Bright ruby red with the smallest hint of browning at the edges. Immediately smells like raspberry candy and brilliant red fruits which opens to an earthy cedar. Significantly less Bordeaux funk than its bigger sibling but the undertones are there. Palate was initially of cherries and then it closed down for an hour or so. Tannins are fully integrated and well rounded. Emerged to cranberries and cherries with an oak backbone. At its peak but not going anywhere soon. (517 views)

This really used to be such a stunning value for very good Bordeaux, and this bottle perfectly illustrates why. There is no mistaking this for anything but Margaux and it is very worthy of its status as Chateau Margaux's 2nd wine. The alluring nose steals the show. This wine has matured into something very beautiful with both the patina of maturity and the freshness of beautiful fruit. It shows a deep crimson purple colour and a striking scented nose of blackcurrants, dark cherries, violets, dark chocolate and cedar. The palate was intense and very young yet with the complexity of age. There remains a fine persistent line of tannin on the finish that defines this very Margaux wine in its shape and aromatic profile. Similar to the note in February this wine is ready for business after a couple of hours in the decanter. Blackish crimson color, nose of blackberries, cassis, cigar box, jasmine and leather. Almost a masculine and powerful Margaux with immediate pleasure on the palate, very strong black and dark red fruits mid palate, perfect balance, structure beginning to show complexity, and a long bitter mocha finish with tannins fully coated by the powerful fruit. A real delight to drink at this stage but has the stuffing for further evolution over the next 5 to 10 years. Last bottle but I will stock up on this wine. (3121 views)

Having tasted the Grand Vin 2000 at Chateau Margaux a little over 3 years ago, I was looking forward to drinking this stunner of a second wine, having last tasted it 7 years ago. I was not disappointed as the wine has evolved to a complex wine and shed its drying tannins. Beautiful deep crimson color, nose of cigar box, blackberries and cassis and jasmine perfume. On the palate very supple entry, velvets mid palate with an explosion of black and dark red fruits. Superb structure, complexity and balance for this medium to full bodied wine. Finishes long with tannins very subtle and a note of dark cassis and flowers. Definitely stocking up on this one! (2253 views)

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #043: Margaux (By JS): Beautiful, creamy and complex bouquet with dark berries, coffee, toast, sweet spices, licorice and even still some youthful lactic impressions. On the palate the same impressions, chocolate, a firm dose of luxurious oak, firm acidity and round tannin. Needs some more years to show all of its merits. Around 2022 – 2024? A great beauty. Mildly corked that at first we couldn't really detect it. But about 1 hour in, clearly corked! At least at the outset, mild rotten veggie funk (this should have been our hint of something wrong) which actually added interest, tobacco, herbs, leather and a hint of cassis. The palate was reverse with more cassis and dried cherries up front followed by herbs, leather and tobacco. Close your eyes and take a sip of this wine and you would swear you are drinking a wine half its age. It's dark in the glass, a nose of red fruit and a palate the attacks with not only great fruit but a tannic structure that has real chops. And the CT community says this wine has a drink date that ended last year?? Absolutely crazy. 5 years more to go, at a minimum. Perhaps these dates were entered early on. Do NOT decant or let breathe very long. It works!
This probably peaked a year or two ago, which is a fraction of its life, but it was still extremely good- I would drink 2018.
Just a hint of tannins left, the 75% Cab is prominent with nose and taste of bell pepper. They say Margaux is the feminine side of Bordeaux and thus it was with this wine. Elegant, smooth but not timid with fruit still quite apparent. Paired quite well with dinner. Just past peak, but magnificent. My bad for forgetting we still had a Y2000 bottle left.

