2011 Gargiulo Vineyards Aprile Super Oakville Blend (USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville) 4/21/2020mflesh93

2011 Sangiovese drinking perfectly right now. Bong cherry cola, mint, herb, a little bit of black tea leaf. Medium bodied, fully integrated and ready to go. finish and a slightly chalky tannin character, almost making me wonder how much longer this one will go. My guess is probably about five years? Definitely not anywhere near the back side of the hill. And I also have a magnum of this as well which I will lock up until my 5 year old daughter's college graduation! (1087 views)

Likely corked, unpleasant barnyard characteristics, not what you would expect from GV April. (1422 views)

2011 Gargiulo Vineyards Aprile Super Oakville Blend (USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville) 4/25/2018mflesh

The last time I opened a bottle of this, it was 10/14/16. I'm actually quite surprised that I was able to hold off a year and a half. But, just as I remembered it, just with a little more maturity to it. This wine is in a good spot right now. The wine pours a dark color with a dusty maroon meniscus. The nose was black cherry and graphite, yet still having a sweeter, youthful kind of characteristic to it. The entry is, for sangiovese, full-bodied. I haven't had every Sangio on the planet, but this is the fullest of those that I HAVE tried. There is so much complexity here...Black cherry, oregano, almost seemed "volcanic" in nature. The middle of this wine is deeper, more youthful, yet still structured and composed. The finish of this wine still has some tannin, some acidity, great fruit, some bramble, some spice. Nice. The mag of this is going to be great in 5-7 years. (1455 views)

2011 Gargiulo Vineyards Aprile Super Oakville Blend (USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville) 10/14/2016mflesh

This wine is coming into its element. Tastes like a Brunello with a bit of age on it. Nice cinnamon and herb spice cookie. Good dark rasberry and a hint of pie spice dominated the front. I remember the middle being rather full bodied, more than what I had anticipated. The finish was still holding its own, and was quite abrupt for the first hour. This 2011 sangiovese needed DECANTING, as it took about 3 hours in the bottle before the finish really showed its own (and was quite long. Half elegant, half bramble). This wine will still benefit from 1-2 years of age in the bottle. Done by 2021. (2356 views)

2011 Gargiulo Vineyards Aprile Super Oakville Blend (USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville) 10/28/2014mflesh91

Nice wine -- really good if served pop and pour. Cork withdrawn intact with zero bleed. Medium cherry red stain on the cork. Poured a thin red color with a rather expressive floral nose. On the palate was an acidic, medium bodied wine with black cherry and herbs. The wine was very expressive in the middle...black cherry, a little pie spice sweetness. The finish was quite acidic as well, devoid of tannin. After sitting open for a while, the acidity blew off on the finish. Acidity died in 10 seconds or less, as did the wine on the palate. Wine didn't hold too well overnight into the next night, so I'm not sure what's going on here. Either way I expected WAY more concentration and integration on day 2 that was all not there (didn't even finish it due to THC type of expression I was getting). I don't believe this one will hold nearly as long as the 2010 given that the 2010 didn't do this within the next 24 hours. Structure is OK, but will not age well. (4063 views)

Ok this one was great. Very SOLID fruit for a sangiovese based blend. Tannins were balanced and more time would make it only better. (3246 views)

This is a HUGE sangiovese. BIG fruit and solid tannins. It has 3% cab that makes it kick. Good stuff. (2439 views)

2011 Gargiulo Vineyards Aprile Super Oakville Blend (USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville) 1/26/2014mflesh90

Not drinking as well as the 2010, but I don't expect it to do so at this point. This wine was uncorked and bottle decanted for about an hour before it was tasted. Tasted side by side with a 2010. Poured a little darker than the 2010 did, and had some very nice raspberry and black cherry notes. On the entry the wine is still rather acidic, and kind of muted the berry initially. The acidity did die, and ended up showing a nice fruit and almost floral (lavender, wildflower, lily) bouquet that the 2010 didn't really have. The wine was a little more complex in the middle, involving some earth, allspice, acidity that still remained, and some background sweetness that was present in the 2010 as well. I don't really know if this one is ready to go just yet, but I can see it really being much better than the 2010 at the one year and two year mark. This Aprile will be a monster I believe, and I look forward to giving this one a 94 in a couple of years. Cellar now or drink with LOTS of decanting (you should probably decant a lot more than I did). A nice 10-12 year wine. (1386 views)
