2004 Domaine de Trévallon (France, Provence, Vin de Pays des Bouches-du-Rhône) 12/24/2023Rani93

Opened one hour prior to drinking. Lots of stuffing here, herbal notes, bright red fruit and a hint of vegetable stew. Lots of acidity on the palate. Tannins are rustic but not aggressive. Structured and lingering. (527 views)

From my warmer than textbook cellar reaching 18°C in summer with a perfect cork as corked yesterday. Garnet with no orange hue in thin layers. From the start medium intense and elegant, so nuanced nose of red currants, herbs, with swirling black fruits, dusty wood, thyme, oregano getting more intense over an hour of air (no decant). On the palate this is without any heavyness, excellent to outstanding intensity, refreshing acidity, still round but very present tannin and good length. 5/14/17/10. Though fully mature it has a long way to go, I believe. From a textbook cellar of 12°C whole year this may be quite young to fully appreciate it. But also true: After 2 hours in the partly emptied bottle it became less nuanced with dominating cherry notes and adstringency. 2023-2030 Dunnuck gave it 94 points in 2015 and a drinking window at least till 2025. Pausing for the Cause 2022 (Part 2) (Chicago, IL): From magnum. Yeah, it does kind of smell like cabernet and syrah. Certainly a very generous nose, which promises more than the palate has to offer unfortunately. There's a little thinness and less breadth on the palate, even though this finishes with an incredible amount of tannin. Hard to say whether more time is needed, or whether this was better a few years ago, to be honest. (2005 views)

Mid ruby colorless rim. Look healthy at 17 years old.

High toned freshly picked juicy blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, pungent black pepper, herbaceous green bell pepper, graphite, cool soil, cedar, some leather and tobacco. Beautiful and elegant aroma.

Bright acidity, plenty of grippy tannins giving structure to this medium bodied bold wine. Undeniably elegant and fresh which is so Trevallon. A vintage to savor now and over the next decade. (1592 views)

Still replete with bright blackberry and damson fruit, graphite edge, polished oak notes, licorice, a touch of eucalyptus and spice, pencil shavings and plenty of acidity and tannins. Slightly lean when first opened but slowly evolving in decanter. After 4 hours, tannins slightly grippy but lovely and fine-grained. Some earthiness, a touch of leather and savoury, meaty edge. I think this has still got plenty of life in it and would be happy to try it in 5-10 years time. More rounded and plush than the 2003 (1571 views)

This wine is not for wussies!

This was firing on all cylinders tonight, day 2, and much better on the 2nd night, as others have noted. This is of decidedly old-school stock, briny, and reminds one of a traditional old green St. Joseph, full of racy acid, freshness, and vibrancy. At the same time, it's mixed with singed rosemary, tart violets, lavender, damson fruit, and slightly bretty canned spinach. It's thrilling, still with gutsy high-toned tannins at the end, and very juicy. High acid year in Bandol etc. Lots of fun, love this gem of les Alpilles. (1850 views)

By far the best showing yet for this wine, but I did have to wait for the second day for this wine really to open up....
Basically unevolved deep ruby hue with no signs of aging.
At first the nose the closed as was the case for previous bottles.
24 hours later, with some air, the nose open up to show some red fruit, smoky aromas ( Syrah dominated), brambly aromas.
On the palate, the tight and linear Cab Sauv character came through.
The aftertaste was both longer and more complex than in the past.
I will another 2-3 years before I continue drinking this wine.

Perhaps slightly better than the previous bottle but still a considerable disappointment.
Basically, this wine has no charm, which is not characteristic of this domaine.
Lean, mean, austere with little evolution taking place. The wine was decanted hoping to soften the unforgiving tannins. while there was a slight softening, it was insufficient to make this wine really pleasant. Only the cold cuts that it was served with helped out a little.
I'm less optimistic now than previously as to the future improvement of this wine. I will not count on it and will work my way through most of a case with low expectations. What went wrong that year? (1814 views)

