2000 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey (France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes) 5/30/2011Marc90

Rich, thick and sweet. This is a powerful mature sauternes with a lot of presence in the mouth. Very dark caramel flavours with classic creme caramel notes. The wine had good acid which cuts some of the opulence. (2929 views)

2004 Craggy Range Chardonnay Les Beaux Cailloux (New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay) 5/30/2011Marc92

Exotic, opulent, well aged wine. Butterscotch, dried apricots, meal and rich integrated oak. There is a gorgeous herbal element to the wine that lends definition and interest. Alcohol is noticeable on the layered and long finish. Textbook hazelnut flavours echo on the back palate. This is excellent, individual chardonnay that may be at the end of its plateau of maturity. 1990 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape) 5/23/2011Marc96

Stunning wine. Refined pure and concentrated raspberry and cranberry fruit allied with warm leather, smoke, lanolin, farmyard and mercaptins. Medium bodied with perfect balance and bright acids, this wine has a stern iron ore aspect to its flavour. Spectacular spice aspect to the fruit. The wine is not as opulent as the 1989 but it is equivalent in quality - a more masculine wine to the feminine 89. This wine opens up beautifully. Not a baby, but certainly a candidate for a couple more decades of aging. Exquisite wine in a barnyardy old school manner. This will improve. (11364 views)

2010 Alana Estate Pinot Noir Rapture (New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough) 5/19/2011Marc88

Drunk by J and Jim after tree trimming. Smooth, sweet pure pinot fruit. Lovely toasted oak character. This wine is brilliant value for $$ and is close to outstanding in quality. (2032 views)

2010 Alana Estate Pinot Noir Rapture (New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough) 5/15/2011Marc

Drunk by J when I was on tour. The wine is fully at the level of the Martinborough Te Tera Pinot at at least $10 cheaper at the sale price that we paid. (2056 views)

2008 Craggy Range Syrah Le Sol Gimblett Gravels Vineyard (New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels) 5/2/2011Marc91

Clearly outstanding but very young and primary. This is a wine of balance and texture and not a blockbuster. Velvet texture with acid and tannins that will resolve in time. Very much a new world take on syrah but a multidimensional wine that elevates the experience. Drink in 5 years. (4747 views)
