1975 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Chardonnay (France, Champagne) 9/18/2015Paul S94

Sasi's Birthday Lunch (White Rabbit, Singapore): A beautiful aged Champagne, this is at full maturity and drinking wonderfully well. On first pour, it almost smelt and tasted like a great old Loire, with fragrant nose of honey and kumquats laced with little oxidative, mushroomy notes. With time, browned apples and apricots and a nice minerally scent started coming out as well. Very pleasant. It was the palate that I really liked though. Absolutely mellow, with the mousse dying down to just the lightest suggestion of spritz, and perfectly integrated and balanced, this was a lovely mouthful of juicy apples on attack seasoned with a dash of spice and salty twang of kumquat peel, all undergirded by more of that nice minerality picked up on the nose. Still strong enough to go with a whole variety of food (especially foie gras), this was a great marriage of sweet fruit and nice savoury tones wrapped up in a lovely mature roundness. A full, mouthfilling finish with lightly honeyed tones then brought the wine into a satisfying end. A lovely blend of power and elegance, this was everything one could expect of a good Pol Roger at this age. (2191 views)

1975 Pol Roger Champagne Blanc de Chardonnay (France, Champagne) 11/1/2007psmith

Cork shot off as soon as the cage was removed - good sign for a Champagne of this age. Pure caramel apple notes, nicely resolved mousse and a nice, viscous quality. Some oxidation evident, but overall a very nice wine. (2427 views)
