This bottle was lovely. 60 minute decant. Beautiful soft tertiary fungal flavors and farmyard smells. Seemed to be at a peak. I drank through a half case of this vintage years ago, and it was never this great in its youthful primary phase. If you've kept bottles this long, I hope you strike magic like we did tonight. A rather mature, rustic and one-dimensional medoc with fading black fruit, coffee and peppery aromas and a tight, slightly dry finish. Drink within 3 years. Tasted 2024.

Funk. Barnyard and more funk. For the first hour it just lingered. Pretty tight and tannic upon opening with the fruit being very reluctant to reveal itself.

Poured a 1/2 glass, aerated and decanted the rest. At around the 1 hour mark, the funk was gone, revealing clean earth, mushroom, and green pepper on the nose. The palate showed tart red cherry, spice, excellent structure, round and integrated tannins, and full-body. Definitely give this some time. Highly recommend a decant to let it unfold. (1713 views)

P&P. While not the most profound Bord that has past my way lately, it could well be the most relaxed and comfy claret in recent memory. Really solid enjoyable claret from a great year holding up well.

Nose. Classic aged Bordeaux nose ot pencil shavings, leather and earth, but with a still pure blackcurrant follow through. Based on the nose in fine fettle.

Palate. Crunchy fruit hit of blackcurrants, unripened plum and redcurrants. Into the mid palate the secondary characteristics of leather and earth join the fray together with some vanillin oak. Ripe but still present tannins, and balanced acidity help glide the wine through and down.

A very nice aged mid weight Bordeaux still with plenty to say for itself and no sign of decline. Has another 5-10 years I would say. The only criticism is that it’s a little bit dilute and lacks a bit of presence and excitement. (2380 views)

From a 750ml bottle purchased on the secondary with a like-new fill. Decanted for an hour, but I think a decant for sediment (of which there was quite a lot) and serving immediately was really the way to go with this.

Dark in the glass, displaying just a touch of bricking and showing a gorgeous nose of nicely aged black cherry, woody undergrowth, and cherry pipe tobacco—quintessential aged Cantemerle. Better, however, on the nose than the palate, which was showing the same profile but was medium to light in concentration, short on finish, and probably had more acidity than tannin at this point. I’ve never had this vintage of Cantemerle before, but this bottle seemed like a wine that was drying out. I really enjoyed this and I love Cantemerle, but the score here was definitely pulled down by the palate. The nose was easily a 93, but the palate was somewhere around an 86 at this point. Popped cork and poured. A bit chunky at first but clean nose. After 30 minutes, wine really shined and gets better with time - Oh My. In glass no bricking at rim and dark garnet. Nose of leather and tobacco with tertiary components. The suppleness of this wine is extraordinary, long finish with grippy tannins still at 22 years of age. Keeps coming on which is incredible for a Haut Medoc wine of this caliber. Savor every sip of this fine wine. Wish I had a magnum to share with friends. After an hour decant, which this wine really needed, it swirls on the palate with some fruit, pencil lead, black cherry cherry, blackberry, plum, and acerola cherry finish. This bottle, purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, was decanted off of its sediment and allowed two hours in decanter prior to serially tasting over the ensuing three hours. A deep garnet blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, it remains laden with dark plum, red currant, fig, savory herb, earth and tobacco aromas. The flavors mirror the nose and the wine retains beautiful freshness. With soft residual tannins, well-integrated alcohol (13%) and equally well-integrated oak, this is a stellar Cantemerle that is in its prime. Comparably cellared bottles should provide pleasure for another 4-5 years. Drink now-2025. (2900 views)

Outperformed a 2000 Montelena due to its distinct characteristics.

This is drinking excellently right now. Rich nose of tobacco, black fruits, smoked wood, and a hint of Brett. It has more of that on the palate with additional red cherry notes and tartness. Medium bodied and juicy. Simpler to drink compared to the 2000 Sociando I had recently, which had more lift and density and required more analysis, but the Cantemerle is still so pleasant.