Upon first opening, nose is dusty and jammy; on the palate stewed fruit, a bit disjointed acid on the finish and somewhat monotone -- however, from 30 mins to 2 hrs of breathing (in the bottle) it evolved and was lovely. Round, silky mouthfeel. Ripe dark fruit, classic soft cabernet tones dominate - wood, hint of cocoa, lingering tannins. Enjoyable now and enough life for a couple of years but needs time to open. I bought six of these off the back of a spectacular bottle of the 01 earlier this year. Not much love for this vintage on CT but this bottle was singing. Red fruited, hints of cassis, touch of herbs but deep red fruits at the youthful end of maturity. No problems with tannins here. Gave the wine a three hour decant. I have had several bottles of this vintage over the last several years. Opened one last week and drank without decanting or waiting for it to open up. The fruit was a bit flat, acidity and tannins balanced - it seemed to open up on the last glass. We enjoyed it but not as much as ones drunk earlier. This bottle might have opened more with time; suggestion - if it tastes a bit flat or tired, try leaving for an hour to open. (1969 views)

(1771 views)

This score is based on current hedonistic value. I expect this wine to be more pleasant, but for now this wine remains unforgivably closed. This is why all descriptions center around acidity and tannin.
The color of this wine alone tells you than it's essentially un-evolved; after 13 years it's still ruby red without any hint of aging. It reminds me of the 1975 chateau Montrose that I had not long ago. Is there a potential equilibrium that this wine will reach? possibly, but who is going to wait another 10-15 years or longer?
The aromatics are quite lovely but ultimately wine is made to be consumed and it does not make for a pleasant drink. Anything else at this point should be considered denial. (1769 views)

Very enticing. Ripe blackcurrant contrasted with some pleasantly green and herbal notes. Light on its feet but with mouth-coating tannin. A light-hearted rendition of the opulence of good Bordeaux without any of the po-faced, buttoned up seriousness. Could definitely age further based on the tannin and acidity but not quite sure why one would do so as the weight is perfect now. Finding fault with this wine for having fresh acidity is massively missing the point... (1849 views)

I have to agree with the consensus here; this wine had lovely, fresh and delicate aromatics but the palate was far too acidic to succeed. It was a classy sort, refined and pointed, but seemed missing the fruit that would undoubtably make it excellent. Truly, it's difficult to recall a wine at this price level that offered so little. Maybe I'm missing the point and in 5-10 years, this will come into its own. I doubt it, however, and suspect the acidity would only dominate more and you would be drinking (even more) expensive lemon juice. 88 (1807 views)

Disappointing, even if not bad, I was really looking forward to pop this bottle that I have kept in my cellar since 2008.
Nose with liqueur nots/kirsch, alcohol, darker blue & black fruit, plums, black currant, black berries, earth, damp forest & some herbs.
Palate a little too dense, packed with blackberries, blueberries and plums, dry leather, some herbs and earthiness/soil.
I miss transparency and get a somewhat clumsy and extracted, as well as a bit hot, impression in this wine.

A fairly deep colour, showing some maturity; a ripe nose and a fairly full palate with blackberry fruit (from the Syrah, which seems to dominate), somewhat stewed and with some rough tannin. This is more developed than a previous bottle drunk a couple of years ago, but I don't think it is a great example of Trévallon. I have opened several bottles of this vintage over the past year -- in line with the tastings notes by others, I've experienced quite a bit of bottle variation in the 4 bottles I've tasted. The bottles have ranged from delicious (like this current bottle) to searing acidity with a lingering chalky, cotton-mouth aftertaste with zero dimension of fruit (that bottle was returned as flawed). Today's bottle is superb - opened with Coravin - on day 2 tasting: leafy, sanguine, gamey, ripe fruit, smoke, cocoa , balanced acidity, moderate lingering tannins, sediment that can't be avoided with Coravin - still delicious and complex. Day 1 tasting seemed more closed -- so decanting in advance would optimize the wine. I think you could drink this over another 3-5 yrs. 92+ (2147 views)

