1986 Château Magdelaine (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru) 4/28/2024jviz91

Appears to be a bottle with a good cork. Served with lamb and the pairing made the wine better than it would’ve otherwise been. Transparent, well bricked with notes of baked red fruit. Quite rustic, a bit of barnyard (not Brett). A little to the sour side, so not the most charming version of Magdelaine, but always a pleasure to taste. (123 views)

1996 Château L'Evangile (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol) 4/15/2024jviz93

This developed nicely over 2-3 hours. Decanting might speed it along, and the wine held up well during that time. Bricked, with red clay and tobacco leaf, somewhat angular but still with ample fruit. I don't see it improving further but it was more than enjoyable. (256 views)

1986 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 4/12/2024jviz94

When it’s on, it’s on. I’ve only had the 89 (and a damaged 88) in the past, but this bottle was reconditioned at the chateau in 11 and to me shows more 86’ character than any other I’ve had from the vintage. Searing tannins slam the gate on an otherwise generous wine! This particular bottle was impressively fresh, and blind guesses centered in 98-01. Partly this owed to the color showing surprisingly youthful. It was also especially red fruited and bricked. More than a little educational. (693 views)

2016 Realm Cellars The Falstaff (USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford) 4/6/2024jviz95

This was really excellent, and in my opinion, a lovely point in its drinking window. Totally open and aromatic, with a prominent cinnamon stick note. Red fruited, with dusty cocoa coating the finish. Really delicious. It actually has quite of bit of runway ahead, but very much in balance today (625 views)

1998 Château Angélus (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru) 2/4/2024jviz95

This benefited from being open next to a bunch of burgundies, young and old. It is a testament to the greatness and quality of the 98 vintage on the right bank. This was coiled and composed, still surprisingly primary, but there were hints of leather and tobacco in a background of blackberry fruit. Angelus is the Mouton of the right side IMO, as its appeal comes from its concentration of fruit and power, rather than savory nuance. (1273 views)

2014 Vieux Château Certan (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol) 1/30/2024jviz95

A really amazing bottle that performed well from the pop. I decanted for about 3 hours before pouring this at a broad 2014 tasting (but no other bordeaux, oddly).

Violet florals, blue and purple fruits, medium plus weight on the palate. This is both expressive and classic/sturdy at the same time. Beautiful depth with a velvety texture and some savory underpinning, maybe a hint of pyrazine that had folks clued in to Pomerol. I was really impressed with it. (3185 views)

2001 Château Palmer (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux) 1/24/2024jviz

Paired with a beef short rib with demi. This was expressive, with some pen ink and volatility, along with tobacco leaf. Entering its zone, but by no means the most opulent vintage of Palmer. (963 views)

1989 Domaine de Chevalier (France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan) 1/20/2024jviz93

Showing nicely and held together into the second day in the bottle. This shows warm, red bricked notes with sun kissed fruit. Therefore emblematic of the vintage, but I would’ve perhaps, leaned toward the right bank, suspecting a higher percentage of CF and perhaps Merlot. It has held together beautifully, remains in balance, and a lovely wine to have with some steaks.Maybe a little musty on the pop, but that seemed to blow off in this case (614 views)

2021 Realm Cellars The Tempest (USA, California, Napa Valley) 12/16/2023jviz94

I was deeply impressed with this wine. For one thing, it’s a remarkably good vintage of the tempest. For another, it’s absolutely ready to drink now on release. Nose is fresh and open, with lots of potpourri and redcurrant. It’s in the dark fruited category without a hint of roasted character. Balanced acidity and texturally polished skin tannins without any discernible oak overtones or green wood. Delicious and impressive bottle and I see no reason to hold it. Pop one and let me know. 2003 Château Léoville Poyferré (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 12/11/2023jviz91

A less fresh bottle than the last one I think. This one came off a little muddled and cloudy. Still no roasted notes but I’m less impressed than last time around 2.5 years ago. (2479 views)

2003 Château Pontet-Canet (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac) 12/11/2023jviz92

Same bottle as Nutty08. Really fresh sample. Dark fruited, but bright and without any roasted notes. A compelling case for 03. (2835 views)

2007 Dominus Estate (USA, California, Napa Valley) 12/3/2023jviz95

The real surprising thing here is that this was served next to the acclaimed 2013, and this wine was at least its equal, if not better. The integration and candied red fruit made this wine just pop from the glass. Charming and intense on the palate. Dont sleep on 07 Dominus. (2426 views)

2013 Dominus Estate (USA, California, Napa Valley) 12/3/2023jviz95

Suffered none of the roasted notes that are all too common in 2013. It is deep and dense, but polished and not impenetrable even now. Some silky ripened blackcurrant and tar. I’m still holding but a treat to get to peek. (3179 views)

1990 Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru) (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 12/3/2023jviz92

From magnum. Just a delightfully, well aged, right down the fairway, red to dark fruited claret. It’s resolved, plenty of tertiary development, and in my opinion, ready to drink (583 views)