Such a pleasant wine and one that has transformed a great deal from its youth. Great drinking window right now and such a powerful value play if you got some at a good time. (3239 views)

A pleasant Bordeaux that is drinking at peak for my taste. Light red cherry and red raspberry fruit, a bit of green pepper, chocolate, and tobacco on the nose, which is nicely expressive and remains more fruit driven. On the palate, the wine is medium to light bodied in texture with resolved tannins and a fairly high acidity level contributing a sense of freshness. I find the palate to be a bit lacking in complexity and concentration. I find sweet dried red fruits and the balance a bit more shifted in the direction of the savory bell pepper and tobacco elements, and a nice level of freshness but not the stuffing to improve from here. Fully mature dark ruby with minimal sediment.
We were both in agreement the nose lacked primal fruit and was mainly secondary notes of deep plum, leather and currents.
Still very gnarly with noticeable grip which is unlikely to melt with more cellar time.
We both agreed it was close but didn't warrant 90 points because of hard edges.

Wonderful evolution since the last bottle, for which I provided a tasting note on Christmas Day, 2014. Still a classic Bordeaux - the nose outperforms the other aspects of the wine - pencil lead, cassis, tobacco and black currants. A real testament to the 2000 vintage, I think - a non-classified wine that has continued to get better and better. Bring a Good Bottle at The Kenwood (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour. Part of a flight of '98 Smith Haut Lafitte and '01 Gazin, with this coming in number two tonight and getting better with time in glass. The nose has a sweet cassis quality, blue fruits, quite earthy. The palate is dark cherry, saddle, wood spice, medium plus bodied, with some firmness to the tannins. This could used a little decant time. (2842 views)

Colour belied its near 19 years and whilst the nose was a little restrained this was initially a somewhat boistrous affair.
After a couple of hours, it mellowed and was a really smashing drink. Remained so the next day. Great balance between acidity, fruit and softening tanins. Still a few years left on this but guess its sitting happily in its drinking window right now. (2650 views)

P&P though this really developed nicely over the 2 hrs. or so it was open, I'd have given it an hour of air if I could do a do over. At first this came across a tad non discreet, but quickly blossomed into a fine, almost 20 year old Left Bank specimen. Fragrant black currant is nicely off set by subtle earth tones, medium bodied, a bit of tobacco here and there, and all in all a very fine claret. If this bottle is representative, certainly in its prim drinking window and should hold for a good while, probably a matter of personal preference at this point. (3203 views)

Currently in a very nice -- albeit early -- point in its evolution, I would expect it to keep for another two decades. If served blind I might have guessed Pauillac or even Graves. This bottle fits in with my narrative that 2000s are drinking exceptionally well right now. The nose is classic Bordelais -- sweet black fruit, coupled with a touch of dirt and just a hint of herbaceousness. The palate is quite similar in that classical Bordelais way as well, but the fruit here shows a little riper than I would have expected. Nice acidic lift on the backend makes this a pleasant and not-too-heavy wine. The tannins are a touch abrasive still, so I imagine some age would serve this wine well. Westchester Wine School - Premium Bordeaux Tasting (Bar Lees, Mamaroneck, NY): Drank at WWS season-ending tasting, and I supplied this bottle. Decanted for 2 hrs prior to drinking, & there was a bit of sediment. Dark purplish in glass, no overt signs of age in the glass. Fairly generous nose showing a bit of barnyard funk at first, but that blew off leaving some fruit, coffee and notes of cedar. Medium bodied, still very good fruit level with fairly vibrant acidity. Good amounts of cigar box, tobacco, barnyard and earth. Drank opposite a wonderful 1998 Monbousquet which overshadowed this wine somewhat, but this is definitely a very nice wine, if not particularly complext or thought-provoking, that is still drinking quite well. The best and most talked about vintage of Cantemerle in a recent vertical tasting at a hosted dinner party (1970, 1982, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010, all but the first 2 bought en primeur) (Small note - sadly we all missed out on the 1989 which is my favourite Cantemerle but it is now too expensive for me to justify buying it!). Plenty of cedar and surprisingly barnyardy (almost too much at the start, even though you expect a bit of barnyard), good depth, and hitting its stride (don't think it will get much better, but you don't need to rush). PS The 2009 and 2010, much vaunted by Parker, are currently a bit disappointing in my view - hope they improve! (4417 views)

