Somehow a few more years turned into 12. This 20+ year old cork extracted cleanly show just 3 or 4 millimeters of wine seepage. Appropriate color. The nose is lovely with moderate notes of garrigue, berries, and subtle leather. The palate is smooth and so drinkable. Light fruit remains, soft tannins, and lively acidity make this a joy to drink. Such a nice surprise from a wine that should have been drank 10 years ago. Holding well and based on this bottle should continue for at least a few more years. (1356 views)

Another, and last, of my 2001 Coudoulet de Beaucastel. Again, this is a second label Beaucastel and after the previous tasting, I had visions of pouring another bottle down the drain.
Upon opening, even the cork was saturated so I had a little hope (that is why I learned to place little credence in condition of the cork – they are not always a good indication of the condition of the wine). But to my surprise, it was fantastic! Four+ years ago I said that I should open my remaining bottle quite soon and, indeed, on first sip I felt that it had faded into a shadow of what as a quasi CndP it must have been in its youth. However from the second sip I adjusted to its reduced dimensions and found an absolutely delicious and ethereal wine with sublime cherry tinged mature fruit and complex undertones leading to a long fragrant finish. Bonhams Pre-Sale Tasting (San Francisco): Light, pale red. Funk and earth-alright, old style Beaucastel!! Fairly supple, soil and light retained fruit. Good, although probably at the end of its life span. Makes me want to taste the Beaucastel itself from this vintage. (4917 views)

A delicious bottle of Coudoulet with more charm and elegance than in many vintages. Colour showed some bricking. Nose was very expressive and full of sweet cherry dominated dark fruit. The palate was medium/full bodied with good depth and velvety texture and, like the nose, was full of ripe fruit playing variations on the theme of sweet dark cherry as far as kirsch touches on the decently long finish and there were also smooth acidity, mint and faint liquorice touches. Tannins were well covered but enough to give adequate backbone. I seem to have been luckier than others who complain about loss of fruit but, at first, there were hints of decay which were rapidly obscured as the aromas opened up; so I will open my remaining bottle quite soon. Rhone varietals on a Saturday afternoon (Chesterland): Ruby/brown in color. The nose is nice. Complex with dusty black cherries. Tart but within reason, acidity on the palate. Still nice cherry fruit. Slight heat. At 14, this is certainly on its downward slide but lots of enjoyment here. Some complexity. It would be better with food to tame the acidity. (3395 views)

The nose was sweaty with a hint of band-aid. In the mouth there were nice, firm red fruit flavors that were dry and had weight. There was a tart red finish with lip-smacking orange citrus. With air it became a touch rough in the back of the throat. Though leaner in flavor it took on added complexity from minerals and black fruit. A tart vein continued to run through it. (3370 views)

Pop and Pour. Ruby/purple, clear and bright. The nose is really nice with a bit of warm earth with just the slightest funk on it. Also some cherries and leather. On the palate, there is a nice cherry flavor with lots of complexity. Earthy. No tannins left. This seems to be at peak for me and just a beautiful aged bottle. I have a couple left which I will drink in the next year or so. Nice to age a not too expensive wine and have it show so well. A glass left in the bottle for the next day showed lots of oxidation. Another good bottle. A wine that's still fairly young showing brown fruit and spices. Also, clearly a bit polished and clean lacking a bit of that rugged, wild style Beaucastel produced up to the mid 90s. This has more in the tank, no hurry to drink up at all. (3663 views)

Unmistakeable Beaucastel aromas of barnyard funk, dates, herbs, smoke, and a little cola. Tannins were integrated and lots of food-friendly acidity make it easy to drink. Its profile mirrored that of a mature Beaucastel CdP but without the concentration and depth of the first wine. Ready to drink anytime and preferably with dinner. (4605 views)

Last bottle from a case. Seemed a little shrill as if past its prime when first opened, but really showed well after an hour or so. Great nose of dried herbs and red fruit. A bit lean on the palate, but with good flavor intensity and a nice finish. Survived until day two and if anything got stronger. Finally, a Beaucastel product that is not heat damaged or flawed by brett or VA.

This is great! Sort of exactly what I would expect, a junior Beaucastel. A nod toward Bandol with the Mourvedre, I can taste the Syrah, perfect age. (3709 views)

Color: medium/light ruby -> light garnet/brick rim; lighter than expected. Bouquet was all barnyard gaminess, leather, truffles, mushrooms; delicious. Palate was fuller than expected showing nice dark fruit; I think the mourvedre and syrah really show through in this vintage. Licorice, roasted meat, garrigue all come through in force. While there is impressive structure still, I think the tannins are overtaking the fruit and producing a somewhat short(er than I would like) finish. Definitely still pleasurable to drink now; probably best consumed soon though. Overdelivers for its humble CDR appelation. Then again, it IS from the Perrins. (4660 views)

Really very nice. Still some lovely fruit here, lacks the depth of a Chateauneuf, but the fruit is straightforward and pleasing. Raspberry tea notes with air. Hardly any brett at all in this bottle, unlike the last two bottles earlier this year. The tannin has thinned out considerably, and the wine glides across the palate to a very nice finish. Holding up very well. This bottle may have been in a little bottle shock- it was very cloudy and had quite a bit of sediment. No browning at the edges, but it looked like it had some age. The nose had leather, followed by intense red fruit- strawberry, cranberry, and pomegranate. Very complex. The palate reiterated the red fruit and reminded me of Thanksgiving with the cranberry sauce flavors- sweet fruit and tannin followed by a very tart finish. Some thought it was too sweet. They could be right, but that seemed to be Beaucastel's style in that time period. This was right in my wheelhouse. (3527 views)

Picked up four of these last week from David, having ordered them together about a decade ago. Resolved palate, very smooth, no tannin, still great fruit and lavender. Still has very nice underlying energy, in no way too old. Decanted 1.5 hrs served at 16C. My last bottle of this. Bricking at rim, some find suspended sediment. Generous bouquet of garrigue, bacon, and cedar of all things. Some notes on the bouquet I've not picked up before.

