2000 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru) 1/26/2011Dbrane89

Dark, cloudy with slight brownish rim. Classic Mazis animale, earthy profile. However this is rather let down by the unyielding palate which had some stemmy notes. No Grand Cru weight either. Disappointing.
On the 2nd day I could not recognize this wine at all. It was like an ugly duckling becoming a swan! Extremely perfumed nose with meaty and savory overtones. Sweet candied cherries on the palate which culminates in a lengthy persistent finish. Layers and layers of complexity. Even the weight has reached Grand Cru level. Simply mind-blowing! (3563 views)

1986 Azienda Agricola Guido Padeletti Brunello di Montalcino (Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino) 1/25/2011Dbrane83

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Probably on the way down now. Color was clearly aged. Nose was a dead ringer for a southern Rhone with the distinctive funky barnyard nose. Palate was sweet, light bodied but with a herbal bitterness at the end. Good experience but not a particularly delicious wine. Drink up. (3440 views)

1983 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac) 1/25/2011Dbrane85

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Tasted mostly of Cab Sauv with some spice. Very decent concentration and stuffing despite the age. Drinking at its peak now with the tannins mostly resolved. However, this was rather anonymous in the context of the Bordeauxs tonight. (9806 views)

1993 Château Pajzos Tokaji Esszencia (Hungary, Tokaji) 1/25/2011Dbrane90

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Am a little bit underwhelmed by this wine as both my experience and expectation of Esszencia is so much more than what this wine has to offer right now. However, that takes away nothing from this wine as it's merely too primary at the moment. Figs, honey, super ripe apricots dominate the ultra viscous palate. Serve this well-chilled. (12009 views)

1989 Château Climens (France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac) 1/25/2011Dbrane89

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Bright golden. Plenty of dried preserved plums on the nose on first whiff. Thought this was quite Tokaji-like though after a while the hint of Sauternes flabbiness start to be more prominent. Nonetheless one of the better Sauternes I've had and not showing its age yet. 1988 Château La Mission Haut-Brion (France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan) 1/25/2011Dbrane89

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Bright, fresh, coffee, great length. Very classic but perhaps lack a bit of balance on the stuffing. A wine of modesty as nothing is over the top here. (7955 views)

1998 Château Trotanoy (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol) 1/25/2011Dbrane92

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Distinctively right bank. Great intensity. Bursting with young fruit. Very balanced. Not a light-bodied wine but this had tonnes of grace and class. This is not a wine made by a farmer, but rather an aristocrat. An outstanding Bordeaux. (8705 views)

1997 Château Haut-Brion (France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan) 1/25/2011Dbrane89

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Surprisingly for a Haut Brion, I thought this had quite a high percentage of Cab Sauv. After a brief decanting, this was actually quite charming now in a classic claret way. If I had to be picky, I would say it was a bit flabby. Don't see much upside potential from here so probably drink this up over the near to medium term. (7980 views)

2001 Château Léoville Barton (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 1/25/2011Dbrane88

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Perfumed on the nose. Quite a full-bodied wine. Young but quite approachable now in a classic smooth St. Julien way. Not excessively fruit-driven or overripe. Balanced and delicious now. (11009 views)

1975 Château Mouton Rothschild (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac) 1/25/2011Dbrane87

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Bricking and quite translucent. Still rather fresh despite its age. However, most of the fruit was clearly gone leaving a rather lean wine with persistent acids and tannins. Would have been outstanding 5 years ago. (12729 views)

2003 Domaine Bruno Clair Chambertin-Clos de Bèze (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru) 1/25/2011Dbrane84

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Quite translucent and from the color, impossible to guess a 2003 (there was even some sediment). Even from the palate no one could believe it bore any hallmarks of the hot vintage. Serious wine with good clarity at the moment and no alcoholic heat at all. Very classic interpretation of a Burgundy but seems a bit anonymous for a relatively young Bèze. I think this might actually improve with further age and my current rating might be too conservative. 1996 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru) 1/25/2011Dbrane87

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Golden. Weighty (as per a Grand Cru) but somehow the minerality did not shine through as much as I expect from a Corton-Charlemagne. Very fresh and no signs of oxidation though. Oak was practically invisible but I could mostly taste lemons on the palate and nothing much of anything else. Great linearity but could do with more presence. (5951 views)

N.V. Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut Rosé (France, Champagne) 1/25/2011Dbrane87

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Pinkish. Yeasty on the nose but I don't get much fruit both on the nose and palate. Rather lean and austere. Not showing very well today though the persistence was pretty amazing. My score gives this the benefit of the doubt that this will transform into a swan with some age as this is really a technically perfect wine. (6932 views)

2009 Maison Roche de Bellene Clos de la Roche (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru) 1/25/2011Dbrane90

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Tasted about 12 hours after first popped. The high toned red berry nose leads to a pure and elegant palate. Lighter and less extracted than most 2009s but still juicy. Couldn't pinpoint the village so must be a Morey. I like the sense of completeness here but perhaps lacks a bit of distinctiveness of the terroir. But still this has the stuffing to develop for much longer. (7074 views)

2009 Maison Roche de Bellene Bonnes Mares (France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru) 1/25/2011Dbrane91

Simple Series Dinner 2 (Huat Kee): Tasted about 12 hours after first popped. Bright purple. In the spirit of many 2009s, this wine was literally a liquorish essence of Bonnes Mares. Black, red fruits and some stems dominate the entirely full-bodied palate which was lush and sappy and filled to the brim with dry extract. No pronounced acidity here yet still manages to maintain a certain degree of balance. A very showy and flamboyant wine, a perfect example of the vintage. (5700 views)