Hitting on all cylinders and still just a baby. Black opaque core, even with less than an ounce in the glass. While I guess you could say it's not focused, it is hitting all the classic Bordeaux notes and playing them well. Tobacco shed, salty leather, mild iodine, and some Christmas spice on the nose that made me do the 'happy dance' from the minute I pulled the cork. Nice medium bodied palate with generous black fruit to accompany all the tertiary flavors, medium long finish. A beautiful bottle of $20 Bordeaux with a long life ahead of it. A bottle of this at a recent Cantemerle/La Lagune vertical showed surprisingly mature. This came across much more youthful and structured, with a core of bright red and dark fruited flavours tinged with earth, cedar shavings, and tobacco, with a spine of grainy tannin beneath. With a few hours in the decanter the tannin eases up and it takes on a very polished, slender mouthfeel. A very elegant, understated, classic style of Bordeaux that I definitely should drink more of. I've had several left bank wines from the 2000 vintage recently that are still WAY too young and need considerably more time in bottle (note that most of these wines are first and second growths). The 2000 Cantemerle seems to be hitting its stride right now and probably will be showing well over the next several years.

The nose was very Bordeaux-esque with strong earthy, leathery notes. The palate was a bit tannic, but not so much that it detracted from the overall taste. Some acid, but it seemed in balance. Great mouth feel - smooth and silky. I liked this wine and will plan to drink my remaining bottles over the next 12-24 months.

Let's be honest - this wine isn't on par with a Palmer, Margaux or the Leovilles, but for the price this doesn't disappoint in the least. Wish I had more sitting around. (4622 views)

Possibly one of the best clarets I've ever had, this surprised even me. Drunk with dinner (not decanted) at the Three Gables in Bradford on Avon, I found this perfectly balanced, with the ageing notes of forest floor and wet leaves present but not overpowering the extremely ripe cassis flavours. Starting in on my own collection of 2000 left bank, and it was an auspicious start. I have had some lesser 00 from a friend's collection in the last year, in this was the best I recall so far. Confirming others on this site, it was quite sharp and backward out the bottle, I quickly decanted it and left decanter open for half hour before we started it with the meal. It takes a full hour to get going and I kept savoring through to dessert maybe 2.5 hrs total with plenty of time in the glass. Not at all fragile, I'm sure it would be fine the next day. It needs steak or other hearty dish. Aromas were medium not shy but not super expressive either. Bright cherry on top of classic 2000 deep cabernet plum black current and wood that I detected in all 2000 left bank so far. On the palate good purity and power with classic Cantemerle leather tar and some cigar box with some sharp acid and integrated tannins that get silky with some time. I agree it is fundamentally a straightforward country style but it is getting some layering of complexity between the fruit and leather/tar.

This is totally different than it tasted in 2003 when the fruit was completely suppressed and the wine was more or less paint stripper. But I was convinced to buy it, and of course I'm crying I didn't get cases at $28 but that is true for all Bordeaux back then. Luckily I went back and picked up more mid decade.

I am giving it 91-92 with potential to reach 93. Nobody knows, but based on this showing, other 00 chateaux I tried, comments on this site and discussion with experts that have access to a lot of wine, I think 00 is still way too young. I noticed some on this site have had a tough time with this wine in the last 1-2 years and that is how 00 has been, jus getting drinkable in 2014. 00 (and this wine) may not peak for another 5 years, and this vintage may prove to be one for the ages. I experienced two peaks with 96 so beware of a lull. I am not going to touch more than 5% of my left bank 00, stay tuned for more reviews in 6-12 months. Unless you detect fragile wines losing their fruit core buy some early drinking 05s and this and that to keep you occupied. Of course, I could be wrong your mileage may vary .... but I don't think so.

