2017 Failla Chardonnay Big Egg Keefer Ranch (USA, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville) 5/16/2023skyequeen25

Yuck - tasted weird in an unpleasant way...took 3 sips over a period of time and now pouring it down the rain. (164 views)

2017 Failla Chardonnay Big Egg Keefer Ranch (USA, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville) 8/9/2021S-F88

I had the Chuy Ranch version of this concrete-finished Chardonnay and was raving about it. The Big Egg editions have always been a must-buy and they don't make much of this stuff, so it's a treat.

But I have to say that perhaps my expectations were for a repeat, but this had some things that rubbed me the wrong way. On the pour, a deep yellow. As if you'd left an urine sample after a long, hot, slightly dehydrated day. Already on the nose is some sort of candied, tropical note that is a premonition of what is to come. First sip, and what I can taste are grilled pineapples. That would have been fine, but what really bothers me, is that it's really sweet as well. Maybe it's because I'm on a no sugar diet at the moment, so I'm extra sensitive, but this came across as overly so to me. And is there anything more annoying than really tropical notes that also then follow through with sweetness? It's like having all your Club Med bar drink fears happen for real. On top of this, is a slightly oxidative note (which would explain the deep color) that doesn't do the wine any favors. Somehow, beneath all this, I can see a great wine, but the hairsprayed superficiality of it all, detracts. It's like a plastic surgery version of a Chardonnay. The Chuy is so much better.
