Jersey Boys (Grand Sichuan, Jersey City, NJ): Dark dark dark. Soft and creamy - coffee and sweet. So dark intense. But low acid. This was hard after the Catoir where the acid was so banging. Lots of complexity but it was so sweet that it felt cloying and heavy to me. (178 views)

PnP. I have a hard time telling if Lopez whites are corked when poured or just funky but air usually resolves it. Nutty nutty nutty and funky. Florals along with a sharp and almost piquant kumquat skin. Walnuts. Saline. The palate is also very nutty and salty. Great grip with fruit skin and walnuts. Super tart citrus. Finish is citrus at first moving to nuttiness with bright acid and awesome grip. Wonderful. This was even funkier on day 2 when poured and needed a lot of time to work itself out. Give this lots of air and time. Nose: 5/6, Palate: 5.5/6, Finish: 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi: 1.5/2 = 17.5/20. (3165 views)

Nose of berries & tart, spice. For me this took a few hours to really open. Smokey red berries and some minerals. Spices. Palate has super high acid and red berries and spice, Tart and long brutal finish. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16-16.5/20. (1790 views)

First Tondonia Blanco in a long time and I have to ask myself “why?” Nose of green apples, wax, pollen, minerals, honeysuckle, quince or kumquats or something. Palate is high acid with some fullness , minerals, tart green apple, this really surges into the finish which is exceptional with tart green apple and some other tart fruit, florals and minerals. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16.5/20.

Day 21: this is better now than it was on day 1. Not a shock really given the oxidative style. Nutty and salty with pollen and florals. Green apple. Really perfumed with great acid and grip. (3078 views)

By the glass at The Queen’s English in DC. Very bright and austere with powerful mineral and saline notes. Some green grass and a bit of sharp tart citrus. Did the job but I’d still rather have a dry Riesling or even better a Feinherb. (478 views)

Day 1: This was pretty rough when poured but it’s knitted together well with air. Painfully young, the nose shows very dark plummy fruit, a dollop of new American oak. The palate is dark fruited as well but lighter in body with lots of acid and an earthy, dusty element to it. The latter carries over into the tart finish. Lots of good stuff here but this needs like 20 years. (12643 views)

Took a bottle to La Vara to celebrate my birthday. I'm almost always amazed how Burgundian this wine is and how much flavor is packed into this without being heavy. Classic notes of cherry, wild strawberry, plum, sous bois, tomato-meaty, funk. This is really perfumed and sexy with some serious sauvage. I found the palate to be a bit more acidic than the nose - maybe a touch dried out. But the wine wasn't a great match with most of the food so that could be it as well. Still beautiful fruit flavors, funk, some meat. This is classic Rioja and they don't make 'em like they used to. (2414 views)
