2000 Château Talbot (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien) 3/31/2011Goldstone92

Hastily decantd after we opened it by mistake over Thursday evening simple grilled lamb cops at home. Totally dense, opaque blackish crimson colour with still a telltale trace of purple youth. Nose is reticent but enticing. haughty but pitch-perfect high notes of cedar, blackcurrant, cassis and cinnamon stick. Palate is immediately deep, chewy and unctuous with a lovely restrained but very pure and powerful balance of sharp black fruits....a bit green and young, and with still rich new French oak and firm but pliable tannin that makes the whole wine stand to attention like the Guards at Buckingham Palace. This has a lovely rich velvety quality which is only just starting to emerge. With an hour after decanting the plushness of fruit starts to catch up and balance with the initially predominating green capsicum and tannin. Impressive length and reverberance in the head....the finish just rolls on and on. Wow....sharp Cheddar cheese tones all the rough edges down and suggests what it might become. There is a plushness about it that will appeal to both New World and Old World lovers at the moment. Still a work in progress but looking on track to be truly special. (12117 views)

2007 Marc Colin et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet Les Encégnières (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet) 3/31/2011Goldstone89

Bright....light golden straw colour. Nose is immediate Dan Ta (Hong Kong Chinese egg tarts), hint of Fairy Liquid, followed by lots of flint and some lime zest. Palate is refreshingly sharp red apples acidity, gunflint, oyster shells, excellent minerality and impressive refreshing length with a very flinty and enjoyable finish. Impressive and very enjoyable. 1999 Château d'Armailhac (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac) 3/29/2011Goldstone90

Decanted and then drank over 2 hours. Deep red translucent colour. Welcoming nose of classic Pauillac cedar and pencil lead with a touch of cigar box and some damp earth....all very clean. The palate has an abundance of pure blackcurrant fruit with some redcurrants and tobacco leaf, framed by well-integrated oak and nicely balanced acidity. The tannins have already mellowed to softness but still add structure. An enjoyable medium length. This seemed to be punching well above d'Armaillhac's usual weight and is the epitome of good classic Pauillac at a reasonable price. Great for restaurant drinking because it doesn't need decanting beforehand. Perfect for drinking now. Really enjoyable. (6689 views)

1988 Château Lascombes (France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux) 3/12/2011Goldstone89

Drank from an Imperial at Ian's 60th birthday party. No detailed notes but a super fully mature and welcoming Bordeaux nose followed by a palate that is very plush, velvery and quintessentially Margaux. This definitely beneffitted from the large format and I'd imagine that normal format bottles need drinking sooner rather than later. (3421 views)

2001 Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir Reserve (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago) 3/8/2011Goldstone88

Popped and poured then kept half for the next evening.....needed treating with more respect than I gave it.....it needed the extra day back in the bottle. Consistent with my previous notes that this needs 3-5 more years to fully harmonise and develop tertiary character. (2305 views)

2004 Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Estate (USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains) 3/1/2011Goldstone90

Popped and poured. Dense totally opaque black-red colour with edges of crimson translucency. Nose is immediately earthy, warm and welcoming, intense deep rich ripe blackcurrants, black liquorice stick and fresh but end of season damsons with a mineral, slate-like overtone and totally harmonised oak. Coffee and chocolate emerge with time in the glass then hints of not unpleasant sweaty socks. Palate is initially tart, sharp and slightly acidic red and black fruit that very quickly segues into tertiary flavours of rich creamed espresso coffee, drying tannins that coat the mouth and distinct and pleasant mild old Cuban tobacco leaf on the finish. The deep damson fruit rises to the surface with extended time in the glass and makes it a really pleasurable fully evolved wine that finishes all gorgeously velvety, toffee caramel and coffee-ish. I would drink it up as it is at its apogee. Really enjoyed this over a simple steak dinner at home. (4136 views)
