2020 Goodfellow Family Cellars Blanc Whistling Ridge Vineyard (USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge) 2/17/2024Seth Rosenberg88

Day 2: light yellow color. Nose shows golden and minerals with peach pit, apple skins, slate and stones with a significant salty note. This has matured quickly and lost most of its youthful exuberance that I loved so much. Palate shows that pretty combination of the peach pits with some apple skin and lots of stony minerality that carry into the finish - lots of apple skin and minerals on the finish but it’s a little diffuse and bitter. I’ll know to drink these within the first 6-12 months or so to catch them young. Nose - 4.5-5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14-14.5/20. (668 views)

2012 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Reserva Viña Tondonia (Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja) 11/9/2023Seth Rosenberg95

PnP. I have a hard time telling if Lopez whites are corked when poured or just funky but air usually resolves it. Nutty nutty nutty and funky. Florals along with a sharp and almost piquant kumquat skin. Walnuts. Saline. The palate is also very nutty and salty. Great grip with fruit skin and walnuts. Super tart citrus. Finish is citrus at first moving to nuttiness with bright acid and awesome grip. Wonderful. This was even funkier on day 2 when poured and needed a lot of time to work itself out. Give this lots of air and time. Nose: 5/6, Palate: 5.5/6, Finish: 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi: 1.5/2 = 17.5/20. (3139 views)

2011 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Reserva Viña Tondonia (Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja) 5/6/2023Seth Rosenberg93

First Tondonia Blanco in a long time and I have to ask myself “why?” Nose of green apples, wax, pollen, minerals, honeysuckle, quince or kumquats or something. Palate is high acid with some fullness , minerals, tart green apple, this really surges into the finish which is exceptional with tart green apple and some other tart fruit, florals and minerals. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16.5/20.

Day 21: this is better now than it was on day 1. Not a shock really given the oxidative style. Nutty and salty with pollen and florals. Green apple. Really perfumed with great acid and grip. (3076 views)

2020 Goodfellow Family Cellars Blanc Whistling Ridge Vineyard (USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge) 10/29/2021Seth Rosenberg91

Got my Fall Goodfellow shipment yesterday and had to crack one of these today. This is just lovely. For me the nose is the best - potent and mouth-watering aromas of peach, red and green apple, a little banana and tropicals, brown and baking spices, lime, minerals. The palate shows more tart with lime and minerals and spices up front - very juicy and also somewhat steely. The other fruits are more in the background. I tend to like wines like this more in the feinherb style, and I do wonder how it would be with 10 g/l more RS, but this is really wonderful for what it is. You know how sometimes you anticipate what a wine will be like and it's just what you were hoping for? That's what this is. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 15.5/20. (1480 views)

2010 Chateau Musar Blanc (Lebanon, Bekaa Valley) 6/11/2021Seth Rosenberg90

Day 2. From a small bottle. Nose of marzipan (saw someone say 'coconut' - that seems good too), cream soda, cool herbs or something, pollen and florals. Palate has good structure - grippy acid, a bit austere - pollen, nutty, salty tight finish with a hint of coconut. This probably needs 10 more years to relax but has interesting material. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5+/6, Finish - 4.5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1+/2 = 15+/20 (with 15.5-16.5/20 potential.) (2150 views)

N.V. Old Westminster Winery Skin Contact Piquette (USA, Maryland, Central Piedmont, Linganore) 7/22/2020Seth Rosenberg88

From a 12oz can. Drank as part of a zoom tasting with my dad and winemaker Drew Baker. Nose has a bit of natural wine smell (I call it a fuzziness or blurriness and yeasty), also some grapefruit, wax, waxy, a bit of peach. lots of acid. more yeast - funky. A touch of peach or strawberry. Palate is high acid and crisp and lively. Some yeast and fuzzy. Finish is tart and crisp with some taut fruit wound up and a hint of yeast. This does remind me a bit of Enderle & Moll's whites (Weiss & Grau for example) but that just may be because of how I react to skin contact natural whites. Certainly very fresh and juicy and good for casual drinking-ish. Nose - 4/6, Palate - 4-4.5/6, Finish - 4.5-5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 13.5-14.5/20. (573 views)

N.V. Barbeito Madeira VB Reserva Lote 2 (Portugal, Madeira)12/5/2018Seth Rosenberg92

Couldn't wait. Very nutty and bright. Smells cloudy. Not super complex on the nose but hey, I just opened it. Some wood, sherry ox notes, some acid, a bit of brulee. Very nice on the palate - very lively with a excellent balance of sweetness and acid/bite. This shows some light brown sugar notes, along with the nuts and a citrus kiss from the acid. The finish is really grippy with wonderful acid - the citrus really comes out a lemon zest and combines well with the nuts and wood. Lovely and it may get even better. Nose - 4.5+?/6, Palate - 5+?/6, Finish - 5+?/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16+?/20. (1311 views)

This had lots of time in the glass. Fresh with good energy. Nutty lemon. ox. Palate shows nutty ox some bruised fruit. Bit of paraffin. Dry salty. Finish. Lemon. Minerals. Lots of power. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 16.5/20. (3270 views)

Much more complex on nose. Nice herbal and lemon peel. Moved on without a complete note - probably a 14.5-15/20. (1019 views)

2014 Enderle & Moll Weiss & Grau (Germany, Baden) 5/29/2016Seth Rosenberg89

Wonderful nose of juicy fresh fruits. Matt says watermelon and strawberries, but there is something more citrusy as well: like papaya lemonade or passion fruit or grapefruit. Whatever it is it really gets the salivary glands going. The palate is completely different and not what I am used to, but maybe what the wine style goes for - it is very gentle with subtle flavors on very low volume. One might say 'watery' if one wanted to paint it in a negative light - it's not really like the palate of most wines - but it is refreshing. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14.5/20. (1158 views)

1970 R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia (Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja) 12/9/2014Seth Rosenberg90

I was the outlier on this one, but to me, the nose smelled like one of those Swiss herb-infused alcohols: mountain herbs and grass, crisp, clean ... then some tropical fruits and marzipan? Very elegant on the palate, but the finish was a little odd. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20. (3503 views)

2009 Campogrande Cinque Terre (Italy, Liguria, Cinque Terre) 10/16/2013Seth Rosenberg

Yellow. Really odd nose - old world obscure and bizarre: dry, nutty, marzipan and minerals, banana. Light salty and nutty on the palate - good balance and acid, but this is weird stuff and I can't say I really care for it. (1710 views)

2009 Quinta da Muradella Monterrei Muradella Blanco (Spain, Galicia, Monterrei) 11/25/2013Seth Rosenberg90

Tasted double blind. Nose of apples, gentle apple brandy, salt, sea spray. Very different from most wines I've had. Spicy and interesting on the palate: nutty, salty, slippery with some roundness. Apple pear. Reminds me a bit of the Lopez whites, but it's not as profound. I guessed Spain. From 100 year-old vines, says Sam. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20. (1346 views)