Bought this "en premiuer" and cellared. First time with this Ch. Margaux 'second wine. At first very plain and muted. After 1 hour in the decanter changed completely. Still at the holiday edge, we were enjoying my daughter's short ribs and mushroom risotto, a perfect match for a Bordeaux. The wine had a purple color with just a hint of brown at the rim. On first opening, it was very acidic and tannic, but after a short time, it developed very good balance and definition. It had a very intense bouquet and flavor of bell pepper, making it instantly recognizable as a Cabernet Sauvignon, and probably an old world wine. It had a long finish. I am not a big fan of wines that are so overtly bell pepper. I much prefer wines where the herbal character is muted and softened (think Leonetti) or has been partly or entirely replaced by fruit, most often cassis (think Screaming Eagle), or by very special flavors, such as lead pencil (think Lafite Rothschild), or become all sweet tobacco, the frequent fate of older wines made with this grape (think Haut Brion as a pinnacle example). The wine seems to have come through Hurricane Katrina unscathed. (4100 views)

When I first opened this bottle, it was flat. There was nothing on the nose nor the palate. I poured it into a wide decanter while we enjoyed our white with cheese. We got to this bottle about an hour later and, while it still was not showing much, with vigorous swirling, some cherry was showing but still not easy to get a read on it. I opened another red to give this Margaux more time, and voila, it came to life. A delicate and elegant wine with plenty of dark cherry fruit and smooth tannins. We did not let this breathe or decant long enough - a 15 year old wine? Should be ready now? Not really, still rather young. The second night - after ADDITIONAL decanting - it opened up and WOW, I thought Margaux was supposed to be silky and elegant, but this was lots of fruit and graphite and more sediment, but the depth and intensity was like nothing we have had before. My goodness, what a difference a year (or two) makes. This is really singing now. Much more open, lovely complex nose of cedar, black currant, plum and soy. The descriptor velvety tannins is made for this. Fine acidity, decent length. Beautiful wine, now into its window. Lacks concentration and length of its big sister but a very fine drop of claret. Perfect bottle. Top fill. Stored at constant 19 degrees celsius for 10 years.
Carmine red, still quite young. A bit of sediment.
Lots of red fruit, but also lots of oak. It is too early to open this bottle.
A hint of chocolate, coffee and herbs. But the red fruit and oak is dominant here.
I tried this wine over 20 h and it needs to be decanted several hours. For me it is at its best after + 16h. I have the top of the decanter sealed.
Lovely acidity, but the tannins are to tough and robust at this moment. There is no balance for now, but I'm sure this wine will come around within 10 years. It is not a Grand Vin and it is far from Ch Margaux 2000, but I bet this will be a lovely wine between 2024 - 2040.
Quite short finish, but after the tannins "disappear" there is a nice taste of wild strawberries and cherries left for a while.
I must say I expected a little bit more.

There was some mild-to-moderate sediment toward the end of the bottle. The nose of this wine is its best feature, carrying scents of forest, cedar trunks, cherry, and a bit of rock. In the mouth, this is tart, with nice structure and acid, but not a lot of fruit. The tannin seems to have integrated fine and was not noticeable. There is also a slightly horsey/barnyard sensation in the mouth and through the finish, which doesn't fit well with the overall package – not sure if that was an issue with this particular bottle. Overall, this feels and tastes older than a 13-year Bordeaux from a very good vintage; the wine seems on the downward incline. Chateau Margaux and Pavillon Rouge has been one of my "house wines" many years. Well, that is coming to an end in the next generation with current First Growth prices... times change. The Pavillon Rouge 2000 has been closed for a long time, yielding very little when you opened it. I was therefore pleased to see tonight that is is now fully ready to drink and an excellent example of the Pavillon Rouge. You must know that Chateau Margaux, even the Grand Vin, is always a delicate wine. If Harlan & Co. is your style of Cab, no need to apply here.
The the Pavillon Rouge 2000 displays the nose of a typical Chateau Margaux wine with red current, toast, cedar wood and earth, all very delicate. There is noticeable acidity too, a Ballerina. The main difference to the Grand Vin is the more modest mid palate.
BTW, I noticed tonight, as many time before, that wen you have a delicate and a block buster wine open on the table at the same time, the more delicate, drinkable wine is always gone first and the block buster stays half full, just too heavy to go with food. So if you have some bottles of Pavillon Rouge 2000 in your cellar and bought them en primeur for 60$ back then I propose to consume them now with food and dwell in the past what a pleasure Bordeaux was before the Chinese woke up from the Mao Tse Tung nightmare. This is a good wine. I think it has reached its peak, but it does have quite a few years life left, because it is a well made wine. What is becoming very clear now is that the way the wine has been kept over the years is vital. The other important point is serving. We had 3 bottles. They had all been kept the same in the same temperature/humidity good place. One bottle the level had dropped a little but the others were right up the neck. That bottle was not as good as the other too, but still good. Serving: the third was the best: decant and pour within 5 minutes, the wine was that much more rounded.
Anyway the wine looks Garnet colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Blackberry, Black currant (cassis), and Red Currant. It tastes like Blackberry, Red Currant, Raspberry, and Black currant (cassis). The body is Medium/Full. The wine has Smooth texture. The wine finishes Medium. (5511 views)

