signet scotch. 2000 Pavie Macquin, 2019 Tor VHR Pure Magic, 2018 Del Dotto Single Cluster, 2016 Abreu Las Posadas (killer even now with 4x decant and then 1.5 hours in decanter- stupid young but WOTN) and 2016 Kinsman Anjea (runner up) and 2019 La Pelle (best QPR delicious). Zero notes only simple impressions.

2000 Pavie Macquin is still youthful even 21 years in. Lots of life left, higher toned red fruits with full secondary flavors. (3404 views)

opened and decanted this with grilled spatchcocked chicken after reading Neal Martin's tastings of the 2000 and 2001 from a number of chateaux. He did not love this wine and I can see why, particularly to his more precise and classic palate. The wine is quite ripe ripe and hardly a classic, even for the right bank. That said, perfectly pleasant to drink and I don't get VA or other signs of excess. I think the wine is better at lower termps, but perfectly good drink (2595 views)

Totally delicious. Decanted for sediment and evidently in great form based on the aroma given off during that process. Sweetish strawberry fruit on the nose, but this wasn't at all confected: just dense, perfectly-mature fruit with hints of truffle and coffee. This impression continued onto the palate, with sweet cherry, minted lamb, white pepper, burnt ends and black tea. Still some tannin to give it structure and chew. This pours medium garnet in the glass, with medium minus bricking. The nose is a recognizable and fairly classic expression of right bank bordeaux. Complex and maturing aromas of dark chocolate, wet hay, dried mint, dried cherry, and plum all powerfully waft from the glass. The palate is lovely entering on sweet dried dark cherries and optimally ripened plum. Tannins are velvety and medium minus, with great medium plus acid. The finish lingers impressively showing dried cherry, plum, and a lovely tea-like note. Very, very impressed with this. (3225 views)

This is outstanding Saint Emilion from northern neighbor of famous Chateau Pavie!! Took 30 min to open up. Dark purple with classic nose of dark fruits: cherries, plums, currant jelly, figs, leather, licorice and truffles. Roach and profound, palate is medium to full body with prominent black fruit and truffles, with notes of licorice and mocha. Tannins nearly resolved and integrated, juicy acidity. Opened this on our first cold(ish) evening for this winter season here in HK. (Dunno about the rest of you, but I find cold weather a better match for red wine than even roast beef...) As for the wine, it's a real surprise. I remember opening a bottle years ago: it was such dark inky blue/black stuff you could stick a quill in it and compose a prelude and fugue. But now, at 20 years old, it's turned dark ruby, with a faint orange rim and whiff of tawny. Medium bodied, with a perfumed nose, vibrant layers of fruit and a finish that rolls on like the movie credits in Lords of the Ring, it is a delight to drink on a cold dry night. Terrific! On the nose, red berry fruit, camphor, and earth. On the palate, currants, blackberry, and bitter tobacco/charcoal, with notes of red berries and something herbal on the medium to long finish, with light tannins and good acidity. The tobacco/charcoal flavor was unusually strong, presumably from oak, and although it faded over several hours it remained strong enough to be distracting. This is better on the nose than on the palate. As other notes here say, this seems to be at the beginning of its drinking window, not in the middle: the Cellartracker window is too early. Five more years should help this integrate more of the oak, and decanting helps at this stage. This was an average value at about $80. (3393 views)

Unlike other right bank wines from the vintage, which in the main have entered their prime drinking window, this is lagging behind in its development. It probably needs another year or two to be at its best. However, that said it is a very impressive wine and should be outperforming the excellent 1998 in the future. The nose is is deep and opulent with blackcurrant and red berry fruits dominant. The palate is still in primary stage but has great depth and balance with excellent acidity. There is a distinctive smokiness which is very appealing, but the tannin is still a distraction, even after time in the decanter and in the glass. It has a decent finish and once this hits its peak I can see myself scouring this a point or two higher. (2953 views)

A slightly disappointing bottle given my expectations. Upon opening, a concentrated nose of black fruits, pencil shavings, graphite, and a nickel-like minerality with a hint of raw maduro tobacco. On the palate, a little bit of brett-with a somewhat unpleasant barnyard aftertaste that overpowered the fruit. Better with a juicy and fatty burger.

Softened the next day but I still couldn't get past the funk on the palate. Looking forward to the next bottle--this wasn't bad, but it felt as though a great deal was lingering under the funk and unable to get out.

EDIT: Polished the last half glass after 24 hours. Beautiful blue and black fruit finally emerging. At this stage, it's a 95+ point stunner of a Right Bank Bordeaux. (5386 views)

This wine is delicious, but I would almost certainly assess it incorrectly if tasting it blind. It comes across more as an ultra-high-end Napa cab or meritage than as a Bordeaux. 2 hour decant. 12 months on from last TN this has started to resolve but still has a way to go. Very rich, very supple merlot-dominated blend. Very dry. This is a very grown up merlot - you certainly couldn't call it a jelly baby. Previously overt acidity has integrated well, but tannins are still pretty broody and will need time to soften. Extremey smooth and rounded on the palate with plenty of oak making its presence felt. I get the feeling this is in a transition phase. The baby fat of youth has gone but the tannins are still a little brawny and need time to mature. Overall a big, concentrated and well-made right bank that just about stays on the right side of the caricature line. Very enjoyable now but hopefully those tannin will work themselves through in another 2 or 3 years. A real winter warmer!