Supple entry, deeply flavoured mid-palate showing kirsch notes, plum, anise and lavender. Long final with great acidity holding up a fine fine grained lattice of tannins. Lots to like here and a great bottle to finish out a set of 12. (5171 views)

A whiff of brett on the nose right after I poured this into a decanter, but it blew off after a short while. A great Coudoulet in the making, however, further cellaring is warranted. Animal fur, leather, tobacco and licorice marks along with somewhat polished, dark and slightly bitter fruit and lavender/thyme. The tannins are biting my gums, they are still marked and edgy. Even though the fruit is polished, this comes across as a Beaucastel of the good old days ie rustic with leather and animal tones. Hold off for another 2-3 years. (6814 views)

Au nez ce sont des arômes de fruits rouges, cuir, feuilles mortes qui ouvrent la voie. Par contre, avec le temps et l'aération, moka, épices et un fruit mieux défini seront de la partie. Un côté animal est bien présent aussi, apportant une certaine profondeur au vin. En bouche c'est plus jeune avec du fruit rouge (cerise et framboise compotée), épices, herbes, cuir, le côté animal percu au nez, le tout sur une belle longueur qui verra avec le temps une certaine astringence s'atténuer et l'acidité présente s'adoucir. Mini Beaucastel Vertical (81-01) with 86 Sauternes (Bethesda, MD): Immediately ascertainable as a second wine. The nose feels a bit more diffuse, lacking strictness in selection and as much focus as the grand vin. Perhaps a bit harsh for a Cotes du Rhone, but the vineyard is practically habitated in chateauneuf for what its worth… It clearly needed to be decanted as it gained composition and structure in the glass. A restrained but nice Coudoulet. I don’t think it will develop the aromatic complexity of the mid 90s Beaus, but it will reach a very nice drinking stage in 3-5 years. A very young Coudoulet that is still years away from its peak. Quite Grenachy nose of red cherry fruit and lavender. Good complex palate of red fruit, garrigue, licorice and black olives. Serious tannic structure, not fully resolved yet. Opens up nicely with air. Rich texture, a full wine. Very good acidity which bodes well for the future. This is a great wine. UPDATE: Showing much better on day two with more bright fruit and distinct lavender and black olive flavors. I do think this is a more polished style of Beaucastel, but its a darn good wine. Dinner at Mom's House: Popped and poured. The color is blackish/red turning watery at the rim. The nose gives black fruit, pepper, garrigue, iron, and smoke. Aromas are not as intense as I would expect (a little blunted). On the palate this has a very smooth texture and good medium weight. Flavors are predominately black fruit and mineral. Meeting the new neighbors (and serving Clos des Papes, Usseglio Mon Aieul, Fonseca and others): Medium ruby with a sligth lightening at the rim. An awesome nose only lacking a little in intensity displays garrigue, animal, tapenade, smoke, and kirsch. On the palate this is nicely balanced with a deep flavor of dark fruit and mineral and a bit of acidity to keep things lively. Still fairly tannic, but drinking great now. This is the best bottle of Coudoulet de Beaucastel that I have ever had (and I have been buying this since the 1995 vintage). (4340 views)

My first bottle of this, I am positively surprised. A nose of leather, smoke cherry and barnyard. At first this comes across as heavily Mourvedre-influenced, with a meatiness, animal/barnyard, and chocolate reminiscent of Bandol. However, with a bit of air, it also picks up much more of a briny, tart aspect with hints of black olive, presumably Syrah. Maintains a hint of brett (or at least funk), but to me that's a good thing. Not much about this wine (except perhaps a sweetness from the fruit) makes me think of Grenache. I don't know the blend, but would guess a good percentage of Syrah and Mourvedre. Rich red cherry fruit, with chocolate & smoke to "darken" the flavor profile a bit. Good acidity gives this a juicy, salivatin' effect, but may be a bit too tart for some....long finish. This one is a winner worth aging for another 5-8 years just to get some extra secondary nuance/complexity. (4315 views)

Served with porcini risotto. Lovely deep garnet in the glass, with a compelling aroma of spice, earth, black tea, and minerals. A nice match for the dish, the wine shows wonderfully sweet fruit packaged around a black pepper and spice laden core. I haven't had this in a while, and I confess that it came across as a bit less full in the mouth than I recall--a bit lacking in the mid-palate and on the finish. My notes are similar to others here. The color on this is brickish in the middle and quite light at the edges. The nose is exactly what you'd expect from a CdR: a little bit of barn, spice, leather, and briary black fruit.