Wow best bottle over past few years, surprising progress overn4 years. Deep crimson color with black core, slight aging at the rims, this full bodied beauty opens up with a nose of leather, lots of tobacco and earth, with some black currant and dark red berries. After an hour or so in the decanter, the nose shows much more fruit, scorched earth and tobacco. Excellent entry on thebpalate, this wine exudes class and finesse reminiscent of it's big brother, coats the mid palate, and a very long satisfying finish, great acidity and backbone, with tannins present but not a single hard edge. This seems like a Bordeaux that is at a stage I like - showing solid fruit, yet brining nice secondary flavors and aromas. My first wine from Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux.....gorgeous red berry fruit(raspberry/plum), some dark raisined cherry, fresh earth, dusty floral dried tobacco leaf, smoked cherry wood plank. Still quite tannic, but smooth. Should do well for the next 15 years. (8923 views)

well made second label. Still young. Nose of fresh cut flowers, creamy cherry kool-ade, sour cranberries, wetstones, and a slight hint of matchstick. The palate fattend up after time in the decantor, although it started out thin. The finsih was long and spicey. This is still a young lively wine that will improve with a few more years in the bottle. For the release price it was a steal. At today's price its a toss up. (8612 views)

Absolutely stunning!
The bottle needed a good hour or so in the decanter to start revealing all its charms... Another hour in the glass only made it evolve even more... Such refinement and elegeance is very hard to find outside of Bordeaux... A timeless effort, so sophisticated and complex. Great, great wine. Start drinking now, but will last for a long time. Actually, had 1982 Pavillon rouge earlier this year and it was still drinking beautifully fresh... Wish I had more of this... (9250 views)

Opened and served immediately. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of potpourri, black licorice, black berries and black cherries. Flavors of black berries, plums and cherries. Day one was not very good; barnyard on the nose, acidic and thin on the palate with a medium finish and hollow mid-palate.
Cork looked great and its not cooked so I shelved it for day 2.
Day two was better for sure but still not very impressive. Heavy herbal notes with some crushed stone and leather but still a bit thin overall.
I will hold the rest for day three and report back if it improves. If I had more I would wait a few years in the hope that I just caught it in a bad phase.
However, this and the 03 I had recently were both very disappointing overall. (9350 views)

Paid SGD 200 for this bottle. A bit steep for a second wine one would have thought but absolutely no regrets. Had it last Christmas at my house during a BBQ. The flight was as follows: 02 La Dame de Montrose, 94 Gruaud Larose, 00 Pavillon Rouge and 00 Brunello di Montalcino Castel Giocondo. Was with TK, Piao, Wendy, Pat and Debs. Thoroughly enjoyable night.. Had food and good wines with candle light. The pavillon rouge was astoundingly good. Stunning complex nose with an equally beautiful floral taste on the palate. "Frangipani" I kept thinking and they did not even grow these trees in Bordeaux. "How did they do it??" Actually quite hesitant to try another bottle as I am concerned it may not quite reach the previous heights and I did not want my perfect memories to be shattered. It was a great wine to be had that night but more importantly, the company was excellent. (7360 views)
