Like a feather in the air. Light red color with just a hint of bricking. Very Pinot’ish with red strawberry flavors, soft and round, good acidity, tertiary flavors. So light and elegant and a real joy to drink. I suspect it’s the acidity that keeps this going. Wow. (254 views)

“S” Cuvée. Nice nose with a mix of berries, cherries, leather, earth, and citrus zest. The palate is very light and delicate with more cherry notes, new leather, and a savory note that lingers. Graceful and crowd pleasing. Less oomph than a few years ago, but this wine has gained balance and a quiet charm. Rhubarb/raspberry, with mineral notes, a silky palate, and subtle, receding tannins. This wine doesn't taste like it's getting any better. The fullness of Morgon is apparent, but the distinct forest floor and red fruit components are starting to fade. The acid is loosing it's edge and the tannin has nearly completely melted away. Still very pleasant and will continue to enjoy for another year or three. (3954 views)

Thanksgiving Week Wines; 11/22/2012-11/25/2012 (Edison, NJ): Yummy bottle with great raspberry, florals, earth and spice notes. Noticed a small amount of drying tannins on the palate, but overall thought this was drinking very nicely. Worth mentioning that the pure, cool fruit on the palate was framed nicely by its acidity. Popped and poured from 375. Medium ruby, clear rim with subtle bricking. Forward aromatically, the fruit evokes raspberry, stone fruits, and pomegranate aromas which are complimented by complex notes of root vegetables, floral incense, and a touch of briny, provencal herbs (the last element especially reminiscent of a Côtes du Rhône). Medium-light to medium body. The flavors on the palate are much as touched upon by the nose, with spice-laden raspberry notes on the front interspersed by savory elements and complimentary notes of green stem; in fact, the spice, fruit, and green makes this eminently quaffable yet so deceivingly complex. The tannins are nearly resolved on the lingering close.
Simply a delicious example of the Gamay grape, and although lacking the elegance and sublime texture of the justifiably hyped 2009, the 2008 Lapierre isn't terribly far behind it. In fact, if the 2008 is a portend for how the 2009 might develop then with a bit of time anyone holding quantity is in store for quite a treat.
But aside from that and without getting too sidetracked from the bottle at hand, the 2008 is drinking splendidly right now and should continue to do so over the short term or possibly longer if holding in a cold cellar. Just Yummy.

Quick commentary: Don't know what it is about Lapierre...rarely do wines combine complexity, texture, and sheer pleasure so seamlessly. Surely, these wines are not only world class but are also some of the greatest bargains one can find in wine. (4756 views)

Mine is from the S lots, those with sulfur. this is delicious beaujolais, and a return to form, as I had too many off bottles of the 07 and began to lose faith in the wine. with the 08, faith=restored. very aromatic, fresh, balanced, and just delicious. there is dark gamay fruit and some herbs, lots of snappy acidity, and a lovely mineral finish. energetic wine, the good stuff is back. At first this seemed astonishingly simple and one-dimensional. Indeed, right out of the opened bottle I thought this was a dud. Twenty minutes later I could discern the barest hints of something more, and then it was like pulling teeth to get it to come to the fore. This wine (or at least this bottle) demands air. Large amounts of it helped this to open up, spread out, and sweeten. Vigorously carafe this wine is my advice. Slosh it about. Then it shows its fleshy fruit (cherry? strawberry?) and mild spiciness. Closer in style and quality to Lapierre's Vin de Pays des Gauls, yet lacking even that wine's exhuberance and fun. This just arrived at KLWM and what a delight it is. The mesmerizingly complex nose brings a cascade of shape-shifting aromas that seem to cycle from tart red berries, to blood orange, mineral, rust/iron, pine needle, floral violet/lilac, rhubarb and back again. The palate is juicy with bright acidity and gorgeously fresh, mouthwatering blood orange-like fruit and mineral flavors. On first glance, this is lighter and less textural than '05 or '06, almost water-weight in the mouth, with flavors that linger for just a bit. But it adds a bit of flesh and gentle structure with a couple of hours of air, so I suspect a few short months will bring about the more typical Lapierre textural snap. Who cares though, really. The freshness today is to die for and the ripeness just seems perfect. This is one of those wines I feel I can't possibly drink enough of. (Lot N 22/05/09) (3083 views)