After being open for about an hour, showed mainly syrah notes on the nose, soft redfruit and stones. In between medium and full bodied and very expressive. Comes across as mostly cabernet notes at first, but the longer it's open, the more prominent the syrah becomes and the softer, more integrated and more balanced the wine becomes. Mostly blackfruit notes at first, balanced with syrah, redfruit notes. There's a depth here, but overall the wine is very accessible. Really surprised by the notes showing bitterness and overly spicy qualities as this bottle didn't have anything like that. Seems close to peak, but there was good tannic structure on the finish (that integrated nicely with time open), so I expect this wine should stay at this level for several more years. I have had more Trevallon in the past 6 weeks than I have had in my previous 30 years of wine drinking. Lucky me. I don't know if I prefer the '05 or '04. This bottle is perfectly mature with a wonderful right bank Bordeaux personality (maybe a lush Pomerol) mixed with some peppery Syrah earthiness. I am shocked by other’s notes on this wine. Just too much acidity here which keeps the wine bitter and out of balance. I suppose it could evolve over time given that the classic Provence syrah fruit is descernable underneath but I wouldn't bet on it. The 2004 Trevallon was a real walk on the wild side, showing blue and black fruits, perfumed floral tones and sweet spice with an intensity which seemed to reach up from the glass yet ended ultimately with freshness. On the palate, soft textures gave way to red fruits and minerals but quickly firmed up to reveal gripping tannin which seemed to saturate the senses and last through the close. Mineral, meaty and herbaceous at the same time. Full bodied with refined tannins and very good acidity. Interesting wine, but not my cup of tea. (2386 views)

There is some attractive, fresh, raspberry fruit, but overall the wine is rather restrained and closed up. Some dryish tannin appears to be masking the fruit, so it will perhaps be better in 2 - 3 years. As it is now, it is slighlty disappointing. (2705 views)

91-92 + pts (3595 views)

Come on folks, it's too expensive and SOUR as hell...you don't get anything of the syrah, feels like a bordeaux (pauillac) in the mouth but just tastes somehow wrong.
90+ for the individual style. (3580 views)

Double decanted for three hours, served at room temperature. Color: Medium to Dark Red. Nose: Black Currant, Cinnamon, Black Cherry, Clove, Coffee. Palate: see nose. Finish: Medium. Tannins: Medium. Alcohol: 13 % well integrated. Medium bodied mouthfeel with initial dark fruit. Mid-palate adds baking spices transitioning into a tannic finish with underlining coffee. Nicely balanced acidity and overall not over the top. Just missing a little soul to get really excited about. 89-90 points. (2960 views)

Dark red; pleasant fresh strawberry nose, hint of "smoke" / leather; fresh lean and full taste, structured, quite fine for a southern European wine (no warm jamminess here); long lingering aftertaste, perhaps a bit of green grass to it; very pleasant (3092 views)

Tempier Tasting @ Joost B. (Netherlands): Way too young. Still extremely primal. Aromatics and complexity are tucked away. Hard to judge at the moment, because of the crackingly young fruit. Can't see through that, at the moment. 15/20 (3486 views)

Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club" 2010-01; Domaine de Trévallon: a vertical of 12 vintages. (@ DJ): The bouquet is still a bit locked. There is some cassis and paprika. Also on the palate the wine is a bit locked. There are dark fruits and good bitterness and also some unripe flavors. The tannin is soft, but still a bit too young. Give this wine another year or 2 to open up. (3746 views)

Trevallon 1985-2004: Echoes of the 1999 here with excellent freshness as well as slight herbaceousness and a hint of cheesiness though the fruit is darker and more syrah driven than the 1999's. Lovely mint and mineral top notes and a whisper of violet. In the mouth this is tight and crisp with ripe tannins in balance allowing for the mineral tinged cherry fruit to peek through on the midpalate before clamping down on the finish. Great mouth feel and energy again. This should be a winner and may very well be the star of the line-up in due time. 2013-2025 (5188 views)

Medium ruby color, youthful appearing. Complex cedar, cassis aromatics. Nice weight and lively acidity. The flavors are currently dominated by the Cabernet component, but this is a very successful, well balanced Cabernet-Syrah blend that is already approachable but structured to age well for a decade or more.