EDIT : +24 hours in decanter. Just a little sweetness and a lick of licorice creeping in but those tannins are still powerfully evident on the finish. Extremely nice right now but as long as those tannins softer it can improve significantly. Plenty of fruit here so it has a great chance to get there. (11421 views)

Tannin and acidity in balance, but not yet resolved fully. Bold, but not overextracted. Could deserve a significantly higher rating in a few years. Try again in 2012. Rated more highly than the other 2000s on the night (Cos & La Lagune were corked, Ducru & Montrose were v. good indeed, Haut Bailly was lovely but quite forward, Batailley was good, Hosanna was disappointingly flat). Tentative look at this one to see where it is. 1 hour decant. Very dark garnet, virtually opaque. Nose is extremely ripe with masses of plum and dark chocolate with a strong floral lift of violets. Full bodied, and the ripeness continues with the plum conserve notes evident OTN being joined by a real slug of strong dark licorice and a little hint of charcoal. Very rich, very concentrated - big extraction here. Sumptuous and supple merlot character strong through the mid-palate, and a little oak-and-cigar box flourish on the finish which is of good length. Tannins still to fully resolve but fine. Main concern at the moment is the acidity - there is a a heap of it in here. Having said that there's plenty of fruit to help it along. A well-made powerful and rather "international" St Emillion but excellent. Coming along well but really needs another 3-5 years. If the acidity works itself through then this could be a real stunner with a long life ahead of it. From 2010 but if you've only got a couple hold off for 3 or 4 if you can. 93+

EDIT : +24 hours after decant and this has clamped down pretty hard. Acidity now dominating the fruit which has curled up like an armadillo, leaving it a little tart (the fruit, not the armadillo. I mean honestly..). Will be interesting to watch this develop (and hope it resolves to full potential). Hold 3 years+ (10051 views)

This is kind of an old school St. Emilion, with some mulberry, red fruit character, very chewy and pretty dense, good flavor, some maturity here, long finish, drying tannins. This should get better with more time, it is a heck of a right bank wine, this would be great with a nice steak! The finish lasts a lonnng time, this has very nice concentration. (11661 views)

Consumed at Danno's with the 2000 Pavie and the 2000 Gaja Contesia. Popped and poured with no decanting. Extremely tight on the nose, giving hints of cassis and tobacco, much more traditional Bordeaux nose compared to the Pavie. Very youthful with ripe firm tannins and a thinner mouthfeel compared to the lush, velvety Pavie. Long and pleasing finish with a currant and blueberry aftertaste. Try again after 2010. My first 2000 Bordeaux, and my first serious infanticide. To celebrate my entree into child-killing, we consumed it with broiled filet mignon, mushrooms, and caramelized onions, and in an attempt to make the slaughter a learning experience, I took more detailed notes than usual.

The wine was decanted at 5:00pm. I hit the first strands of fine, sandy sediment with about an inch of wine left in the bottle, with the punt just breaking the surface. The wine was red with a very slight tinge of purple at the edge of the decanter, fading almost immediately to impenetrable blackness. Telltale aromas of ripe cassis and tobacco on the nose, but these were muted. I thought I might wait an hour or two before giving it a try, but curiosity and/or thirst got the better of me at 5:30, and so I tried a sip. Some ripe fruit, just enough to counter the minerals and tobacco, but all of this was muted on the palate as well. At 6pm, another sip. Still muted on the nose, but the palate was beginning to widen out a bit, with more cassis and hints of blackberry, and deeper minerality, with a moderately persistent finish delivering echoes of tobacco. At this point, I thought that if the wine ever opened up, it was going to be a beauty. I'm also left to wonder about a hobby that presents me with the choices of waiting two hours or ten years to realize pleasure, and how, after choosing two hours, it seems like ten years anyway. I know, I know, a true hedonist would take this opportunity to go open another bottle...

Dinner at 7:30. The nose is surprising, given what was showing before...it's baked fruit cobbler. Blackberries and blueberries, and I want to be clear: no blueberry milkshakes here. It's dark fruit, but with the added character that cooking imparts, as well as hints of tobacco in the background. The palate has now filled out nicely, with cassis, minerals, and tobacco in harmony, and a persistent tobacco-laden finish, perhaps 20 seconds. A rib-eye might have been a better dinner companion, as the wine has enough stuffing to stand up to heartier flavors. By around 8:15 or so, no more analysis from me, just sitting back enjoying a really nice wine with my wife, chuckling at her purple-stained teeth, knowing mine are probably worse. Bottom line: whether you're a two-hour or ten-year personality, you won't be disappointed. (12984 views)

Sampled at a dinner sponsored by Sam's featuring Robert Parker. WOW! Great nose. Ripe fruit and concentration. I loved this one, and wound up purchasing a few. Parker commented: “An up and coming superstar. Delicate, but with an inner core of great strength and intensity. Tremendous persistence on the finish. A serious wine.” IMO, this surprisingly outclassed the next wine, the Monbousquet. A show of hands at the tasting also affirmed it. (13750 views)
