Community Tasting Notes (average 90.2 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 99 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mtnbarry on 5/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Not sure a better QPR exists. Incredible complexity with ripe plums, stewed tomatoes, olives, eucalyptus and myriad herbs and spices with a nice beam of acid and tannin still present. Ridiculously peppery, spicy and gamey nose - what fun! (333 views)
Tasted by Darkhorn on 2/21/2021 & rated 92 points: Been 8 years since my last review. I'm amazed how well this has aged.. excellent, well balanced. Wish i had more. (1266 views)
Tasted by bg3034 on 6/10/2020 & rated 88 points: Pnp through Nuance. Plum color. Dark fruit, faint cherry, a little spice on the nose. On the palate, blackberries, a little grit and burn. 88pts. Aloha! (1484 views)
Tasted by empire80 on 5/6/2020 & rated 88 points: Hmmm, I think this has gone backwards since my last bottle. Quite a lot of alcoholic heat on its own, but calms down in the presence of a hearty stew. (1502 views)
Tasted by mdvino63 on 2/24/2020 & rated 86 points: For me, this is too ripe and alcoholic, though it is not super heavy. It has very nice flavor and, if you are into the newer-style CDP (Parkerized, 2007 style) you will love this, at it is similar but with more pure fruit and not quite as heavy. (1640 views)
Tasted by king-bing on 10/12/2019: 12/12. Disappointing: not that interesting, heavy and notably alcoholic (15%abv). A shame as it s a producer I have enjoyed in the past. I don't recall being wild about any of the case in their evolution in recent years. (1500 views)
Tasted by TheBosWineGuy on 1/1/2019 & rated 90 points: Retains some good sourness, with just a touch of astringency remaining. Lovely with some appetizers of burrata, meats, and mushroom crostini. Terrific value. (1186 views)
Tasted by Puteljen! on 11/25/2018 & rated 89 points: Lots of upfront fruit, mostly darker stuff like blackberries and boysenberries but also some cherries. Lots of power but still fairly fresh even if there is some warmth from the vintage. Some herbs as well - bay leaf, thyme, rosemary - growing on a sun baked slope. Light fivespice and hints of bitter chocolate. Medium lenght. Good stuff, but I like the ’10 better. (1233 views)
Tasted by Omar Khayyam on 5/10/2018 & rated 87 points: Deep dark fruit, licorice, spice, laurels, bitter chocolate, saddle leather oil. No oak on this 50/50 Grenache/Syrah blend. Good freshness but quite the body. Really good but should be paired with heavy food to shine. (1683 views)
Tasted by dalondra on 4/8/2018 & rated 90 points: Mature herby wine, but fades after an hour or so. (1485 views)
Tasted by king-bing on 3/16/2018: Lovely on opening. Rich, herby and warm. Ideal for a winter night and stew. Heady at 15% abv. Closed down a little after 30 mins or so. (1442 views)
Tasted by empire80 on 10/20/2017 & rated 90 points: This is now nicely balanced and drinking well, glad I left most of my bottles. (1343 views)
Tasted by mtnbarry on 6/17/2017 & rated 89 points: Drinking well now. Sharp cracked black pepper on the nose w cigar box undertones, dark color and full bodied. Syrah flavors seem to overwhelm the grenache as the gamey, peppery, earthen notes dominate the wine. Syrupy black cherry, plum and fig flavors mingle with tobacco, curry and anise with grippy tannins still. Benefits from a good decant. Drink now through 2022. (1702 views)
Tasted by WAndK on 6/3/2017 & rated 92 points: Djupröd färg, kraftig fällning. Tydlig doft av charkuterier, mörka bär och stall. Kraftiga, men även balanserade tannkner. Lång häftig eftersmak. Verkligen dags att konsumeras. Gott!! (1326 views)
Tasted by MCrawford on 1/22/2016 & rated 90 points: Hefty, solid with firm tannins. Full body and finish. Black fruits integrated with some unique characteristics. This didn't not pair well with the beef roast we had, I would say, more of "cheese and cracker" wine. Meant to be enjoyed on its own merits. (2842 views)
Tasted by patsox on 3/25/2015 & rated 91 points: Impressive! (4066 views)
Tasted by empire80 on 2/19/2015 & rated 89 points: This is shaping up well, but still too young for me. Cherries, violets, and plenty of peppery tannin. Better with food. (3708 views)
Tasted by Chasse_spleen on 1/3/2015 & rated 90 points: Very good, mussel-like briny nose, complemented by deep Rhône complexity. Long taste, ready to drink. (3582 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 9/18/2014 & rated 89 points: A nose of dark fruit and spices, dark garnet in color. A medium to full bodied red blend, with blackberry, cassis, herbs, spice and smoke on finish, a good blend. www.winelx.com (4341 views)
Tasted by mr21cbs on 7/20/2014 & rated 91 points: Solid wine (3343 views)
Tasted by pkatz on 6/14/2014 & rated 91 points: Although the blend is 50-50, Syrah flavors predominate over Grenache. Tasty and drinking well now, but likely go longer. Extremely well-integrated. Alcohol comments reflect what's on the label, rather than what's in the bottle. (2801 views)
Tasted by empire80 on 4/25/2014 & rated 87 points: Some black cherry and violets, but dominated by strong dry tannin and alcoholic heat. I think this is a couple of years too young for me, but seems likely to improve a few points with age. (2524 views)
Tasted by BrunelloBob on 3/28/2014 & rated 89 points: Cork bled 90% through all around, which is concerning...
Black tea, black fruit, a hint of black licorice. I'm no authority, but you could have convinced me this was a reasonably priceed CdP. Nice balance, drink now. (3083 views)
Tasted by olalar on 3/17/2014 & rated 87 points: Overall consistent with previous notes but the alcohol was noticable and reduces the enthusiasm. (2023 views)
Tasted by MichaelY on 3/3/2014 & rated 90 points: Very interesting bottle. It showed most of the flavors like his elder brother Montirius Confidentiel but without the sweetness. I finished the bottle after three hours but you can still sense that the bottle is still evolving.

My bottle has lots of sediment which didn't affect the quality but instead gave me a feeling of old vintage. (1900 views)

Montirius

Producer website

"Montirius has been a family estate for 5 generations. The slow conversion process from traditional to bio-dynamic vineyard management and wine making of the 133 acres owned by the family was started by Eric Saurel’s father Max in 1980. The estate was fully converted in 1996 and in 1999 Montirius became the first winery in the Vacqueyras & Gigondas appellations to be certified Bio-Dynamic. The estate is certified organic by Ecocert and Bio-Dynamic by Biodyvin."

2009 Montirius Vacqueyras Le Clos

50% Grenache, 50% Syrah.

Data Sheet

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