Be that as it may, I savored every last drop. It's not the best wine in the world, but I really like it. I'll pick it over some other styles that I would objectively score 93 or 94. Left bank 00 has a certain je ne sais quoi ... (5341 views)

Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, Haut Medoc (Rodwell House): Mid brick red
Some tertiary notes along with mint, roasted herbs and chocolate. A deep, penetrating nose leads to a ripe entry, full-bodied with rich texture and a deep core filled with ripe blackcurrants, soy, black olive, dark chocolate (80%) and vanilla custard (!). The ripe and velvety tannins suggest a warm year, whilst the fruit is sweet and displays excellent concentration - all balanced with lively acidity. A long finish, the wine seems to have all the components here although it isn't that complex and is finished with stewed fruits and cocoa powder. (846 views)

One that I think will continue to evolve and perform well past the 2016 "drink by" date in CT if properly stored (footnote - this one came from my passive cellar, and as a result should be on a fast track relative to bottles stored in a more controlled environment). A medium ruby color; yellowing at the rim. Last consumed 22 months ago. Still dusty and earthy on the nose, along with black cherry, some blackberry/black currant, cedar, tobacco and cigar box from the oak. Similar flavors. The tannins are not totally resolved yet; very slightly acidic on the tongue. Good structure and acid. A decent finish. A nice Southern Medoc. Good. Opened, decanted into a wide-bottomed decanter for maximum aeration. Fine Bordeaux nose, that slightly gravelly, pencilly odour. Left for an hour to open up a bit.

Fine taste, again classic Bordeaux - perhaps lacking some subtlety and nuance, but nonetheless full of quality. Quite strong tannin - enough to give a decent mouth feel, some pucker, not too much to detract from the pleasure, and enough to give the wine at least five more years of good drinking life.

Cantemerle is generally rather cheaper than other classed growths and there is perhaps some justification for that - it's a good, solid and lovely wine but some way off from greatness. Even so, it is underpriced and I feel that makes it a bargain buy.

This particular bottle came from Berry Bros; their notes speak of 'mineral, gravel and iodine.' I see the first two; not so much the last.

I bought this via their online trading system at 25ukp in bond, which works out at 380 a case in my cellar, ie a final price of ukp31.66 a bottle. That strikes me as a fair price for a nice bottle of wine. (5222 views)

- Garnet color and aromas of cedar and vanilla. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of black currant, cherry and dusty with a light/medium body. This deep-to-opaque red/garnet wine has a moderately intense nose of red currants, steeped fig, tobacco and dried herbs. It is medium-bodied on the palate, with medium-to-high acidity, medium sweet tannins and well-integrated alcohol (listed as 13%). The flavors mirror the nose and are accentuated by the wine's acidic backbone. Solid in the middle, it concludes with a medium-length, tart finish. While I suspect that this wine is on plateau, there is no need to rush its consumption. It has plenty of fruit and structure to remain enjoyable for another five years (or more). Drink now-2018. This bottle showed wonderfully, exhibiting the best attributes of a youthful Cabernet and a mature claret. The currant fruits burst forth, but in a refined manner, with complicating notes of dried herbs, minerals and graphite. Very drinkable and enjoyable, but the fine tannins suggest this can still age. Compared it with Cantermere 2006, I like the 2006 better.
I am slightly disappointed with 2000, as its too tannic for my taste.

Decanted 2 hrs then served with a perfect grilled strip steak on the patio during a beautiful 72 degree day. Hard being fair as the steak may have helped carry the wine, though this was much better than my previous bottle a couple of years ago. Med/med+ body with fully ripe dark red fruits and accompanying notes of pencil lead, cigar, gravel, and a bit of Bordoughy funk. Palate is balanced nicely between lush ripeness and austerity. Fully mature but in no danger of falling of the cliff. Excellent claret... 89-90 sounds about right. (5548 views)

I'm all in on this wine. I've had other vintages and not been wowed at all but, this 2000 is the real deal with all of the advantages of the vintage at play. The nose is like that of a 15-20yr old BDX. The palate is velvety and sexy with vibrant raspberry, mineral and spicy flavors. The acid keeps this fresh and boyant. Wonderful complexity. I probably should score this wine even higher but who would think a $35 btl from the relatively generic Haut Medoc appellation could be so cool??? Terrific value here and totally ready to drink!
