2004 Castello della Sala (Antinori) Umbria Muffato della Sala (Italy, Umbria) 10/12/2016Goldstone88

Shoe Dinner with Tomasso Malani (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Now a very rich gold colour. The last time I opened a bottle was 4 years ago and this has improved in a rounded, mellow, honeyed and harmonious way but will never get mistaken for a Sauternes but nothing cloying and that takes good winemaking to achieve with this blend. Will keep my last bottle with no worries for at least 5 years. (2133 views)

2002 Quartz Reef Pinot Noir Bendigo Estate (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago Bendigo) 10/12/2016Goldstone93

Shoe Dinner with Tomasso Malani (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): (Magnum No. 083 of 12 bought from the winery in 2005....10 bottles to go). Opened but not decanted for 2 hours before serving.....but a decant wouldn't have hurt.

Dark transparent ruby jewel colour - very bright and young-looking. Lovely perfumed nose of perfumed roses, perfumed hay and more kinds of perfume. Palate is dense but light yet very-multi-layered and still has very full ripe black and red chewy fruit. Heady power on the finish and with a very reverberant finale. This has a fantastic life ahead of it and has 5-8 years at least to improve. Bravo, Rudi! (1170 views)

2001 Quartz Reef Pinot Noir Bendigo Estate (New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago Bendigo) 10/12/2016Goldstone92

Shoe Dinner with Tomasso Malani (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): (Magnum No. 507 sourced directly from the winery in 2005). Lightly transparent red cherry colour still full of brightness. Immediately lovely nose of soft, sweet wild woodland strawberries and with sweet-smelling new leather coming out with time. Palate is lovely acidic freshness that segues very fast into dry autumnal woodland bracken and dried strawberries. Light and feminine mouthfeel. A feminine wine and less resonant/reverberant than the 2002 vintage we drank alongside it. In mangnum format, this has a considerable life still ahead of it, which will take it into uncharted waters of longevity for Central Otago Pinot Noir. Everyone assumed this was a top-flight Burgundy. Great job, Rudi! (1414 views)

1996 Mas de Daumas Gassac (France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Vin de Pays de l'Hérault) 10/12/2016Goldstone92

Shoe Dinner with Tomasso Malani (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Best showing yet of a case I bought in 2009 and had rather written off on previous bottles. Opaque velvet red core that is transparent at the edge. Nose of damp earth and damp bracken with lots of craggy rocks minerality....gypsum? Palate is dusty, dusky, harmonious and very rounded, velvery, dried red fruits and with a huuuge harmonious and rounded reverb inside the head on the finale. It got even more resonant over the following 3-4 hours of the evening. Very mature but so velvety. Frankly, I served this at a dinner to offload some of my remaining bottles but I have now changed my mind. It might wll stay at this level for quite a few years and is a super way of introducing friends to a 'fully mature' French wine when 1996 Bordeaux still require another decade at least. 92+ (4633 views)

2008 Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet (France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet) 10/12/2016Goldstone89

Shoe Dinner with Tomasso Malani (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Surprisingly pronounced strong urine gold colour....looks much older than an 8-year white Burgundy. Nose is marzipan, rich Normandy butter, slightly resinous fresh-sawn white plank wood, strong fresh lemons....needs air and lots of swirling in a big Burgundy glass to harmonise then the rather malo butteriness comes to the fore combined newly-peeled fresh hazelnuts and with some minerality emerging that helps you place it away from Mersault and rather more towards Puligny and beyond. Palate is very citric fresh lemon initial attack that is very salivating and cleanses the entire mouth then segues into a light toffee popcorn and vanilla, oak-driven middle and finish. Heady and surprisingly alcoholic on the finish. Rather rustic for a Chassagne-Montrachet but then it is only a villages. It went very well with a slightly spicy crab/guacomole appetiser and even better with the roast halibut main course....it improves with food. NOTE: Of four bottles....this and one other were pleasant enough but the other two showed over-ageing oxidative notes (e.g. strong marzipan). Drink up immediately and with food. (1495 views)

2010 Castello della Sala (Antinori) Umbria Cervaro della Sala (Italy, Umbria) 10/12/2016Goldstone90

Shoe Dinner with Tomasso Malani (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Light silver-yellow gold colour. Nose of mangosteen and charred lemons. Very rounded and harmonious on the palate with good depth and body...mangosteen again, medium acidity. Quite long, resonant and reverberant. Although I had brought both wines, I mistooke this for the Fontaine Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet we drank alongside it. I am pleased that I have kept my patience with this wine because I found it way too oaky in its youth. I suspect it has more positive development ahead of it. (3398 views)

2011 Domaine Leflaive Mâcon-Verzé (France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Verzé) 10/12/2016Goldstone89

Shoe Dinner with Tomasso Malani (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Have kept my hands off this for 3 years and it has paid dividends. Light yellow gold colour. Nose of fresh banana, white peach and a little bit of oak. Plate is rounded, harmonious and moderately buttery with good white stone fruits, hints of asian custard apple and a good balancing acidity that keeps it fresh. Some slight length. Has really harmonised in the past 3 yeaards and is excellent good-value Macon that shows what a good winemaker can do with a lowly appelation. Bought on release for $18. I'd say this has 2-3 more years to go but wouldn't expect much improvement on today. (1789 views)
