2018 Pierre Gonon Chasselas (France, Rhône, Vin de France) 2/23/2023Xavier Auerbach91

Ultra-rare, only 0.1 hectare, vines planted in 1890 on Gneiss in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols as table grapes. The vines were previously tended by local legend Raymond Trollat, who sold his vineyards to the Gonon brothers in 2005. Organic viticulture, aged in older wood on the fine lees for 11 months with regular bâtonnage. Good weight and body in spite of its light alcoholic weight (11.5% ABV), spicy honeysuckle, peach, dried pineapple, jasmin blossom, silky texture, mild bitters, minerally depth, soft but fresh acidity provides a certain elegance on the finish. 2014 Louis Bovard Ilex Calamin Grand Cru (Switzerland, Vaud, Lavaux, Calamin Grand Cru) 3/10/2016Xavier Auerbach90

Calamin is a 16ha Grand Cru on the northern shore of Lac Leman. The terraced vineyards are have clayey soils and are planted to Chasselas. Ilex was aged on the fine lees in barrique for 11 months and did not undergo malolactic fermentation. Pale white gold with a green tinge; lovely bouquet, with an attractive interplay of minerals, herbs, ripe yellow fruit and a hint of spicy oak; the palate displays the freshness (TA is 5.5gr/l) and elegance for which Calamin is renowned, relatively light weight but the fruit is ripe; on the finish the oak sticks out a bit, but this will improve with a further 1-2 years in bottle. Lovely wine, should last up to a decade. (870 views)

Remarkably deep colour, greenish gold; rather neutral, simple nose, with slightly raw acidity, a hint of fruit and a saline quality; quite a full and rounded palate, frank and juicy, slightly edgy acidity, grapy, salty, relatively neutral; decent length. Light - too light. Nice Chasselas typicity but lacks weight of fruit and oomph, refreshing but otherwise little to it. There is a certain subtlety but on the whole this is not really convincing, particularly in view of a CHF 24.90 price tag (tax-free at Zürich Airport). I agree with Spillwine's previous note however: would be perfect with cheese fondue. (2777 views)
